Prisonner's Dilemma

Principle

- Each player aims is to gain the maximum points.
- There will be 4 rounds of play, each lasting 5 turns.
- For each round, each player will be paired with another player. These player will play together Iterated Prisonner's Dilemma.

Iterated Prisonner's Dilemma - Scoring

- Each turn, the two players choose between "Volunteer" and "Defect". Their reward is based on the two player's choice:
[mrow][col]A Volunteers[col]A DefectsB Volunteers[col]A: 5, B: 5[col]A: 10, B: -10B Defects[col]A: -10, B: 10[col]B: -5, B: -5

- At the end of a round, a player score is the sum of its score at each turn.
- Players that end with a round score strictly lower than 0 lose an additional 10 points.
- Final score of a player is the sum of all its round scores.
- Players are ranked according to their final score.

Other rules

- Unless otherwise stated, players can speak with each other in anyway at any time. I would enjoy if each player pair use the provided quicktopic so that I can reveal everything at the end.
- The first turn of each round will last 48 hours. All other turns will last 24 hours.
- After each turn, I will reveal the choices publicly in the thread.

Special Round rules

After the first round, each round will some additionnal rules:
Round 2 rules wrote:* Players are not paired randomly
* At the beginning of the round, you have 2 days to find a partner. Once you find a partner, both of you must state so in the thread, and you will play the round together.
* Players that have not found a partner with get a -10 penalty after the two days are elapsed and will be paired randomly
Round 3 rules wrote:* Players are paired randomly with someone they didn't already play with.
* Players can't communicate with each other once the pairing are known.
Round 4 rules wrote:* Players are paired together according to current ranking
* This round will last 50 turns instead of 5
* Payouts of each turn are divided by 10, except the last ten, which are only divided by 5.
* You have two days to discuss with your partner.
* After the two days, you must give my an algorithm to decide whether you Volunteer or Defect, based on your opponent previous choice. I will run the two algorithms myself.
Mod Notes

This game should be correctly balanced, as no breaking strategy should exist. Actually, it can be shown that a perfectly rational player will always lose the game. If you feel you have found a loophole in the rules, you are welcome to notify me.

Signups

- Signups will be open for minimum 3 days and until at least 6 players have joined.
- If more than 6 players join during the 3 days and this number is odd, I will wait until a last player joins, in order to have an even number of playes.
- Anyone is welcome, but I ask that each player tries to do its best. If I feel a player is only there to help/damage another player, I reserve the right to remove this player. You are obviously not allowed to join with two accounts.

As asked by one player, it is acceptable to send me an algorithm to take care of your choices, even if we are not in round 4. If you don't send me an action for a turn, i'll use it instead.

You might also say, that as long as some condition is satisfied, you don't need time to discuss with your opponent / to think in order to take your move. If all players are in this situation, i'll simply accelerate turns until some player is in a situation outside the condition.

I can't speak for him. You are free to use pms if you want to remember your existence to him. Anyways, I'd like a choice in the next 12 hours or I'll pick a choice for you*.

* I have decided before the game of a way to decide choices for players that fail to send one without having declared a default choice. I'll not reveal how I'll do it.

If partner volunteers, no-sender volunteers.
If partner defects, no-sender volunteers.

Punish the no-sender as harshly as you can.

Smiles are fading, blades have been unsheathed. The illusion of cooperation is leaving place to the bare reality of deceit and betrayal. Only one pair is still showing faith in human nature. For how long?

A cartel is a formal (explicit) agreement among competing firms. It is a formal organization of producers that agree to coordinate prices. Cartels usually occur in an oligopolistic industry, where there is a small number of sellers and usually involve homogeneous products. Cartel members may agree on such matters as price fixing, total industry output, market shares, allocation of customers, allocation of territories, bid rigging, establishment of common sales agencies, and the division of profits or combination of these. The aim of such collusion (also called the cartel agreement) is to increase individual members' profits by reducing competition.

Sorry, I got a bit busy for the weekend. Unfortunately, it seems I wasn't the only one, since no player sent me a choice.

I have default choices for 3 players, so I will need the three other to give me a choice to end this turn. Prod pms will go out soon.
