Challenge 3 Discussion Thread

Ok, so, five people can do it. That's all I've read from it.

This seems like a challenge for people who'd be good at math, and can guarantee they'll be around at 7:30 EDT tomorrow.

I'm going to say right here and right now, I would like to sit this challenge out.

This is a two-folded reason:
1) I will be with friends tomorrow at 7:30 EDT, and will be mobile posting, so I can't really do very well in the challenge.
2) I'm horrible at math. I was an English major in college. On the ACT, I scored like a 22 on the math section, (out of 36), and like a 35 on the English section.

I also unfortunately cannot guarantee being available at that specific time tomorrow. If I am one of the people taking part, I will do my absolute best to be, but there's also a chance that I just wouldn't be there :/

Ok, so the main brunt of points would be quoting onto multiples of three. I think the important thing we could do, is find all multiples of three that could occur on pages 10, 15, and 20.

0-24 - page 1
25-49
50-74
75-99
100-124 - page 5
125-149
150-174
175-199
200-224 - page 10
225-249
250-274
275-299
300-324 - page 15
325-349
350-374
375-399
400-424 - page 20

currently trying to help console a close friend, so if someone wants to find the multiples of three on pages 10/15/20, I'd appreciate it.
I'm pretty sure there are the post ranges for each page, but if someone can double-check it, and ensure that this is correct since i asked mods about it, that'd be appreciated.

'+3 points for being the first to quote onto the same thread page for each live round post that is a multiple of three.
-3 points for any post that quotes onto the same thread page for each live round post that is not a multiple of three.'

I'm trying to decipher what this means but I'm drawing a blank

Someone posts ‘3’ on one of the pages that count. First person to empty quote that gets 3 points for the tribe, as long as it’s still on that page.

Someone posts ‘4’ on one of the pages that count. If someone quote tweets that on that page, they lose 3 points for the tribe.

OH, that makes more sense instead of it being "you must quote it on a multiple of three"

So, do we try to calculate *all* the multiples of 3 from 0 to 100,000, or just get a fair number of them and have the people in this tribe know what they are?

So the forum says it only lets you post once every 10 seconds. I've just tested it a bit in my confessional, and found that it's closer to 11 seconds in practice.

If we were to ignore things like stealing the other team's points or trying to trick them into losing points, the fastest way we could score points on our own is by going in a cycle between the five of us. So something like this:

00:00 Player A: 3x
00:02 Player B: (quotes Player A)
00:04 Player C: 3x
00:06 Player D: (quotes Player C)
00:08 Player E: 3x
00:11 Player A: (quotes Player E)
00:13 Player B: 3x
etc. etc.

But that's probably not possible to pull off due to how long it takes to quote a post

We could try something like this

00:00 Player A: 3x
00:02 Player B: 3x
00:05 Player C: (quotes Player A)
00:07 Player D: (quotes Player B)
00:11 Player A: 3x
00:13 Player B: 3x
etc. etc.

and then have Player E there to make plays, like stealing stuff or trying to trick the other team?

Just spitballing ideas

A useful trick for quickly knowing multiples of 3: if all the digits add up to be a multiple of 3, then the number itself is a multiple of 3. If anyone can add up single-digits quickly, that will be very useful here.

With that in mind, I don't think we'd gain much from finding all of the multiples of 3. Does anyone who wants to compete think having a bank of numbers would help them?

I would like to request to sit this out for the following reasons:
1) I don't understand the challenge at all
2) I'm really bad at math
3) I work until 6:15pm CST (which is basically 15 minutes before the challenge starts) and I'm going to be hellishly busy at work this week

I love challenges and I never ask to sit them out, but I'm making an exception for this one.

I'm available at go time tomorrow, but I'm having a hell of a time wrapping my head around how this works. Could somebody who gets it break it down for a five year old?

I'm reading through everything more closely now. I like your idea of having specific times that our designated 'posters' are going to post and having a 'quoter' designated to each 'poster', and that way the quoters are going to know what time to anticipate the post and quickly quote. I actually like the Player E idea too.
I can't actually think of a better way to go about it? I think keeping our strategy as simple as possible works, because the big risk here is probably overthinking it and just confusing ourselves.

Also I will literally be doing a work shift while this challenge is happening and I'm scared that I might not be able to get away at the right time. :(

I also like the idea of taking turns and keeping it simple that way. Just executing that simple strategy very well could win it.

Should we designate a certain range of numbers to use before hand? Or just kinda do whatever in the moment

The more chance we can take out of this, the less likely it is that I'll mess things up. I can get behind taking turns as long as I know what my role is. Being a quote person would probably help.
