Newbie 688

Moderator: vollkan

Alive (1/9):

Battle Mage,
Mafia Goon
, survives. Mafia wins!

Dead (5/9):

WeatheredClown,
Cop
, was lynched Day 1.
mrfixij,
Vanilla Townie
, was killed Night 1.
orangepenguin,
Vanilla Townie
, was lynched Day 2.
springlullaby,
Vanilla Townie
, was killed Night 3.
Aldusskel,
Mafia Roleblocker
, was lynched Day 4.
CF Riot,
Vanilla Townie
, was lynched Day 5.
Moses le fou,
Doctor
, was killed in Endgame

springlullaby,
Vanilla Townie
, was killed in Endgame

Set-up

This Newbie game is "semi-open" and will be using the F11 set-up. This game could be any one of the following:

1 Mafia Roleblocker, 1 Mafia Goon, 7 Vanilla Townies
1 Mafia Roleblocker, 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Cop, 1 Doctor, 5 Vanilla Townies
2 Mafia Goons, 1 Cop, 6 Vanilla Townies
2 Mafia Goons, 1 Doctor, 6 VanillaTownies

If either of the first two set-ups are being used and the situation occurs where the Mafia Goon is lynched first, the Mafia Roleblocker will still be able to submit both night kills and roleblocks.

Role PMs:

Here are all possible role PMs
Town
I wrote: You are a
Vanilla Townie
. You have no special abilities, other than the powers to discuss and vote. You win with the town, when all mafia are eliminated.
I wrote: You are a
Cop
. Each night you may PM me the name of one player and you will find out if they are town or mafia. You win with the town, when all mafia are eliminated.
I wrote:You are a
Doctor
. Each night you may PM the name of one player. That player will be protected from any kill attempts by the mafia. You win with the town, when all mafia are eliminated.
Mafia
I wrote:You are a
Mafia Roleblocker
, along with your partner <insert name here>, who is a Mafia Goon. Each night you can kill one person and roleblock a person. Roleblocking will prevent a person from using any night action. During the day, you must try and avoid being lynched.

You may talk with your partner at Night, and send me a choice via PM of who you would like to kill/roleblock (your team can do both so long as you live). You win when all the town are dead, or when nothing can prevent this eventuality.

Note: You may talk with your partner privately during confirmations (from the point of receiving this PM until the start of D1) to plan strategy, but no night actions will take place until Night One.
I wrote:You are a
Mafia Goon

You may talk with your partner at Night, and send me a choice via PM of who you would like to kill/roleblock . You win when all the town are dead, or when nothing can prevent this eventuality.

Rules:

1: This is a game. Having fun is a requirement.
2: Please bold your votes. For example, Vote: RandomPerson. Votes that are not bolded will not be counted.
3: If you wish to change your vote, bold an unvote for the player you were voting and vote for the new player you are going to be voting. For example,
Unvote, Vote: ScummyPerson
. If you do not unvote in this format, your vote will not be counted.
4: Lynching will require a majority of the votes. You may
Vote: No Lynch
to decide to not lynch someone on a given day. No-lynching also requires a majority of the votes. Once a lynch is decided, the decision is final. Feel free to continue posting until the thread is locked, but unvoting before I check the thread will not prevent the player from being lynched.
5: If you get lynched or killed, you are dead. Post nothing; not even a “Bah!” post.
6: Any questions, concerns, desires for me to prod, whatever PM me.
7: Never quote anything that I PM to you.
7A: In relation to discussing ongoing games, adhere to the following guidelines:
a) Only refer to ongoing games which you are dead in
b) Even if you are dead, do not discuss the actions of other players in that game, or your own actions if doing so could potentially impact upon the other game (eg.It would be acceptable to say "In game X I was town and I did the same thing as I did here", but it would not be acceptable to say "Player P in the other game was stupid for thinking what I did was scummy, since he ignored post 123")
c) If in doubt, PM me and I will be happy to tell you whether or not a reference is acceptable.
8: Treat this game as a commitment and be considerate of me and your fellow players.
9: No small or invisible text, editing of your posts, etc.
10: Do not discuss this game outside the thread at any time, except if your role specifically allows you to do so.
11: You must confirm in thread.
12: If you do not post for 3 days (72hours) without notifying me that you will be away, you will be prodded. Not posting within 48 hours of the prod or getting prodded more than 3 times may result in replacement (subject to my own discretion).
13: If discussion lags, I reserve the right to exercise my discretion to impose a deadline.
14: If a majority is not reached by a deadline, the person with the highest number of votes will be lynched. In the case of a tie, the first person to reach that number of votes will be lynched.
15:
Red
is my colour. Don't use it.
16: If you see something you don't understand, ASK! Newbie games are here for people to learn and understand; either I or one of the other players will respond to your question. If it has to do with your role, feel free to PM me directly.

Hey everybody. Just to keep you updated, WeatheredClown has approx 12 hours to confirm. If he fails, I will seek a replacement. Hopefully, that won't take too long. Sorry for this unusual delay.

Hi all. I didn't realise that this was not in the rules, but let me just make a few points about discussing ongoing games. Some mods ban it outright; I am a bit more flexible. I don't mind if an ongoing game is referenced, but adhere to the following guidelines:
1) Only refer to ongoing games which you are dead in
2) Even if you are dead, do not discuss the actions of other players in that game, or your own actions if doing so could potentially impact upon the other game (eg.It would be acceptable to say "In game X I was town and I did the same thing as I did here", but it would not be acceptable to say "Player P in the other game was stupid for thinking what I did was scummy, since he ignored post 123")
3) If in doubt, PM me and I will be happy to tell you whether or not a reference is acceptable.

I'm going to add this policy to the rules at the start, to avoid future confusion

I have a vote-count at the top of each page, by editing a votecount in at the bottom of the the top-most post in red text . If need be, you can request one at any time, however.

Edit:  Just by coincidence that was the last post of page three, so here is the votecount for page 4.

I'm happy to include a "history", but I don't understand the description of the format you have given.

In your next post, could you just include a hypothetical example of such a votecount, or something - because I am not sure what you mean exactly.

Stretching how far back? As in, were it anything other than the immediately preceding unvote, I imagine the bracketed names would come to take up a lot of space

The day is drawing to a close when, just before night fell, you settle on the lynch of WeatheredClown. WeatheredClown is taken to a nearby tree and strung up. As his shaking and writhing draws to a close, and his life is ended, a badge falls out of his pocket. It reads "Police Department".

Everybody gathered the next morning, determined to sniff out the scum and avenge the loss of WeatheredClown...everybody, that is, except for mrfixij . Worried, the group rushed over the mrfixij's house, finding him lying dead in his bedroom. A note on his bedside table read: "Give up now town; it will hurt less in the long run." mrfixij was simply an ordinary townie.

mrfixij ,
Vanilla Townie
, was killed Night 1.

======
It is now Day 2. At this point in time, there is no deadline.

With 7 alive, it's 4 to lynch.

Oops, I forgot to unlock the thread. Sorry about that

Everybody gathered the next morning, fearing the worst. To the astonishment of most of those present, nobody had died over the evening. The town knew, however, that the mafia must still be active and, so, they sat down once more to hunt down the scum.

======
It is now Day 3. At this point in time, there is no deadline.

With 6 alive, it's 4 to lynch.

Thus, the town decided to go home for the evening without lynching anybody - but would their pacifism be in vain?

Nobody was lynched Day 3

There once was a girl named SL,
The scum wanted to send her to hell,
As she lay in her bed,
She was shot in the head,
And by morning she gave off a smell.

springlullaby,
Vanilla Townie
, was killed Night 3.

======
It is now Day 4. At this point in time, there is no deadline.

With 5 alive, it's 3 to lynch.

I resent that. Don't tell me 'smell' is the only rhyme you could come up with.

From my grave, I swear, you will pay.

Do I detect the foul stench of rule-breaking?

Moses has been prodded

CF wrote: I think Vollkan copied the entire post that the last votecount was on and added that to my post when he put the new votecount up there. That freaked me out too. The first sentence is mine, everything after that got copied.

 I do my votecounts by:
1) Going to the post containing the previous vote-count and pressing the "Edit" button (which shows up for a mod)
2) Copying the votecount text
3) Editing the post at the top of the next page and posting in the votecount

Obviously, I accidentally copied all of the post. I will delete the copied material now.

Since my last limerick went down so well:

There was a roleblocker Aldusskel,
He murdered at night with his best pal,
But by the end of Day four,
His days were no more.
(But unlike SL he did not smell) :P

Alduskkel,
Mafia Roleblocker
, was lynched Day 4.

The town of four darkened by night,
Three went to bed trembling in fright,
But when morning had come,
The town was struck dumb,
Four people still stood in the light.

 Way to spoil the whole dramatic flavour and conclusion effect Al and Mastin >_>

CF_Riot,
Vanilla Townie
, was lynched Day 5.

FINAL ROLE REVEALS:

Moses le Fou,
Doctor
, was killed in endgame

springlullaby,
Townie
, was killed in endgame

Battle Mage,
Mafia Goon
, went on to a victorious romp around his new town

MAFIA WINS!!!

NIGHT CHOICES

NIGHT ONE

Moses le Fou: Protect Aldusskel
Aldusskel: Roleblock springlullaby
Mafia: Kill mrfixij

NIGHT TWO

Moses le Fou: Protect mrfixij
Aldusskel: Roleblock Nobody
Mafia: Kill Nobody
{The "Nobody" actions were sent in; it is not simply that the mafia did not submit actions}

NIGHT THREE

Moses le fou: Protect CF_Riot
Aldusskel: Roleblock Moses le Fou
Mafia: Kill springlullaby
{Obviously, this refers to the first incarnation of springlullaby}

NIGHT FOUR

Moses le fou: Protect springlullaby
Mafia: Kill Nobody
{Again, a conscious choice to No Kill}

One question I have for anybody who can be bothered answering:
What did you think of my replacement policy, specifically my repeated use of in-game replacements?

FWIW my theoretical justification for replacing in this manner is as follows:
I think that having any player lurk to the point of replacement places their side at an unfair disadvantage - because a new replacement invariably lacks the depth of knowledge of their predecessor. Sometimes a new replacement, a fresh set of eyes, can be a good thing, but in the mainstay I find that replacements don't tend to bring new fresh perspectives and, instead, have a rocky start and it's hard for them to get as "switched-on" to the game as continuing players. Thus, whenever possible, I try to replace from within a game

Al wrote: vollkan, what are your thoughts on the game overall? On individual players?

I enjoyed reading this game, and I thought the standard was good overall. I tend not to read my modded games very in-depth, though, so I can't really give individual feedback.
Mastin wrote: Still shows four alive. That intentional?
Nope. Fixed.
BM wrote: Also thanks to Vollkan for modding the game. I would like to note that i really dislike the practice of letting people replace back into roles, from a player perspective, and especially when scum, because sometimes you work damn hard to get a certain guy out of the game, and then he comes back. Really screws with things. Bringing Mrfixjj back was a real cow, but luckily he didnt really play to his full potential second time around.
This reminds me - just in case any of the newer players were not aware, the practice of letting people replace back in is quite controversial (as BM's post above no doubt demonstrates). Basically, don't take my moderator policies as indicative of any consensus on this issue (in fact, I am quite sure that I am in a minority here).

To address your point directly BM:
I've been in the same position as you were (killing someone (MoS if I recall correctly) because of their aptitude as a player, only to have the mod bring them back in). I know it can be a pain in the ass for scum, but it's equally true that having somebody leave the game, replaced by a new player, is often very damaging to town.
