Does anyone here enjoy smartphone or tablet gaming? If so I HEARTILY recommend Device Six.

It's a crazy atmospheric puzzle novel(?)

Two of those games(Civ 5 and Banished) don't have a story at all per se, and Watch Dogs's story wasn't compelling enough finish the game or to stop me from playing the minigames.

I'd suggest Sleeping Dogs, Thomas Was Alone, and Papers, Please.

to be fair Papers, Please doesn't have a "story" as much as "atmosphere/environment" and a few small plots with recurring characters, which is to say it's really good, but not in the way bv was asking. I dunno.

I've played through Papers, Please already, as well as a bunch of the recommended ones from up there. Only ones I haven't played are Watch_Dogs and Civ V. Planning to wait for Beyond Earth to play a Civ game, and Watch_dogs doesn't really grab my attention. Maybe there just isn't a game out right now that fits what I want to play.

Hmm. Well, Steam is kind of lacking in the story department as far as long games go. There are plenty of indie games that are only a couple hours long with a good story though.

Could you delve into this a bit more? I'm by no means saying it's a
bad
game, I just watched a playthrough of the first bit and it looks fun but ultimately pretty standard. What's novel other than the shovel?

Also my friend gifted me Antichamber for my birthday! How exciting! But I still have like Hotline: Miami and the first Ace Attorney to beat, and I haven't even started Pokemon X. :/ At least there are actually several games I'm interested in.

yeah sure.

I said good, rather than any other adjective, for a reason. Shovel Knight was a game where the designers knew exactly what they wanted and executed it. I really appreciate how tightly focused the gameplay is. The items were great because each one wasn't totally necessary, but allowed you to customize the feel of the game to your specific style of play. Using a combination of items and armor you can get vastly different gameplay, which I really appreciate. Each of the stages is designed very differently around a central theme, so I really appreciated the amount of specialization I was able to get on my character from the items. Simply put, the game just FELT great to play. I don't get that a lot, especially with indie games.

I really liked the art, character, and level design. Along the lines of the designers knowing what they wanted, it really felt like they had a definite plan before they started. None of the areas of the game felt tacked on or lacking inspiration.

It's an extremely well-designed platformer that clearly was made by people who understand game design.

Just... play the game. It's fun.

Don't waste your time on Thomas Was Alone. It was mindnumbingly pretentious and boring. The puzzles are also stupid easy and don't really develop any difficulty over time.

Thanks UT! I think I told myself not to watch anymore of the playthrough because I was "bored" but subconsciously, yeah, I think I might give it a go sometime down the road.

well yeah!

I think a very enjoyable experience is watch The Walking Dead playthroughs, due not just to the variability in actual choices but in reactions to what's being presented.

I loved Thomas Was Alone. It may have been a bit pretentious, but I found it fascinating, with a really interesting story and fun gameplay.

thomas was alone has puzzles that are intentionally repetitive, yeah, but honestly I don't mind. the point is that the actions you do have to simulate an AI functionality and the repeated tasks hammer in that point. it's a nice game but rather short even if you go for 100% completion, I wouldn't recommend it at full price honestly but on sale definitely.
