BSG is fantastic. We have a crew that plays it semi-regularly on VASSAL.

I definitely would love to have a go. I'd prefer sci-fi over medieval setting any day.

COMPLETELY FORGOT that I backed Vault Wars awhile ago, and it only has a few days left till it's Kickstarted!

It's designed by the guy who did Dead of Winter. It's a bidding/bluffing game based sort of on the television show Pawn Stars or Storage Wars or any of those things... each player drafts a set of "vaults" that will be put up for auction one by one, and each vault has different properties. (IE: There are six items in the vault, but you only get to see one of them... or there are only three items in the vault, but you get to see all three... or, there are a ton of items in the vault, and the top two bidders get to draft them). You either pick up gems which are worth victory points, gear/weapons which are worth gold so you can bid on more stuff(or VP bonuses), or artifacts which give you buffs and bonuses to your gameplay. It's fast-paced, fun, and quick (under an hour). As one of the reviewers said, it's a game with hidden information, but isn't a deduction game... it's a game that encourages bluffing and deception, yet isn't about lying... it weaves all of these mechanics together in a psychologically engaging way to provide a wholly unique experience.

Anyway, check it out, if you want, and back it.

There is a copy of Dead of Winter in my game store, unfortunately at the moment its the only thing in there apart from the usual suspects and their expansions (Munchkin does not need another expansion) and random things I'd be iffy about buying without looking into it first. Tokaido has become elusive, he gets the odd copy in, but I keep missing it. :(

So I recall seeing a kickstarter for a board game that used code words that were dropped in conversations to allow people to find their team mates

Does this ring a bell to anyone? I'm looking for more big group social games and the concept seems cool.

I don't recognise it but, if you find it, I must have it.

I don't know this game but as fair as big social games

For 8 or less I recommend Spyfall.
For 7-12 I'd recommend Telestrations against humanity.
For more than that I got nothing. 2 rooms and a boom works, but its a real game not just a social game.

What you're describing sounds very similar to
Spyfall
. Even if it's not the game you're thinking of (I don't think Spyfall had a Kickstarter), it fits into the category you're looking for, and is worth checking out.

It was a mafia like game. People had roles and stuff.

Meh. I'll make my own version, it's all good.

I'm excited to try alchemists this thursday. It was on my shortlist for next game I'm buying (which won't be for a while) and then somebody bought it - looks like an interesting Euro game (like) with some deduction (love)

Hey

This isn't exactly a Board Game but

I tested this out last night:

Choose two captains. Each captain writes a codeword on pieces of paper. Pieces of paper are distributed evenly amongst the rest of the players.

Players have 3 minutes to talk amongst themselves and try to figure out who is on their team by dropping hints referencing their codeword. Captains can walk around and talk as well.

Once time is up, everyone writes down who they believe is on their team (minus captains). Everyone closes their eyes and captain one says his codeword and anyone with that word raises their hand and that team is written down. Repeat for other team.

Captains choose a player from the opposite team. Whichever team has a more accurate list wins.

If odd amount of players, one player recieves a blank piece of paper. He wins if he ends up on one of the lists read at the end.

Ended up being really fun.

sounds like a lot of fun.
for the odd player rule I get that he wins "with" the winning team if he ends up on a list
I would add a rule that He wins "solo" if he winds up on both lists.

Sounds a little bit like spyfall, a recent game I was introduced to.

It's a lot like spyfall, but it's good because sometimes we have too many players for mafia and don't feel like playing 2rooms, so it's another nice game to play with a big group.

And the blank piece of paper does not stop the teams from winning, he's like a survivor, he wins regardless of which team wins. But I mean you could homebrew your own rules.

Edit: The words were "cup" and "yellow" and people started saying "you want some lemonade?" confusing the shit out of both teams ahahaha

Too many for mafia? impossible.
My problem is not enough for mafia or noone ever wants to play it, so we stick to resistance and the occasional 2 rooms.

(or usually other games but for the large social deduction game fix its Restistance > One Night Wereworlf > Spyfall > 2 rooms > almost anything > Mafia ) :(

Very glad to see a giant thread about board gaming here. I'm a pretty big fan. Generally play board games every Friday and I work with some people (e.g. CooLDoG) on designing our own every Sunday. Most recent game I've tried out that I've been a huge fan of is Space Cadets: Dice Duel. Very good real time co-op. I'm usually not a big fan of dice in games (Catan :/), but the real time franticness makes the dice play work.

Haven't played Spyfall yet, but I printed out the PnP a few weeks ago. Just need to get to cutting the cards out. I saw that some of you guys are playing Spyfall online here, and it seems like a game that works fairly well in a text-format. Might join a game sometime after finals are over.

Another option is http://spyfall.meteor.com/ on everyone's smartphones. I did the print and play too, but that app just works better if its an option.
Dice duel is another game that I own, that not a lot of people like playing.
