Mini 607 - Cop Central [GAME OVER!]

Cop Central

Things were going well in the city of Ottawa. People were happy, and the city was a really great place to be in. Then the hockey playoffs came around, and everything took a turn for the worse. The local team was absolutely terrible, and many former supporters turned to vandalizing municipal property as a way to vent their frustrations. Much worse, though, was that many of these people managed to escape justice. Yes, the police force was doing a very poor job of apprehending anyone. Soon, whispers began that there was corruption on the force.

The mayor was left with no choice. He took the 12 Cops that were most suspected of being corrupt, and locked them in City Hall, telling them that they would be released only when all of the guilty were no longer a threat. He instructed you to descend the ladder of civility, requesting you resort to lynching each other by forming some sort of voting system. His last words to the bunch of you were: "You should expect to see a dead body every morning. I expect to see one every night."

SF's Rules (stolen and edited from PJ)

Rules On what is Allowable:

[01] This is only a game, and I expect all players to remain somewhat civil. I will not tolerate excessive abuse upon freedom of speech: obscenity, profanity, libel, and fighting words will not be tolerated, and if you push it, the Moderator reserves the right to have you replaced. In other words, be respectful to all players, as well as myself.
[02] Do not talk outside of this thread, unless your role PM explicitly says you may do so, and even then, you are restricted to night-time for all out-of-thread conversation.
[03] Do not edit or delete your posts in any way, shape, or form. Once you have posted something, it is there for good, unless I find reason to alter or delete your post myself.
[04] Do not quote your role PMs in any way, shape, or form. This is also true for night conversations. You may, however, paraphrase your PM at any time, but if you go too far, the Moderator reserves the right to either replace you or to modkill you should the situation warrant.
[05] Do not post in invisible text, excessively small text, or use [ color = black ] tags.
[06] You may request mod-prods, replacements, clarifications, and vote counts from me directly in the thread, but please precede such with a bolded
Mod: So-and-so
, so that I will be able to answer you as promptly as possible.
[07] Once I have officially posted that you are dead, then you are dead. Do not post any relevant information to the game whatsoever. You are, however, allowed a typical “Bah!” post of some sort.
[08] You may talk during twilight about anything you wish.
[09] Do not question my decisions in-thread: if you have a problem with me, take it to Private Messages. You may, of course, post problems you see with my votecounts, but that’s about as far as I’ll allow things.
[10] You are allowed to have fun, and in fact, I heartily encourage it! This is a game! Play hard, play fair, and enjoy yourself.

Technical Rules

[01] Each day the town must decide on a lynch. Once a majority has been reached on a player, that player will be lynched, regardless of any subsequent unvoting.
[02] To vote for somebody, please use bold tags. For example,
Vote: MM
.
[03] If you wish to unvote, I would appreciate a formal bold
Unvote
, although this will not be required.
[04] The Day will begin with a set deadline. This may be extended, if discussion is particularily good, or due to extenuating circumstances.
[05] When a deadline has been placed, the majority required for lynch still remains the same before the deadline is reached. However, if the deadline is reached and there is no majority, the player with the most votes will be lynched.
[06] If two or more players are tied for the most votes when a deadline hits, the player who reached that number of votes first shall be lynched.
[07] Nights will last a maximum of 3 real-time days. If you have not sent me a night-choice by that time (should you have one), I will randomize your choice.
[08] If you feel that you may not be able to post in-thread for a period of 48 hours or longer, please say so in-thread and send me a PM as warning. If I find it necessary, I will have you replaced, but I would much rather keep all players who sign up for any of my games.
[9] Any and all of these rules are subject to change at my discretion.

Set-up

This game will be run using the Dethy^2 set-up.

8 Players will receive the following PM:
Mod wrote:You are a
Cop
. You might be Sane, Insane, Paranoid, or Naive. Every night, send me a target, and I will tell you what alignment you perceive them to be.

You win if the Scum are dead.
1 Player will receive the following PM:
Mod wrote:You use to be a Cop. Now, you are a
Retired Cop
. Someone will die before your decision progress gets anywhere, so you're willing to fill in for that role. You will have to use their equipment, though, so you will be getting the same results they would have gotten.

You win if the Scum are dead.
3 Players will receive the following PM:
Mod wrote:You are
Scum
(XXX, YYY, ZZZ). You are trying to blend in as a Cop. Every night, you will agree on someone to Kill, and send their name to me. You must Kill every night.

You win if Scum are all that remain, or nothing can prevent the same.

(Sorry I'm late getting this up, I was out of Town for the last 24+ hours)

You all retreat to your various rooms for the Night, equipped folders on everyone in the building. Most of you spend the Night going over the folder of one particular person, trying to get at their possible motives. Three of you don't know the first thing about going through folders, though, so those three just spend the Night on the phone. Then they Kill someone.

By morning, you are all in the largest room. Well, all of you other than Jenter. He's dead.

Jenter Brolincani, Cop, Killed Night 1

With 11 alive, it will be
6 to lynch!

Oh, one more thing. All results were sent as the following:
SensFan wrote:You investigated:
XXXX

They appear:

That is certainly correct.
Since everyone is either Cop or Scum..
Do we mass claim our investigation results?

But if we are mistaken with our results (I don't think the game specified if we were 100% correct. It said that you could be paranoid or insane or sane) couldn't that lead to more confusion?

Here's the wiki entry on cops, it explains all of the permutations we have in this game if you don't know them:
https://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Cops

We should not massclaim on Day 1, in my opinion.

Only 4 of the 8 cops (sane, and insane) will have useful investigations for us, but only once they figure out which ones they are. Mass claims at this point would only give more information to the scum than to town about which ones of us to kill. And at this point none of us will even know enough for our N0 investigations to mean anything to us anyways.

The way I see it, right now, the most anyone can know about their own status is that they are NOT 1 of the 4 possible cop variants. That is, unless your N0 investigation was Jenter, in which case you might be able to narrow it down even more.

So we should just start scum-hunting.

I forgot to mention this, but there is a
3-week deadline
for Day 1. This can be moved closer is discussion is lagging, or extended if discussion is good.

We absolutely should mass claim
our results
.
It forces scum to fake claim a result, which can catch them in a lie later on.

There will be, automatically, 7 results that are "real" and 3 that are fake, and the retired cop who will not have a result. IF more than one person claims not to have a result, one of them is scum.

Before we all claim our results, we should claim who we inspected.
I inspected Aimless.

Again, there's no way to know anyone's sanity, but all cops should be able to narrow their own alignment down to 3 today. (All real cops can eliminate the possibility of them being one of either Naive or Paranoid with their result).

The real question should be if someone should be lynched today or not.

Drool89 has my attention, for not seeming to know much about how this game works.

Fark also has my attention for knowing how the game works and still wanting to not mass claim.

There can only be two of each kind of role. All of us putting all of the information we have out to public use helps us all narrow down the possibilities.

ANd this is the most important thing:
The sane cop who doesn't reveal his result and gets nightkilled can never reveal his result. Plus, when a scum has been targetted he will not know if it is by naive or insane cops if there's an innocent, or sane or paranoid cops if there's a guilty.

So let's all claim our targets, then claim results.

I'm down with that. How do you suppose we choose the order to claim then? Just who ever pops in or some fundamental plan behind it all?

Dice? the popcorn method? Going down the player list?

No Lynch is not an option in this game. At deadline, the person with the most votes will be lynched. Ties will be broken by chance.

Whoa there, skruffs.

You bring up some good points that I didn't consider, but I'm still not convinced. We should all discuss and decide as a group whether we want to mass claim. Until then, I won't be saying who I investigated or what my result was.

I don't think we should go off half cocked before we have a chance to discuss it. Most people haven't even checked in yet.

Now I've only played in a newbie game on MS, so maybe there's some angles that I'm not seeing. In that game, mass claiming was not a good idea.

Even if we don't mass claim, we can still find scum the old fashioned way, and we can still mass claim later on in the game, possibly to better effect.

Actually, this is a good point.

If the majority of players think the mass-claim is a good idea, I'll go along with it.

Of course we should mass claim. The more information the town has, the better off we are, and if we know everyone's results, we can begin a process of elimination to find scum.

Suggesting anything else is rather scummy; I agree completely with Skruffs regarding drool and Fark.

I'm pretty sure SensFan is not going to reveal what kind of cop was killed (see how he didn't reveal Jenter's) so Skruff's point about the Sane Cop is useless because we won't know if a sane cop died or not.
The point is, we can figure out a cop's sanity by looking at his targets, and cross-checking as people die: we may not get sanity information after death, but we still get alignment.

However, if our hypothetical sane cop doesn't post his results, the only person who will know if he's sane or not is said hypothetical cop. If he then dies, we've lost a boat load of valuable information.

And, lastly, there are three scum, and two of each kind of cop. For any given result on any given player, the statistics for inferring the veracity of said result are simple.

For instance, Cop A gets a scum result on player B. There are twelve players (initially), and thus eleven investigation targets, three of which are genuinely scum. A paranoid cop gets a scum result 100% of the time; an insane cop gets a scum result 8/11's of the time, and a sane cop gets a scum result 3/11's of the time. Thus, a night one scum result tells you there is a 50% chance you're paranoid, 36% chance you are insane, and a 14% chance you are sane. The odds are identical for Naive / Sane / Insane regarding a town result.

Working the other direction, we can hopefully put odds on the alignment of a given player, although this is harder since fake results from scum will gum up the works.
