Current Newbie Statistics

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Jul 17, 2005 7:40 pm

I went through the past 50 newbie games and here are my statistics.

---

The past 25, roughly all C9 (random selection of Doc + Cop or Only Cop or Only Doc or No Power Roles at all).

Town won 36% of the time. (9/25)

---

In the 25 games before that (all roughly having 2 mafia, 1 cop and 1 doc).

Town won 60% of the time (15/25)

---

My Conclusion: The random C9 gaming is putting newbies at a disadvantage.

Eh...not necesarrily. It's putting the town at a disadvantedge. Now if you wanted to argue that a newbie has a better chance of being town than mafia, I guess that's true. But then I'd say it's silly to appease the town just to give any newbies who happen to be town (which at least 2 are guarenteed)

The thing is, the games are both about playing and learning. C9 forces the mafia to be daring and forces the town to have keener logic and perception. The regular setup forces the mafia to always play it safe and the cops to always come out day one, get protected, and narrow the field. Newbies watching the expert players coax the cop out of hiding will not learn anything...except how to beat the newbie game.

Although you are right. The C9 does give unfair advanteges to the mafia that they may not necesarrily deserve. But give it time, and I'm sure someone will break it.

I still think the best way to repair the original set-up was to forbid "no lynch" as a vote.

I didn't see a lot of "no-lynch" (in fact I can't recall a single instance of it...but my memory is worth jack at 2:30 in the morning), but then again, I wouldn't know how prevelent it was.

FWIW, I scanned the stats back to 75 and saw 2 instances of no lynch, one where the town lost and one where they won. Not exactly a good sample. Anyway, as I've said before, cop claim Day 1 with random lynches is almost as bad.

I thought the reason why the set-upwas broke, was
[1]cop comes out day 1
[2]town goes no lynch all the time in order not to hit the doc
[3]mafia tries to kill doc (random, if everyone votes no lynch)

But thus an advantage to mafia townies, so what's the biggie? The game doesn't have to be 50/50 to be fun.

And DP, I think even with the cop coming out, and the town lynching at semi-random, it still pretty much takes the fun out of the game. I would have suspected that you of all people would have loved an additional mechanic to stop role-claiming from being so powerful...

Stop trying to promote your role/motive split, cam. It won't work ;).
This is just here so my posts don't look so ugly when I edit them.

The hell it won't, he's already convinced me... Wait'll you see my Cruise Ship game...

Anyway, as I recall the town had a similar ratio of wins in the first couple dozen newbie games. It'll take some time for them to work out how best to utilize the new setup to their advantage (hint: the mafia doesn't know if there's a doc, either), but the game's much less reductionist now. If I wasn't in 4 other places, I'd play another.
Retired as of October 2014.

Mr. Flay: Agreed. I think I've already found the breaking strategy, but I'd have to test it in a few newbies before deciding if it works or not.

Unfortunately, it is breaking for the scum, and can break down on occasion. It's not fantastic yet - I need to iron out some wrinkles.
