Title: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread
Post by: Foxy Fox on September 07, 2021, 08:39:09 am
Ok, so, five people can do it. That's all I've read from it.

This seems like a challenge for people who'd be good at math, and can guarantee they'll be around at 7:30 EDT tomorrow.

I'm going to say right here and right now, I would like to sit this challenge out.

This is a two-folded reason:
1) I will be with friends tomorrow at 7:30 EDT, and will be mobile posting, so I can't really do very well in the challenge.
2) I'm horrible at math. I was an English major in college. On the ACT, I scored like a 22 on the math section, (out of 36), and like a 35 on the English section.

I also unfortunately cannot guarantee being available at that specific time tomorrow. If I am one of the people taking part, I will do my absolute best to be, but there's also a chance that I just wouldn't be there :/

Ok, so the main brunt of points would be quoting onto multiples of three. I think the important thing we could do, is find all multiples of three that could occur on pages 10, 15, and 20.

0-24 - page 1
25-49
50-74
75-99
100-124 - page 5
125-149
150-174
175-199
200-224 - page 10
225-249
250-274
275-299
300-324 - page 15
325-349
350-374
375-399
400-424 - page 20

currently trying to help console a close friend, so if someone wants to find the multiples of three on pages 10/15/20, I'd appreciate it.
I'm pretty sure there are the post ranges for each page, but if someone can double-check it, and ensure that this is correct since i asked mods about it, that'd be appreciated.

'+3 points for being the first to quote onto the same thread page for each live round post that is a multiple of three.
-3 points for any post that quotes onto the same thread page for each live round post that is not a multiple of three.'

I'm trying to decipher what this means but I'm drawing a blank

Someone posts ‘3’ on one of the pages that count. First person to empty quote that gets 3 points for the tribe, as long as it’s still on that page.

Someone posts ‘4’ on one of the pages that count. If someone quote tweets that on that page, they lose 3 points for the tribe.

OH, that makes more sense instead of it being "you must quote it on a multiple of three"

I should almost definitely be around at that time. I'll let you all know if that changes, but I'd like to play!

So, do we try to calculate *all* the multiples of 3 from 0 to 100,000, or just get a fair number of them and have the people in this tribe know what they are?

Like, really high multiples and just remember them?

So the forum says it only lets you post once every 10 seconds. I've just tested it a bit in my confessional, and found that it's closer to 11 seconds in practice.

If we were to ignore things like stealing the other team's points or trying to trick them into losing points, the fastest way we could score points on our own is by going in a cycle between the five of us. So something like this:

00:00 Player A: 3x
00:02 Player B: (quotes Player A)
00:04 Player C: 3x
00:06 Player D: (quotes Player C)
00:08 Player E: 3x
00:11 Player A: (quotes Player E)
00:13 Player B: 3x
etc. etc.

But that's probably not possible to pull off due to how long it takes to quote a post

We could try something like this

00:00 Player A: 3x
00:02 Player B: 3x
00:05 Player C: (quotes Player A)
00:07 Player D: (quotes Player B)
00:11 Player A: 3x
00:13 Player B: 3x
etc. etc.

and then have Player E there to make plays, like stealing stuff or trying to trick the other team?

Just spitballing ideas

A useful trick for quickly knowing multiples of 3: if all the digits add up to be a multiple of 3, then the number itself is a multiple of 3. If anyone can add up single-digits quickly, that will be very useful here.

With that in mind, I don't think we'd gain much from finding all of the multiples of 3. Does anyone who wants to compete think having a bank of numbers would help them?

I would like to request to sit this out for the following reasons:
1) I don't understand the challenge at all
2) I'm really bad at math
3) I work until 6:15pm CST (which is basically 15 minutes before the challenge starts) and I'm going to be hellishly busy at work this week

I love challenges and I never ask to sit them out, but I'm making an exception for this one.

I'm available at go time tomorrow, but I'm having a hell of a time wrapping my head around how this works. Could somebody who gets it break it down for a five year old?

I'm also predisposed at that time tomorrow, but I'll try to help out in whatever way I can throughout the day tomorrow.

I'm reading through everything more closely now. I like your idea of having specific times that our designated 'posters' are going to post and having a 'quoter' designated to each 'poster', and that way the quoters are going to know what time to anticipate the post and quickly quote. I actually like the Player E idea too.
I can't actually think of a better way to go about it? I think keeping our strategy as simple as possible works, because the big risk here is probably overthinking it and just confusing ourselves.

Also I will literally be doing a work shift while this challenge is happening and I'm scared that I might not be able to get away at the right time. :(

I also like the idea of taking turns and keeping it simple that way. Just executing that simple strategy very well could win it.

Should we designate a certain range of numbers to use before hand? Or just kinda do whatever in the moment

The more chance we can take out of this, the less likely it is that I'll mess things up. I can get behind taking turns as long as I know what my role is. Being a quote person would probably help.

We should assign an order than, I don't mind going first or being person "A" rather

The challenge says "two allowable posts".. Does that mean we can just increment by 3 until we reach near a new page and then all quote?

The challenge says "two allowable posts".. Does that mean we can just increment by 3 until we reach near a new page and then all quote?
The allowed type of posts are numbers and quoting. What you describe is ALLOWED; however, to earn points the multiple of 3 will have to be posted on page 10 and then also quoted on page 10, or posted on page 15 and also quoted on page 15, etc. Quoting a multiple of three from a previous page is a neutral move (+0), just like quoting a multiple of 3 that someone already quoted.

To clarify, only the first post or quote of a multiple of 3 will award points, and only if it's on one of the pages for that round? You can't post 9 on page 9 and then post 9 on page 10 and have that be awarded points?

I want to cry right now.  Thank you so much for everyone who stepped up for this challenge.  Today has been so busy and I don't feel well on top of it.

You can repeat the same number all you want. You could do the whole challenge solely using the number 3. As long as your are the first to quote a particular post from page 10 onto page 10, etc, you will earn points.

I'm on phone now, will be at a computer when challenge starts

A helpful way of thinking about the challenge might be this: our goal is to quote more scoring posts than the other tribe on pages 10, 15, and 20. There are 36 points up for grabs on each page. So we need to aim for 18 or more on each page to try and beat the other tribe.
Dont know if that helps! Just in terms of what we have to aim for etc

The 1 extra point we get for getting pagetop on page 10 is more valuable than it looks too I think. It's essentially a tiebreaker. Maybe when we're approaching Page 10,we can slow down a bit, and then all post together as soon as we see that there are 4-5 posts left before Page 10?
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread

I like that idea
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread
Post by: Buckley on September 08, 2021, 08:13:02 am
it could also give us some breather time to get ready for that first page where scoring matters.

So we have:

Buckley
Klaus
Me
Peter
Max?

competing

right?

so what i'm hearing is 1-half of 9. just post 3 to get to page 10.

at half of 9, slow down, maybe post 4 as a warning, and then all go at once? then just quote whoever got it on 10? How do we make sure we don't get sniped? do we have an order of who tries to quote first, second so we don't end up sniping each other?
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread

I could be a person who quotes to score points? I feel like I'd be alright at that
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread

we could post really high numbers that are multiples of three

and we could assign people to give fake ones if we think they're going to the offensive to snipe us.
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread

We might want to pair up, and then have the odd one out be a sort of 'all-rounder'/there to catch anything they see basically.
Margot you said you were good to be a person who posts numbers? We could pair up if you wanted

we could quote 4 and page 10 and still get points. the post numbers matter for the +3 and -3

if we trick them into quoting a multiple of 4 or something it matters

I just want to be here to post 3 back to back and not quote anything. i will not have the reaction speed for that

it's more-so to make them second guess it's a multiple of 3

numbers dont matter

Yep, I'm here. I think with my lag I should post numbers. Are we going with the high ones, and how will we coordinate fakes?

Points will be earned or lost as follows:
+1 point for landing the first blow ("Here's your belt"). The first post containing a number on page 10 will earn the poster's tribe 1 point.
+3 points for being the first to quote onto the same thread page for each live round post that is a multiple of three.
-3 points for any post that quotes onto the same thread page for each live round post that is not a multiple of three.

This was clarified by the mods to be incorrect; what matters is the numbers that are posted and whether they are multiples of 3. Your post number in the thread doesn't matter
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread
Post by: Margot Tenenbaum on September 08, 2021, 08:28:37 am
I should have good enough latency to be a quoter
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread
Post by: Peter Whitman on September 08, 2021, 08:28:57 am
so +1 for any number

+3 for posting on the thread for a live round with the post number being a multiple of three right
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread
Post by: Buckley on September 08, 2021, 08:29:17 am
So

if you post '3' and someone quotes you, they get 3 points
if you post '4' and someone quotes you, they lose 3 points

post number in the thread itself doesn't matter
Title: Re: Challenge 3 Discussion Thread
Post by: Margot Tenenbaum on September 08, 2021, 08:29:39 am
so +1 for any number

+3 for posting on the thread for a live round with the post number being a multiple of three right
first post and first empty quote

oh ok didnt see that, so I'll just post numbers.

10,333 is NOT. a multiple of 3 so I'm doing that baby.

we'll see how things go

We won 3/3 page tops

and 2/3 quotes.

they also quoted something that wasn't a multiple of 3 so that point was moot.

I think we have a really good chance
