As far as I understand it, you can still allocate points towards your defense - you Add to your def with this power. Or maybe I'm wrong and you are indeed quite dead.

Do I just choose a monster like Egg Clutch?

Allocate Energy to attacks, defense, and any Mutations you may have. Attacks, as well as some Mutations, must have a target specified. Targets can be any player or sidekick. You may have multiple attacks of varying strengths so long as you have enough Energy.

A sample set of orders:

Psionic Blast: Burn 5 - CoolBot
Rampage: 10

A total of 68 Energy is spent, with an additional 5 burnt.
