(11:05:35 PM) jhawk01b: my bold prediction for the year is that whoever wins the NFC West will have a winning record
jdodge1019: hasjghsalghsakljghs is from vermont
jdodge1019: vermont is made of liberal freaks and cows
jdodge1019: he's not a liberal
jdodge1019: thus he is a cow
tbh I really, really doubt the Saheeli Rai/Felidar Guardian combo will actually take off; it might do well occasionally in some metas, but it's way too easy to just hold up mana for Shock if you're in red and hold up mana (as well an Evolving Wilds or something else that can leave the battlefield for free) for Fatal Push if you're in black. it's a really good combo if your opponent can't play around it; if your opponent
can
play around it, it's just... nothing.
I feel similarly about the Wandering Fumarole/Crackdown Construct interaction; it, again, dies really easily (though not quite as easily), and an arbitrarily large blocker has some allure (just in case you run into an Electrostatic Pummeler???) but it's absolutely useless against Emrakul, which is the biggest reason you'd potentially want a huge blocker. it'll be
okay
. but even if it's a cool combo, it's not a game-winning combo most of the time.
The Crackdown Construct combo is sketchy because Construct is a little too unplayable by itself, but the Saheeli/Felidar combo is legit and I can almost assure you some sort of jeskai deck will be playable with it. Whether it supercedes WU Flash, gets slotted into the control shell, or something else happens is beyond me, but this is the type of combo that is good enough and incidental enough that it not seeing play would be stranger than otherwise.
We have decent answers in any case with Dampening Pulse and Authority of the Consuls.

While you’re casting your free spell, the Expertise spell is still on the stack. It will be put into its owner’s graveyard after the free spell is cast. The free spell can’t target the Expertise card in your graveyard. It can target the Expertise spell on the stack, but the Expertise spell will become an illegal target before the free spell resolves.
For the spells in the set that allow you to cast cards for free (i.e. ___'s Expertise), the 'free spell' half resolves before the Expertise card hits the 'yard. You can't Archaeomancer/Mnemonic Wall for free off of the Expertise spell, to get the same Expertise spell back. Well, immediately, anyway.
Also of note, the first part of the Expertise card resolves (e.g. Act of Treason for the red one), then you cast the 'free spell' from your hand,
then
triggered abilities that triggered if the first part of the Expertise spell had any targets. But if said target becomes illegal (e.g. in response, sac my creature) you don't get the free spell at all. (source)
Btw... you can use one of these Expertise cards to cast both halves of a Fuse card (Beck/Call, Breaking/Entering) for free, yeah?
If you don't know how to lie, then how do you know when you're being lied to?
No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.
I think so. That's how Brain in a Jar works- it checks to see if either half of the Fuse card meets the requirement, and then you can cast the whole thing, including Fuse, for free if it does.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.
I have a really wide range. But also I did play quite a bit of twin in modern and I've played quite a bit of control, which this deck is, just with an "oops I win" combo attached.
Baral was meh in my testing. The problem is the number of counters in this deck isn't super high. The discount is nice, but you don't really need it that much and he doesn't really help you in implementing any of your main gameplans.
