What a nasty little town this has become. Mafia have arrived and are systematically gunning down the nice townfolk. What should decent, smart people do?

One of the following four set-ups is used for this game:

a) 2 mafia, 1 cop, 1 doc, 3 townies
b) 2 mafia, 1 cop, 4 townies
c) 2 mafia, 1 doc, 4 townies
d) 2 mafia, 5 townies

Note: in view of the number of players, we will start in the day phase, although most larger games start with a night. The mafia will be allowed to communicate pre-game, though no role will submit choices until Day 1 is over.

Possible roles:

You are the mafia

. You may only talk with each other during the game's "night," not during the "day." You let me know before the night's deadline who will be your victim. You win the game when all the other players are dead.

You are the cop

. Every "night" before the deadline you send me a message with a name of your choice, and I will let you know whether that player is mafia or not. You are not allowed to communicate with any of the other players outside the thread. You win the game when the mafia are dead.

You are the doctor

. Every "night" before the deadline you send me a message with a name of your choice, and that player cannot die if attacked by the mafia that night. You cannot heal yourself. You are not allowed to communicate with any of the other players outside the thread. You win the game when the mafia are dead.

You are a townie

. You are not allowed to communicate with any of the other players outside the thread. You win the game when the mafia are dead.

Hello all. This is my second game. In my first one IC was incommunicative and the other was scum, so I still have a lot of learning to do. So far the first post in both games (other than the mod) has been a vote for me… hmm…

Anyhow, I will get started off with a

Bad vibes here. First you say that you've never played in a game

this small

before, and go on to explain the danger of voting with only 4 votes required to lynch. That implies a level of experience with the game.
Then you post a "what do we do?" as though you are trying to play the total newb card.
I wouldnt call it lying, but I would say that you look as though you are trying to generate an impression in your second post that is refuted by your first post.

Oh, sorry. I have played in 2 or 3 larger games (about 20 people or so) so I'm not a total newb, but one of the reasons I signed up to play a newbie game was to learn the ropes of mafia which I'm still not sure about. I do know as much however that a lynch requiring only 4 votes can be pretty quick so we better watch ourselves. Anyways, I still never know what to do on Day 1's since we have little to no leads.

You make a reasonable point, but the purpose of my post was both as a joke (as you have identified) and to pre-empt anybody who would be inclined to say that placing a second vote is scummy - it is not bad for the town if the two scum out themselves on Day One, no matter which role gets quicklynched in the process.

People often ask the purpose of random voting. I used to wonder this myself too, but then I realised that while random votes get very few reactions that are of any use, arbitrary mini-wagons do, which both helps to get discussion started and help us to begin finding scum.

So while my post was, admittedly, overly-facetious, it was intended to show the fallacy in the argument that placing a quick second vote is a scumtell, should anyone decide to go down that route.

Indeed, if my death led to the identification of the 2 scum, that wouldn't bother me, as I win if the town wins. But since you went ahead and pointed this fact out, it's actually now much less likely that any scum would pile on and reveal themselves. In fact, your post might actually be a subtle warning to other scum (particularly if they are new) to not pile on for this very reason.

I think I'm comfortable where my vote is right now.
