As someone that lives in Japan and is separated from other English speakers of board games, I have very few board gaming options (as my Japanese is not so good that I can explain the mechanics of board games too well - I could understand explanations to an extent). I've played Settlers of Catan once in Japanese (was also my first game of it).

Also played in person werewolf once in Japanese, moderated two games and played in one. The games only happened because a guy was going to host two different events and a total of like... 2 people showed up for each event and then a former student of his came to visit. Virtually zero interest.

League board game and most other board games have zero place in my life. As far as my functionality goes, they're dead until I get the funds to visit you people in the states or something.

Well, yes and no, right? I don't have IRL friends. Board games are dead for me. No online matchmaking for settlers of catan, ya know?
Don't bother engaging.

It fills a niche. For my money I don't think it will appeal to anyone who doesn't like League, and there is no crossover between my league friends and my board game friends. I will not be spending $US75 on the board game. Though, the minis look like they're worth $75. That said though, Pandemic is $50 or whatever, and the actual "minis" are worth fuck all, you're paying for the quality of the game, not the quality of the cubes in that particular game.

Board games, particularly new board games, are probably as popular now as they've ever been if not more so. $75 is a high price point, but for the game provided doesn't seem unreasonable.

Games designed on some source material are dicey, but there are great examples out there. For example, Battlestar Gallactica is arguably the best game of its genre I've played.

i mean I get that there are people who can't play board games(panzer, ray)

but to say that board games as a genre is dead is... wrong

there are a lot of reasons to buy/not to buy a league board game, and "board games are dead" is not one of them

EDIT: though I guess "for me, board games are not relevant to my life" would definitely be one

I feel like board game groups are one of the most popular things on meetup. now whether you like board games enough to play with strangers is another question, but it's usually available (maybe not for ray given he's in japan)

You play for 4 hours at least, with a board that has too many pieces, too many rules, too many things to take care of, to then win or lose based on what cards get shuffled on top and what the dice roll.

I find you need really awesome people to keep playing that game..

I think it has a social element that makes it more than RNG and obvious optimal play.

The relevance of the social element depends on how many expansions are being used probably.

B2 Zyra hype.
EVEN BETTER! Someone stole my zyra in my last promo game, so I picked Soraka and schooled them.

I hate when I get my pick stolen or banned in promos.

A vast majority of my friends play board games, D&D, and the like. Unless you think you'll have no friends with which to play, that shouldn't even be an issue.
Oh I know they're not dead, I'm an avid bgamer myself. I just wasn't sure what demographic
this
LoL thread belongs to, being the LoL thread and all (same goes for the bgame thread which I was reluctant to necro...is that strict around here?) so I chose my words carefully and described both sides of the pond, to gain further insight on what anyone would think of it.
In post 1596, mykonian wrote:re: boardgame. Themed games like that are often made because the creator knows there's a market. Usually these games are not the greatest, and some of the things I've seen here make me similarly worried. Now there are exceptions to this, there is the odd game that manages to strike the balance between being thematic and not detract from gameplay by doing so, but I can't think of one right now that hasn't been made by a producer of boardgames.
Battlestar Galactica as mentioned. Also, Firefly. And I think that's it.

And that's why I wondered about LoL. If it's from a popular franchise, I'm being cautious as well. All I know of it is that it's not a MOBA game, which would have been pretty sweet. There's only like 2-3 MOBA Boardgames I know and they all kind of lack in the game design department. I mean, Rum and Bones can be cool but its too swingy and RNG reliant to work.

But Japan is full of awesome microgames. I was in Akihibara a couple of months ago and I saw alot of nice ones. Now, I don't get much Japanese either, but that's what BGG is for. Some of the games have fanmade english translations and if they don't the shopkeepers are really friendly in that aspect. Most of the games I've seen aren't language dependent either so there's that. I wish I could've stayed longer to study some of them, but I was only there for 2 days to buy the japanese version of Lost Legacy.

Speaking of werewolf, I saw this really neat 8-bit version at Yellow Submarine once. Damn thing fit in the palm of your hand and I would've wanted it had I not really that many friends to play it with.

Can't wait to see him cause massive jungler rage when he steals camps as a support.

Quinns was extensively involved in the development, so much so that they discuss how he changed the entire direction of what they were doing. That's like... in terms of advice, that's like getting advice for playing Support from Mata. We're talking an expert on board games, and apparently he changed the entire direction - full co-operative, modular boards, campaigns, mechanical tweaks. So... yeah, the game is going to work for hobby gamers, I'd bet money on it.

Why would you even bother trying to do that kind of thing in the first place? This isn't Ranked 5v5.
