Tracking the votes

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri May 13, 2005 7:42 pm

Greetings!

How do you people keep track of votes?

I use following system in Excel:
Copy+paste list of players to the leftmost column.
Designate an abbreviation to each player, two or three letters.
When player votes, place the abbreviation of the voted in the next free box in that player's row and put the number of the post in front of the abbreviation.
When player unvotes, put the number of the post behind the abbreviation.

Example:
olio[col]OL[col]10CB13[col]13ISInternet Straighter[col]IS[col]1OL[col] Capitan Blink[col]CB[col]2OL5[col]8IS

OL votes CB in post 10 and unvotes in post 13 where he also votes IS.
IS votes OL in post 1.
CB votes OL in post 2 and unvotes in post 5. CB votes IS in post 8.

The number of the post means the number of the post in the whole thread. I usually put a bold line across the right side of the box which has the last vote of the day. Problems arise when there are many players and many votes as then you have to scroll the thing. You can always print it out though :)

with joy, Olio

I use Norinel's Count-Counter, with only slight modifications for format. If you've got a stable enough computer/browser, you can load the count-counter in one tab and your game thread in another, and just keep them correlated as it progresses. I think Norinel made a way to custom-load your player-list into a local copy of the program, but I've never had to mess with that so far. If it goes down, I can just start over from whenever my last vote count was.

I use four columns of Excel file: (name) (voted) (unvoted) (wagon is at). One of the two middle columns will be blank in any given row, as needed; unvote, vote X gets two lines.
I think it's pretty clear that TSS's awesomeness did alter the roles each of us recieved, and thus he's obviously pro-town. -- Save The Dragons

Not easily; you'd have to download the code and change a few lines.

As a prospective mod (I'm on the waiting list for my first game to mod) I tried out your program and it's awesome! But it would be so much better if you didn't have to type in the full list of players every time. Could you not write a version which did this, which people could download? You would be a hero (and I would certainly always tick the "powered by" option :) ).

the is sweet and will save loads of time if i don;t need to type out the vote count thing and add the bb code *adds it to favourites*

p.s i will do the "power by" bit because i can understand that it must have taken ages to write the code for that and get it working properly, cheers

Yeah, I guess I could, and I thought of an easyish (For me) way of doing it, but it'd take a little time, which is one thing I don't have a lot of at the moment.

This sounds like a job for another scummer who can program to volunteer for! Not me I am afraid, far beyond my abilities.

I usually get a text file, and just go through the thread post by post for each day noting how everyone's voted and how that changed the bandwagon, getting something like:

Billy-Bob:
- Vote Joe-Bob (0->1) [Billy-Bob placed the first vote on Joe-Bob...]
- Unvote Joe-Bob (5->4) [...but removed it when the bandwagon was at 5 votes]
- Vote Mary-Sue (1->2)

Mary-Sue:
- Vote Joe-Bob (1->2)
- Unvote Joe-Bob (4->3)

etc. Then when people die, I go back and change the names to the colour of their now-revealed alignment, so you can see who's been voting mafia and who hasn't. It's very time-consuming and prone to error though.

Generally though all of these tactics I don't find to be hugely useful - I'd be interested to hear from people who find that vote-counting regularly helps them catch scum more than just keeping a keen eye on people who seem keen to bandwagon. I don't disbelieve it can work... just that it hasn't really helped me yet.

I will probably just bring up wordpad and have each player with the person they are voting listed next to them. Then I will simply change them when the person changes their vote.

I usually keep a list on my notepad, which works with mini games, but I've never modded a large game so I should think that would be harder. A spreadsheet would be nice too.

Olio - thanks for posting your system. I like it. Do you use a different sheet for every Day, or do you just lump everything together?

I use a text editor with text dragging capabilities (MS-word or MSVC++).

At the beginning of the day, I do the following:

Player A -
Player B -
Player C -
Player D -
Player E -
Not Voting - Player A, Player B, Player C, Player D, Player E,

Then, when Player B votes for Player E, I drag Player B's name to Player E's row, then drag Player E's row to the top (or to the appropriate place so that the players with more votes are always higher up), like so:

Player E - Player B,
Player A -
Player B -
Player C -
Player D -
Not Voting - Player A, Player C, Player D, Player E,

then if Player D votes for Player C

Player E - Player B,
Player C - Player D,
Player A -
Player B -
Player D -
Not Voting - Player A, Player C, Player E,

then Player A votes for Player C

Player C - Player D, Player A,
Player E - Player B,
Player A -
Player B -
Player D -
Not Voting - Player C, Player E

and so on and so forth. This method lets players see who has the most votes quickly, and also lets you know who get there first when it comes down to a deadline.

I use a piece of software developed by a guy at FBG for vote counting, logging, etc.

http://www.nls.net/mp/bpalicia/wolf/wolfware.html it is rather helpful. I will have to compare it to Norinel's program.

just check out norinels program, and it looks to be an effective little tool and likely effective for just simple vote management.

The website from FBG is very cool, with the exception that it can't handle spaces in names. Is there any workaround coming for that?
