Ok let's try this once more.
In post 165, quadz08 wrote:I think the reasons people like Best/Funniest Role Claim is because it is a non-serious award.
It is just there for the lolz of it all, most of the time.
We need
more
lolz awards, not less, IMO. Mafia is all srsbsns on this site, and that's fine. I like it that way, for the most part. However, there's no reason we can't celebrate the stuff that isn't that way. Funniest role claim was a superb way to do that. Even if we just do a "Funniest Post in a Mafia Game" award (which is broader than Role Claim) I think it would be good. We need a solid mix of serious "you dun good" awards and chilled-out/not that big of a deal/look back on the funtimes awards.
I think that the community as a whole likes the scummies because they are fun. Not because everyone gets all worked up about wanting to win one, or anything like that, but because they're
fun
. Let's have our awards reflect that.
P-EDIT: Chamber, I think it's not a bad idea to do some awards like that, but not all (naturally).

I agree, but I think that moving towards a rankings/points/achievement system is making it

Very rarely have I seen a truly hilarious moment also be a moment of truly good play. For example, in Fate's Destiny Mafia, Spyrex posted an image in-thread that I think literally every player in the game fell of their chairs laughing at. Would I have nominated it for funniest moment? Absolutely. Good play? Hell no. While the categories are not mutually exclusive, the overlap is so small that it makes no sense to group them together.

I really don't see what's wrong with rewarding a funny post, KK. It's not like people are going to start turning games into platforms for stand-up comedy just so they can win this scummy; I just don't think the two categories should be judged together.
I see the other side, truly I do. I just don't think that on a site of this size that we'll have an issue finding nominees for either category.

I think that the Golden Fedora is only for someone who has been at a level of service that is essentially unimaginable. I can see Flay getting it, maaaaybe. No one else jumps out as deserving of something quite so prestigious.

KISON Y U MAKE ME LAFF SO HARD AT WORK
Anywho, Golden Fedora: Retirement present / lifetime achievement award seems fitting to me. Like, I can think of a couple non-admins who might be considered for one a couple years down the line if they keep going like they have been, so it's not like it will only go to admins (IMO). However, I do think that your typical Golden Fedora person maybe will have been a listmod or something similar at some point, just because the type of person who's going to contribute enough and be respected enough to get a Golden Fedora is going to be the same type of person who volunteers to do important jobs on-site anyway.

1 year from what date? Because if scummies judgements are due on July 30th, and a newbie joins on July 15, they obviously aren't getting best newbie then, but if we wait til next year, they'll be too old, and out of the running.
This is why Rising Star is the best choice logisitically.

I think that's one of the crucial things about mafia; it's not baseball, where you can go all SABERMETRICS and figure out a player's effectiveness based purely on stats and it's pretty much going to be correct. Certain playstyles are effective in certain games with certain other players with certain roles and mechanics and etc. There are simply too many variables, and the game is based too heavily around human interaction to put together any sort of truly meaningful statistics. Hell, even win/loss ratios are unreliable; you could've gotten vigged N1 for being a VI in every town game you play, and still have a 7/2 town record just because the rest of the town was good.
I think judging pretty much has to be subjective; I honestly don't feel that there are any truly meaningful individual statistics in mafia.
In post 199, xRECKONERx wrote:KittyMo actually did the MVP voting thing in this game and it added a lot to the game, in my personal opinion. I may try it with my upcoming mini normal.
Awesome. More data!
AGar and I plan on doing MVP voting at the end of Experimental Role Mafia. I would love to see a) more mods doing it willingly and b) the listmods at least considering making it a mandatory part of running a game. (With the possible exception of the newbie queue.)
There is nothing even remotely resembling that award (or any award that I can feasibly applying to a role claim, for that matter) on that list, unless I have gone blind.
Care to try that again?
EDIT: herpderp have link

To me, Name In Orange is "you aren't/weren't/haven't been an admin/mod but you're AWESOME and deserve recognition," while the Golden Fedora is "you WERE a mod/admin and have been so damn spectacular that you deserve recognition."

I like Reck's Most Enjoyable idea.
Re: mechanic/role scummy- you could take nominations for both and then if the lines blur / there aren't many applications, you can merge them during judging. Just put that in those award descriptions from the beginning and you're good.

I don't like the idea of making games that are only Theme because they have non-mafia flavor ineligible for Best Setup. We could do Best New Open Setup, Best Normal, and Best Theme, and not necessarily give them all out every year?
Or maybe a better idea: Best Non-Theme Setup Design, which includes everything that could be considered normal if it weren't for flavor?

I think it boils down to the fact that given two performances that are close to one another in performance, the one that won is always going to win an award for 'best performance' over the one that lost. Sure, one that lost will be in the discussion, but it seems to me that by the nature of the 'Best [Faction]' award, winning is (or should be?) a pretty big factor in determining a winner.

That means either we're relying on mods to do something that happens after their game is technically over (read: most won't do it) or we need the listmods to be aware of exactly when every game in their queue ends and post that survey in it at that time (which is a lot of work that we currently aren't doing). Also, we'd then have to compile all that information, which is more work in itself.
