Cool so it's consistent around 8 or 9 guesses I think. 7 that tell you everything you need to know, and then there's only a few combos out from there. I am curious if mastermind can consistently get 5, but this would be a very fast time wise solve at least.

I suppose you could get really lucky in the early guesses (the best I think can reasonably happen is 2 2 corrects and a 1 correct), in which case you can probably get it down to 6 guesses with some luck.

So to confirm, your first three guesses are always 11100, 22233, 44455, then your next 1 guess is 77766, and your final 3 guesses are all the same number, 2 of which appear to deal with two of the numbers you've already tested and then the other one based on whether 77766 results you anything or not and if not then one of the two remainders and then it's just a matter of slotting after?

The way I picutre it is.

Phase 1: Basic Probing
Phase 2: Clarifying
Phase 3: Guessing

Phase 1 you just guess combinations of two numbers like XXXYY that are each different than each other until you've identified 4 number slots and you've covered 8/10 numbers.
Phase 2 you guess 3/4 XXXXXs that gave you numbers in the first phase. This will tell you 4 numbers and whether they are in the first 3 or last 3 slots.
Phase 3 you just use the restriction of clicks and the positions to put together a number that fulfils all the information, of which there should only be a handful.

You guys are troopers, thanks for testing these strategies out.  I think this strategy that is consistent in the 8 or 9 guess range is going to be the best bet, barring some test runs of Sam's strategy.  Mastermind might be capable of producing faster solves with some early guess luck but not with that kind of reliability, and we already know we win the digit sum tiebreaker.

Good. I'm mostly freeish tomorrow to help test strategies, of course I do believe I tend to wake late compared to the rest of you.

I wouldn't mind trying against a number you have, but if you have to go to bed that's totally fine!

2: 1 correct, 1 in correct spot
3: 0 correct

I could just follow the plan, or since this is practice I could try something a little unorthodox.
