The better question is "How does scum get the ring" given:

Gollum started with the ring.

Gollum was unkillable while he had the ring.

Gollum could steal the ring from anyone who hammered him, thereby rendering him functionally unlynchable.

Town had no NK or steal, either.

Because if NK'd I'd lose the ring, and wouldn't know (in early game) who to search to get it back.
