Repeating digits would make it easier.

spin 1st dial 3 units upward - 7
spin 2nd dial 3 units upward - 6
spin 3rd dial 2 units downward - 9
spin 4th dial 3 units downward - 7
spin 5th dial 4 units downward - 4

we have a repeating digit with the 7s, we have one digit in common with the 4, and it's a relatively high number for the tiebreak

i like the logic of guessing 56789 and with this that only nets them 2 correct digits and forces them to waste a guess to find the repeating digit.

oh wait they will be given that code and are trying to guess 43218. nvm is repeating digits helpful in that case? i guess it doesn't give them a good starting string to guess

Guessing the starting string seems like a bait since it’s guaranteed to not have any correct numbers in correct places

Oh I thought we were just scrambling the lock combo ie 12345 and the other tribe would get 54321, 43215, etc etc

sounds good, i'd love to be heavily involved in solving this and will be around when the 2nd part of the challenge drops. Can we discuss how we want to go about this? Should we wait for a lot of confirmation from the tribe and do others want to make sure their there to the point where we set up a predetermined time to work on it?

Maybe establish a quorum, like if three people think the guess is a good idea we can go ahead and guess it. The three is completely arbitrary though, I don't know how many people we can expect to have online at any given time. If we set a time to work on it I'll certainly do my best to show up.

is there any objection to wasting two guesses at the start on 01234 and 56789?

I think getting it straight away is unlikely so I’d be happy with maximising information early.

Eager to hear other people’s thoughts though.

Yea, going for 01234 and 56789 tells us instantly two things:
1) How many numbers fall between 0-4, and 5-9
2) If there are any duplicate numbers.

If we know that, we can start to reverse-engineer the results back.
If we get hits on any of them, I think we just play around with that. The important thing is, we need to figure out like three of the numbers so we know how many rotations are left for the remainder of them.

I think we can spend a fair bit of tonight discussing it, and try to reverse engineer some of the numbers as well.

@mods - this is the combination we're going with, in case you need someone to explicitly state it. The shuffled combination is 76974
