Peter is reminding me of geometric proofs in high school, this kind of rules.

assuming from peter's strings: 36xxx are correct:

nothing is possible

assuming from peter's strings that x65xx are correct:

26599, 26559, 96529 all possible

from peter's strings, assuming xx58x is correct:

nothing is possible

from peter's strings, assuming xxx85 is correct:

nothing is possible

assuming 3x5xx is possible

nothing is possible

assuming 3xx8x

nothing is possible

assuming 3xxx5

nothing is possible

assuming x6x8x

nothing is possible

assuming x6xx5

nothing is possible

assuming xx5x5

nothing is possible

possible strings from a brute-force:
26599
96529

this is all assuming peter's strings are correct. i'm about to doublecheck the shifts on these, and ensure both strings are valid.

y'all, do we wanna guess one of the two brute-forced ones and see if we get five digits correct?

Yea, I just went through and bruteforced all the combinations that fit, and got left with two strings that match.

if peter and I are both correct, we just win within 5 guesses at worst.

I don't want to guess those yet, but would be down to guess those soon. No need to rush. I could have made a mistake somewhere.

Yea, you finish yours and see if you end up with the same strings. If you get the same strings, I can brute-force them again and see where we end up.
Based on the previous one though, it has to be 65

This is what I've narrowed it down to right now. Just need to count the shifts from the additional number added and that'd give the last digit. I'm going to take a bit of a break in case anyone wants to try these.

1. 36xxx accounts for a change of 7.

367xx two additional. (9 total)

3670x -
3671x
3672x
3674x
367x0
367x1
367x2
367x3

36xx9 one additional. (8 total)

360x9
361x9
363x9
364x9
36x09
36x19
36x29
36x49

3. 3xx8x accounts for a change of 5.

3xx89 one additional (6 total)

30x89
32x89
33x89
34x89
3x089
3x189
3x389
3x489

5. x65xx accounts for a change of 7.

x65x9 one additional (8 total)

165x9
265x9
365x9
465x9
x6509
x6519
x6529
x6549

6. x6x8x accounts for a change of 4.

Already did this one.

Total possibilities:
96383
36783
26782
16585
26685
36385
36585
46485

7. x6xx5 accounts for a change of 6.

x67x5 two additional (8 total)

167x5
267x5
367x5
467x5
x6705
x6715
x6725
x6745

8. xx58x accounts for a change of 5.

xx589 one additional (6 total)

1x589
2x589
3x589
4x589
x0589
x2589
x3589
x4589

10. xxx85 accounts for a change of 4.

xx785 two additional (6 total)

1x785
2x785
3x785
4x785
x0785
x2785
x3785
x4785

I don't actually know how you're counting the shifts, but I can try to brute-force the combinations if you want once you get them.

Here, if you want to brute force the combos. I've worked out the first one as an example:

1. 36xxx accounts for a change of 7.

367xx two additional. (9 total)

3670x - three additional (9+3 = 12) need a shift of 3 more for the last digit. In the shuffled string (79978) 3 away from 8 is either 1 or 5. So this can only be 36701 or 36705.
3671x - four additional
3672x - five additional
3674x - three additional
367x0 - two additional
367x1 - three additional
367x2 - four additional
367x3 - five additional

36xx9 one additional. (8 total)

360x9 - one additional
361x9 - two additional
363x9 - four addditional
364x9 - five additional
36x09 - three additional
36x19 - four additional
36x29 - five additional
36x49 - three additional
3-10
3. 3xx8x accounts for a change of 5.

3xx89 one additional (6 total)

30x89 - one additional
32x89 - three additional
33x89 - four additional
34x89 - five additional
3x089 - one additional
3x189 - two additional
3x389 - four additional
3x489 - five additional

5. x65xx accounts for a change of 7.

x65x9 one additional (8 total)

165x9 - four additional
265x9 - five additional
365x9 - four additional
465x9 - three additional
x6509 - three additional
x6519 - four additional
x6529 - five additional
x6549 - three additional

6. x6x8x accounts for a change of 4.

Already did this one.

Total possibilities:
96383
36783
26782
16585
26685
36385
36585
46485

7. x6xx5 accounts for a change of 6.

x67x5 two additional (8 total)

167x5 - four additional
267x5 - five additional
367x5 - four additional
467x5 - three additional
x6705 - three additional
x6715 - four additional
x6725 - five additional
x6745 - three additional

8. xx58x accounts for a change of 5.

xx589 one additional (6 total)

1x589 - four additional
2x589 - five additional
3x589 - four additional
4x589 - three additional
x0589 - one additional
x2589 - three additional
x3589 - four additional
x4589 - five additional

10. xxx85 accounts for a change of 4.

xx785 two additional (6 total)

1x785  - four additional
2x785 - five additional
3x785 - four additional
4x785 - three additional
x0785 - one additional
x2785 - three additional
x3785 - four additional
x4785 - five additional

I don't really understand it, (re - math not being my strong suit), but I can certainly try. It just seems like simple addition, so I should be fine.

Group 1 is impossible. Even if a digit repeats, we still have a number from 0-4, that we know cannot be right.

Group 2 only has 36339 as a possible string, following information we know already.

Group three is most likely impossible, however 33x89 could be possible, but wouldn't be due to shift I think. There's six shifts on this string, with more shifts left over.

Actually I don't know if the shift is impossible, but the math is hurting my brain currently so I'm stopping

If you mean the moves, you're right. There's no way any given number could move 7 times.

upon further thought - group two is fully impossible.

Nothing in group six is possible either.
The only one that looks possible is 26782, but that has 678 when we know that's impossible.
