I don't think making a thread along the lines of "What Scummies would you like to have?" would've meant nothing gets done.

The steering committee should first ask for input and then set the categories before saying "nothing gets changed until next year".

That's a pointless waste of time. These categories were decided based on input from last cycle. Input from this cycle will shape it next year. And so on. There's no need for a separate time in between.

No, they weren't; there was no discussion regarding Rising Star and Best Role Claim

because nobody knew a change was planned.

It could've gone like that:
SSC: "Hey, we would like to introduce those changes..."
The Plain People of MafiaScum: "Yeah, we like the Rising Star idea, but Best Role Claim should stay."
SSC: "Okay then, we'll implement Rising Star and leave Best Role Claim as it is."

Make the thread with the suggestions in early November, and the final categories are ready by the start of the year.

Except we can't discuss things if we don't know they're planned.

If the SSC plans to, say, condense Paragon and Corleone into one award, it won't come up in discussion and will not be opposed simply because nobody outside the SSC will be thinking of it.

A thread in November is a very good idea - part of the reason it wasn't done was because the SSC had like 2 active members then. That's changed now, at least. Obviously if you think there's an award that should be added/a part we're missing out on that can be brought up too. We had talk of a scummies announcement/suggestion thread or something, too.

The thing is if 50% of the people want it and 50% don't what do we do? Should we have a threshold for how many people want an award before it should be considered/added?

I think the reasons people like Best/Funniest Role Claim is because it is a non-serious award.

It is just there for the lolz of it all, most of the time.

lolz awards, not less, IMO. Mafia is all srsbsns on this site, and that's fine. I like it that way, for the most part. However, there's no reason we can't celebrate the stuff that isn't that way. Funniest role claim was a superb way to do that. Even if we just do a "Funniest Post in a Mafia Game" award (which is broader than Role Claim) I think it would be good. We need a solid mix of serious "you dun good" awards and chilled-out/not that big of a deal/look back on the funtimes awards.

Hi, you're still kinda new here. Stuff gets changed all the time, Scummies included (check the original list versus the 2011 list). We have this entire forum for changes and ideas, called Site Ideas, not to mention the focused discussions that happen from time to time. If you want to discuss something, have at it, but trust me, this site EXCELS at discussing. Nobody should need a formal invitation.

We have this entire forum for changes and ideas, called Site Ideas, not to mention the focused discussions that happen from time to time. Nobody knew Best Role Claim was going to be abolished. There was no public announcement or discussion. Therefore, nobody said anything in favor or against it.

You don't make a thread "Hey, I kinda liked the Scummies categories last year, so don't change them!" if you don't know what kind of changes are planned.

Yeah. And I'm making the point this should've been done before the categories were fixed, or semi-fixed. While it's too late for 2012 unless the SSC decides to open up the categories, it should definitely be done in 2013.

mith picks the SSC to make those calls based on their own discussion with each other. While site feedback is certainly important and factored into discussion, the entire process would be bogged down if the SSC waited to get public pulse on absolutely every decision. That's why there is a committee of people who all take an active interest in the Scummies.

And Faraday makes a good point: up until about a month ago, there were only two real active people on the SSC: SpyreX & Faraday. Now, about 4-5 more people have been added and there's a lot of activity. The Scummies suggestions thread has already been discussed.
