Tech Tree Mafia

(aka Galactic Civilizations 2 Mafia)


The United Planets. The last, best hope for peace in an increasingly warlike galaxy.

Here, the great races - the Arcean Empire, the Altarian Resistance, the Drath Legion, the Drengin Empire, the Iconian Refuge, the Korath Clan, the Dominion of Korx, the Krynn Consulate, the Thalan Empire, the Torian Confederation, the Yor Collective, and last but not least the Terran Alliance - meet to deliberate on the issues of the day, in an attempt to resolve the galaxy's conflicts without conflict.

Well, until yesterday, when the observers sent to the United Planets by the strange, long-faced minor race known as the Scottlingas were slaughtered by an unknown hand... and their homeworld was wiped out by a Terror Star constructed by assailants unknown.

But... only a major race could have constructed a Terror Star so suddenly...

So this atrocity must have been committed by a member of the United Planets... or a conspiracy of multiple members...

The United Planets was supposed to be the last, best hope for peace. It failed. But it is now something more... the last, best hope for victory...

Find the conspiracy or conspiracies within and destroy them... before they destroy you.

Quick guide to the role PM:- Scum role PMs differ from town role PMs in only two aspects: their alignment will appears as "XXX Mafia", "Serial Killer", or the like instead of "Town" in all places marked "alignment" or "faction", and scum role PMs will contain the factional ability block quoted above. Town players have no factional abilities.
- A Mafia faction with 3 players will have a third player added to the list of Mafia members
- Any Mafia faction will be named the "XXX Mafia", where X is a placeholder. This is true even if it's the only faction in the game (read: Mafiosos can't conclude anything about the setup from their faction's name). If a Mafia faction has 2 members, it has daytalk; if it has three members, it has nighttalk only.

I will do my best not to use the first aspect of this rule, but if I decide that something qualifies as a Rule 1 violation then it is a Rule 1 violation. (See also Rule 0.)
<2> If there is a conflict between a role and the rules, the role wins.
<3> Claiming that another player is your scumbuddy will result in a modkill. I have zero tolerance for scumbuddy claims.
<4> With the exception of QuickTopic links and hidden information from ongoing games other than this one, you may quote anything you want.
<4a> All nontown players will have the Mafia Falseclaim ability, but this is due to the mod not wanting to go to the trouble of removing that ability from each role PM. No nontown player should actually need to use Mafia Falseclaim in this game (see Rule 4b for details).
<4b> Role PMs of nontown players will differ from normal PMs only in role title and a factional abilities.
<5> You may not talk with other people about this game outside of the thread (but see Rule 2).

<9a> All nights will last 72 hours unless stated otherwise.
<10> If no one has reached majority by deadline, one of the following three things will happen:
a) If a majority of voting players are voting for a player, that player will be lynched.

<12> Don't drink and post, lest ye receive Public Humilitation. (This rule is an injoke and doesn't actually do anything.)
<13> This is a traditional Cop Head Start setup. The game will start during Night 0, a no-kill night where factional kills cannot be used.
<13a> The game thread will be locked at night. (Yes, in a Tar game. You can freak out now.)
<14> When you die, stop posting. You may make a single "Bah!"/"Frak you!"/etc. post in the thread. You may not include game content in this post. In addition, once you are dead, please do not discuss the game with anyone other than the Mod until the game is over, as this makes the mod's life easier.
<15> All players need to post at least once every 72 hours, or inform me if this is not possible. If you do not post for 72 hours, you will be prodded. If you are prodded, then you will need to post something (a simple "/prodded" will suffice if you're short on time) within 72 hours or you will be replaced. You will receive an Official Warning the second time you fail to post for more than 72 hours. The third time you fail to post for 72 hours, you will be replaced.
<15a> If you have limited access, you need to post to this effect, either in V/LA or in the thread. If I prod you despite you declaring V/LA status, call me on it and I will be duly embarrassed.
<15b> If you post before I get around to handing out the prod, you avoid the prod.
<15c> Players who have a history of being lurkers may be Officially Warned for a first prod and replaced for a second.

The Tech Tree:


All players begin with the Level 0 activated ability (Invent Ability) and no other abilities (with the exception of factional abilities). Each night, a player may either use Invent Ability to gain a new ability from this list that he or she meets the prerequisites for OR may use an ability he or she already has on a target of his or her choice.

When dealing with prerequisites, note that prerequisites are listed as OR rather than AND; you only need to have one of the prerequisites for an ability to learn that ability.


Level 0 Ability:

Invent Ability (Active)
- Each night, you may select an ability from the list of abilities in the third post that you meet all the prerequisites for. You will gain that ability at the beginning of the next day.

Level 1 Abilities:

Roleblock (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. You will prevent any active abilities that player performs that night.

- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. You will learn whether that player was targeted by any abilities that night.

Reputation (Triggered)
- If you are the last surviving member of your faction, you win the game and remove yourself from the game. This effect does not end the game.
(Note: If there are multiple scum factions in the game, they count as a single faction for the purposes of this ability.)

Veto (Active)
- Each day, you may target a player other than yourself. That player requires an additional vote to lynch until the end of that game day. This ability is a Rapid Action.
(It resolves immediately upon receipt. This ability does nothing if used after a player has already reached lynch count.)

Level 2 Abilities:


Jailkeep (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. Any activated abilities that player uses fail to resolve, and the first killing action that targets that player that night will have no effect.

- At the beginning of the night after you die, if you are in the graveyard, you may target a player. You will attempt to kill that player.
Prerequisites:
Bodyguard OR Bulletproof Vest

Bus Driver (Active)
- Each night, you may target two players other than yourelf. Each action that targets one of those players will be redirected to the other.
Prerequisites:
Roleblock OR Blink

Grant Bonus Ability (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. That player may choose an additional ability other than a Level 4 ability that he or she meets all prerequisites for. If he or she does, he or she gains that ability at the beginning of the next day.
Prerequisites:
Boost OR Reputation

Unblockable (Passive)
- Active and factional abilities you use cannot be roleblocked or prevented.
(They can still be redirected. Shroud can block unblockable abilities, but if two or more unblockable abilities target a player with shroud on the same night, the unblockable abilities bypass shroud protection.)

Nightkill Immunity (Autocast)
- The first killing action that targets you this night will fail to resolve.
(You automatically cast this ability on yourself at the beginning of each night. This ability CAN be roleblocked, but not redirected, and does not count as your activated ability for the night.)

Bulletproof Vest OR Blink

Hammer Brother (Passive/Triggered)
- As long as you are the last person voting for a player, your vote counts as two votes. If your extra vote hammers a player you may use an additional activated ability the next night
(please note that an ability used via Hammer Brother cannot be the same as your regular activated ability for the night)

Creativity (Autocast)
- Each night, if you do not use the Invent Ability ability, you may select an ability from the list of abilities in the third post that you meet all the prerequisites for. You will gain that ability at the beginning of the next day.
(You automatically cast this ability on yourself at the beginning of each night. This ability CAN be roleblocked, but not redirected, and does not count as your activated ability for the night.)

Message Sender OR Imitate

Espionage (Triggered)
- At the beginning of each game day, you will learn the name of a random ability that a randomly selected living player has learned.
(You will be informed which player has that ability. You do not start receiving Espionage results until one day/night cycle has passed since you learned Espionage.)

Level 3 Abilities:


Doctor (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. The first killing action that targets that player tonight will have no effect.

Jailkeep OR Bus Driver

Vengeance (active)
- Each night, you may target a player. If that player is killed by another player that night, then at the beginning of the next night you will kill the attacker.
Prerequisites:
Vengeful OR Hammer Brother

Double Life (Triggered)
- The first time you are killed by any means, you will be brought to life. Your alignment will not be revealed when this happens.
Prerequisites:
Nightkill Immunity OR Autopsy

Redirector (Active)
- Each night, you may target two players other than yourself. Any action the first player makes will target the second player instead of its original target.
(You may not redirect a player to him- or herself. That player will not be informed that he was redirected.)

Prerequisites:
Bus Driver OR Unblockable

Masonify (Active)
- Once during the game, at night, you may target another player. You will gain the ability to talk to that player outside the thread at any time at the beginning of the next game day.
Prerequisites:
Speak With Dead OR Grant Bonus Ability

Track (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. You will learn who that player targeted that night.
(If your target was roleblocked, you will learn that he or she targeted no players. If your target was redirected, you will see who he or she was redirected to instead of his or her original target(s).)

Watch (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. You will learn which players, if any, targeted your target that night.

- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. You will learn whether your target has a killing and/or a self-protective ability.

- Once during the game, at night, you may target a player in the graveyard. You will revive that player. This ability will be used on you automatically if you are killed and have not depleted this ability.
(The revived player's alignment will be revealed.)

Prerequisites:
Track OR Double Life

Recruit (Active)
- Once during the game, at night, you may target another player. If that player is not a member of a Mafia faction, then at the beginning of the next game day that player becomes a member of your faction and you gain the ability to talk to that player at any time.
(That player gains your faction's win condition and any factional abilities your faction possesses.)

Prerequisites:
Vengeance OR Masonify

Archangel (Active)
- Once during the game, at night, you may target another player. From the beginning of the next game day, that player cannot be killed by any means other than lynching so long as your are alive.
Prerequisites:
Doctor OR Watch

Reflector (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. Any abilities that target that player will be redirected to their origin.
Prerequisites:
Doctor OR Redirector

Nullify (Active)
- Once during the game, at night, you may target another player. From the beginning of the next game day, that player will be permanently roleblocked so long as your are alive.
Prerequisites:
Redirector OR Motivate

Rolecop (Active)
- Each night, you may target a player other than yourself. You will learn that player's alignment and all non-factional abilities that player has learned.
Prerequisites:
Track OR Gunsmith

Global Roleblock (Active)
- Once during the game, at night, you may use this ability. When you do, every other ability that is used that night will be roleblocked. This ability has priority over every other ability in the game.
Prerequisites:
Shroud OR Double Life

Self-Motivate (Passive)
- You may use an additional active or factional ability each day/night cycle.
Prerequisites:
Motivate OR Copy

Rig Elections (Passive)
- You have X additional votes, where X is the number of dead players of your faction in the graveyard.
(You may vote for more than one player at a time.)

Prerequisites:
Double Vote OR Watch

Assume Mantle (Active)
- Once during the game, you may target a player in the graveyard. You will learn each non-factional ability that player had learned at the time of his or her death that you did not already know.
Prerequisites:
Gunsmith OR Copy

Technology Victory (Passive/Triggered)
- When you learn Technology Victory, you gain two (2) time counters. At the beginning of each game turn, remove a time counter from yourself. When you remove the last, you win the game and remove yourself from the game. Winning the game in this way may or may not end the game, at the Mod's discretion.

It is now the Confirmation Stage and Night 0. Role PMs are going out. When you receive your role PM, please confirm via return PM. In addition, roles that can talk outside the thread can begin talking as soon as they receive their role PMs.

Finally, it is also Night 0. During Night 0, you may use ONLY activated abilities (but NOT factional abilities such as Mafia/Serial Killer kills)... so it's a fair bet that this means that you're going to be using Invent Ability tonight. While I'd prefer it if you sent N0 choices in with your confirm PM, you can send a second PM later with the choice.

Night 0 ends in 48 hours, or when all players have confirmed and sent in night choices (whichever comes first). If a player fails to confirm, I will replace that player before starting Day 1.

Final note: While I'll almost certainly create an alt shortly for the purpose of receiving role actions, I don't have it up yet. Send confirmation PMs and N0 actions to Tarhalindur, and I'll let you know when the alt account goes up.

It has come to my attention that the Tech Tree I copy-pasted was somehow not the correct (most recent) version... and I'm not entirely sure what happened to the correct version. A few abilities have been updated (errors involving Creativity, plus new versions of
Elite Bodyguard
Vengeance and Technology Victory). More updates may come as I catch any remaining errors.

You can use only one activated ability (ability marked with the "Active" tag) per day/night cycle (so if you use Veto you can't use Invent the next night; a Day/Night cycle are the day and night with the same number, such as Day 1/Night 1). Passive, triggered, and autocast abilities do NOT count towards this limit. It's the same as in past Tar games, people - what's so hard about it this time?

In other news, all players have confirmed, but a few still have N0 choices outstanding. Night 0 will continue while those players send choices in.

You awoke this morning in expectation (or dread, depending on the species) of today's United Planets meeting... and quickly found yourself mired in something far greater.

First, the Scottlingas ambassador was found murdered in his quarters.

Second, the Scottlingas home system was found blown up by an unknown Terror Star.

What's more, the few files you found in the Scottlingas ambassador's room show evidence for some kind of conspiracy... and you don't have time to get your police forces to look into the deal...

I thought about this, but realized that scum can kill one every night other than night 1, so it'd turn out to be, if a normal 9v3 (obviously that's a huge assumption):
After Night.. Town's Choice.. Mafia's Choice
0 Boost - BP
1 9v3 Grant Bonus - Vengeful
2 8v3 Masonify - Vengeance
3 7v3 Tech Victory - Vigilante
4 6v3 Timer 1 - Kill Townie
5 2v3 Timer 2 - Mafia wins

The only problem is that Mafia may go for vig as well, get an extra kill. Or a townie who gets vengeful might shoot and kill someone else. Also, anyone who goes for the tech victory might die and because town isn't really going for a win other than tech victory, anyone killed loses. Tech victory is anti-town, so let's not go down that road.

The thing we most have to look out for as town is getting vote screwed. Double vote and rig election could be really powerful for scum as it may end a lynch very unexpectedly. As a result, we have to be careful at any mylo/lylo situation.

Bulletproof will be a handy tool to have for pretty much all town. I think it might be a good idea to have everyone grab that either tonight, last night or perhaps night 2. It "wastes" a night of inventing/actions, but it also neutralizes several scum kills (scum then has to kill someone twice to take them out). Other than BP, I think diversifying will be good. But what do you guys think? Should everyone get BP tonight if they haven't already?

I don't think we should specify who got BP and who didn't. I think we SHOULD all move towards getting NK-immunity with BP as the next action for those who didn't get it.

You know zoraster, that the mafia can go for Technology Victory as well. If we did this, there would be no reason for the mafia to not cooperate or for them to start killing people. I can't think of any reason that everyone winning like this wouldn't work, though it would probably be a pretty dull way to win.

I'd bet there's mafia abilities to punish tech wins. Like they mafia is alerted when someone is a tech away form it.

This was, my initial plan. I was going to request that the weakest mafiate claim as a show of good faith. That way if the kills started we'd at least get a scum out of it, while we all worked towards the same wincon.

But then Tar changed it.

This isn't terrible, although it's really only relevant if you want to pick Blink first, and frankly Blink is a pretty anti-town role (it doesn't HAVE to be, but it's more scum friendly than town friendly by default). That said, it does lead to Bus Driver which is a prereq for THREE level 3 roles (I don't know that any other role allows this): Doctor, Watcher, and Redirector. Still, I think so long as we say that everyone should have either BP or NK Immunity by night 2, we're golden. There's not much reason to get both unless you're really paranoid and going for Revive.

And yes, we technically COULD have everyone come out and go for a tech victory, but why bother play?

I'm pretty sure there's not, given that this is a small town game, with everyone's role PM's being posted in the first post, along with what it would look like if they were mafia.

And again, even if they somehow did, scum would have no reason to object to a mass Technology Victory, since they would be a part of it and win along with everybody else.

Actually, if we did do this, I don't see any reason that for the whole mafia team not to claim.

And I'm pretty sure that a Tech Victory wouldn't end the game, and that Tar just added that line to scare the players into not trying a plan like this. It reminds me of that "You may or may not count as a faction" line in the Outsider win con in LotA mafia. Even if it did, we could coordinate it so that everyone wins at once.

Anyway, enough of that, while I'm pretty sure that a mass Tech Victory would work, I'd prefer not to bother winning like that.

I do like this everyone go for BP idea of zoraster's and Neto's, though. I say we should all go for it.

Tar assured me there was something that would make it more difficult than we anticipated. And plus, the may or may not end the game thing means he doesn't HAVE to be scaring us. It normally wouldn't but if we go for a mass victory he'll just trigger it.

Ding ding ding we have a winner! Trying for mass Tech Victory is a fast way to ensure that exactly ONE player wins the game (if more than one olayer reaches Tech Victory at the same time while trying to mass Tech Victory, I'll random.org for the winner). - Tar
