Wiki Group

I've been meaning to start this for a while, but I'm easily distracted.

The wiki is editable by anyone, and that's fine for the most part. However, some pages, such as those containing Queue rules, contain site policy that I would like to keep static for the most part, only changing them when a rule changes, and for these it would be best if there were only a small group with editing access. In addition, I think it would be very useful to have a group who frequently go through the wiki to keep the pages up to "standard", both for ease of use (especially for Newbies) and to satisfy my OC tendencies.

We are likely going to be switching to new wiki software soon, and so it seems an ideal time to get such a group together, particularly is there will be quite a bit of work involved in moving pages over. So, if you are interested in being part of such a group, please post here to let me know.

A grasp of English grammar and spelling is required.

I can be your grammar nazi.. However the moving pages part would require instructions on my part.

Things starting to get back to normal, so next week sometime I'll hopefully have something more to say on this.

In the meantime, any suggestions for the wiki directory/subdomain?

Possibilities include:

/wiki (Pros: Obvious what you're going to, short, simple. Cons: This is where the old wiki stores its files, so there would be some minor inconvenience in moving things over.)
/mafiawiki (Pros: Also obvious, and gives it a clearer name if linked elsewhere: MafiaWiki rather than mafiascum.net's wiki. Cons: Not so concise, and mafiawiki.mafiascum.net is a bit... odd.)
/guide (Pros: A bit more interesting. Cons: Not quite so obvious that it's a wiki.)

Other suggestions welcome.

wiki.mafiascum.net has some serious appeal, but failing that /wiki should work fine. Since the old wiki is a flat-file, it should be able to be temporarily moved to /mafiawiki for migration. (That would also avoid JEEP having to recode the tags..)

That's a trivial change. wiki.mafiascum.net is my preference, but /wiki is my second choice. It shouldn't be too difficult to move things around.

Yeah, whatever the directory it's trivial to add it as a subdomain. Either will work. I'll get going on this soon, now that I have INTERNET AT HOME again.

Need to get back to work on this. Been incredibly busy this past week though. (And by "incredibly busy this past week" I of course mean "procrastinating like mad for six days and then trying to do everything I should've been doing the previous six days on the seventh".)

Okay, I'm pretty sure it's not out of line for me to take the reins of this thread.

For those who haven't noticed yet, http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/ contains the new version, which utilizes the same MediaWiki software as Wikipedia. It should be much more flexible and powerful than the old wiki. I've been copying pages over informally, but if anyone else wants to help, here's how:
  • The two big pages to compare are on the old wiki and on the new one. All redlinks (okay, not "Comments from...") on the new one should to be filled in before JEEP can flip the code. I've started with relatively "static" pages such as definitions and theory pages, leaving user pages until last.
  • Logging in to the new wiki (which is optional, currently) is a process of signing up under some username you pick (can be the same as your MafiaScum login 98% of the time), not a universal password. We can grant some additional people the ability to delete and move pages if necessary.
  • There's some old discussion about how to implement the new wiki (from about when this thread was formed) at http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php ... Wiki_Group if you want to read up on that.
  • "Clusters" with the code word at the top are replaced by Categories on Media Wiki. I've set up a bunch of the basic ones, visible at http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php ... Categories - some of the redlinks are red on purpose while we figure out exactly what to call "Category:Mafia win results in games", for example. I've moved a few of the grouping pages, like Informational Roles, to categories as well. The long text there can be removed once the pages are populated.
  • Another good way to find pages/redirects that need to be written are at http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php ... antedpages - but most of that will resolve itself as we transfer pages from the old wiki to the new.
  • Most of the wiki syntax remains the same; you may find newlines not always taking effect when you expect them to, and external links (like to the forum) look different, but overall it should be pretty straightforward. Slap a
    {{cleanup}}
template on the page if you can't figure it out and someone with more MediaWiki skillz will come by eventually I'm sure. :D
  • I'm trying to remove all remaining instances of CamelCase as I go, but I'm sure some will linger on... redirects from the old CamelCase versions don't harm anything and will let old tags work retroactively.
  • Image/file uploads are disabled for now, sorry.
  • Any questions about "Can we do this in MediaWiki?" let me know; I'm not all-knowing but I've recently become an Administrator on Wikipedia and know how to borrow code with the best of them. :P
Anybody still reading by this point...?

I'm willing to do the English spelling/grammar part. I have prior experience with working on manga proofreading. I'm clueless about anything else. Let me know what I can do.
