Mini 836: Commie Mafia (Game Over)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Aug 20, 2009 3:12 pm

Post by Kublai Khan »

Good morning Patriots! What a fine day it is here in Anytown, USA. You've got clean air, good Christian morals, and a vibrant Democracy--the way God had intended. So let's take a moment to salute our fine flag and recite the pledge of Alle... Great Caesar's Ghost! Someone has taken the American flag and stomped it into the dust! And on the flagpole is a.. is a... Goddamn Pinko Commie Ruskie flag! Take it down! Destroy it! Aaah!

Thank God that's done. Hey wait, there's a note tied to it. It's from the Commie Mafia. They say that they have already infiltrated us and will kill someone every night until we agree to abandon Democracy and God and embrace Communism & Joseph Stalin.

Well, not on my watch. Here's my plan: We're going to lynch somebody every day, then regardless of outcome we all go to sleep and repeat it again the following day with whomever's left. Great, that's a perfect fail-proof plan. Let's do this!

Game Rules:

Fundamental:
  • This is a game. Have fun.
  • Be nice to other players. they are real people, not your mortal enemies.
  • Rules subject to amendment as I realize I forgot stuff.
General Gameplay and Etiquette:
  • You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
  • There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it.
  • If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline. If I do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline your night actions will be randomized. Please note that no action is a random possibility.
  • Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the me know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
  • After all players have confirmed, there will be a 24-hour period for any group(s) with the ability to night talk to confer. There will no night actions allowed during this period.
Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:
  • A simple majority of all living members must agree on one person for a Lynch to occur (simple majority = ½ # of living players +1, rounded down).
  • Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.
  • Please submit votes as:
    Vote: PlayerName
    . Unvotes aren't really necessary.
  • Getting cute with trick voting may result in modkilling.
  • You may
    Vote: No Lynch
    - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a Lynch.
  • Deadlines will be implemented if I feel that discussion is lagging. At deadline, whomever has the most votes will be lynched. In the case of a tie, the person who reached the tie number first will be lynched. If noone has a vote at deadline, a No Lynch will occur.
  • Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all living players, including the lynched player, may continue to post until the thread is locked.
  • Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post except for a brief “Bah!”-type post.
Miscellaneous/Mechanics:
  • Red
text is reserved for the Mod. No invisible/small text is allowed.
  • Votecounts will be posted once every 2 or 3 real life days or when requested.
  • If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM me. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
  • I may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
  • Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.

  • Prods will be sent on request or after 3 days of inactivity. If I have to prod you more than 4 times, I may just replace you.
  • Rules violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill. Modkills may be accompanied by a change to day/night.
  • If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.
Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
Here are 2 sample PMs that may or may not be in this game.

Vanilla Townie

Flavor
: You're an Average Joe. You may not know how to do anything special for your country, but by-God you love her and you will use your American Public Education to find the filthy commies and your Good Christian Moral Conscience to lynch the bastards.

Role Title
: Pro-Town Vanilla Townie
Night Abilities
: None
Win Condition
: You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Cop

Flavor
: You're a proud American. What's more, you're the law in this town. The town should have been upset with you that commies infiltrated the town, but you were busy at Capital City requesting funds for a new jail to replace the old burned down one. Since the commies' crime was so heinous and you don't have a jail, you're in favor of lynching until the target is dead.

Role Title
: Pro-Town Cop
Night Abilities
: You may target a player to be inspected, thus discovering their alignment. You will receive a Private Message from the moderator containing either [Anti-Town] or [Pro-Town].
Win Condition
:You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.

Role PMs going out now. After all players confirm, any groups with night-talking abilities will have 24 hours to talk before the game starts.

With 11 of 12 confirmed, I'll start the 24 hour discussion period. No night actions may be sent in at this moment. Day 1 will begin in 24 hours (approx. 11:59pm EST Saturday)

It's Day 1. The game starts now.

CoCo is V/LA until Monday then sporadic throughout the week.

mathcam hasn't picked up his role PM yet. I'm giving him until Monday night, after which I'll get a replacement.

Was this deliberately done to give mathcam, Cyberbob and le Chat the best odds of winning your vote? Why not 1d12?

Why not take the 1/12 risk of voting yourself?
Why not 1d11 with yourself excluded?
Why cop out and use dice in the first place?

Please explain how using dice is a "cop out".

Yeah, I struggle to see how using dice is any more of a cop out than a "Hi everybody" or a "Die, die, die" accompaniment to an early day 1 vote. But I'm happy to be enlightened.

If you're going to randomly select a player with dice, why not be fair and include yourself in it, or at least give everyone equal odds?

I'm personally not a fan of the RVS, but it seems to be a culture etched in the meta of this site, so much so that deviations from this tend to raise eyebrows. The psyche behind random voting is that no votes are
truly
random, and scum have to actively choose to vote a buddy or a townsperson.

I don't really buy into that logic though, and I will happily endorse alternate starts to a game, as you may occasionally generate odd tells from a unique situation scum isn't used to. But dice don't serve either purpose. It's an active commitment to something you have no control over - the only tell others can derive from the post is the choice to use dice, which looks like one avoiding responsibility for the outcome.

I believe the argument is that using dice eliminates the possibility of someone pointing to your vote and saying "oh that wasn't random, your "reasoning" is masking something else!". Especially with a night start like we had in this game.

Nothing wrong with dice starts at all. Ive used them in different games and gotten friendly responses, nonchalant responses, and negative responses though. They are great for discussion, though!

I'm slightly tispy so I'll post more later.

Is this game really considered a night start, Cyberbob? Nobody was able to make
night actions
. I know that scum (and possibly closed masonries!) were able to talk with themselves so I guess they can determine who to vote for if they cared enough but I don't know if I would call it a night start. Eh, terminology, its never global until its forced down all our throats.

vote: mathcam

You never know if the extra pressure is going to make or break a late confirmation. Does anyone think there is anything special about the fact that mathcam did not confirm his role but the scum (and possible masonries I guess) were able to talk for 24 hours? The AIM meta-game mafia player in me wants to think that he was not a talker because people were given the chance to talk without him but the Forum Mafia-goer in me wants to slap the shit out of myself for even mentioning that sort of metagame. So what does everyone else think? :]

Mod:
What's the reasoning behind the order of the list of players? They're not alphabetic, nor sorted by chronological order of sign-ups or confirmations.

When the thread was first opened, I'm fairly sure the list was alphabetical, but there were two names missing. Checking back after about 30 minutes, the two missing names were added but the list was shuffled when confirmations came in.

Hey le Chat, are you an alt? Or do you just play elsewhere?

If anyone can point me to any games where dice-based random votes were a factor in scum's strategy, then by all means. What's the night conversation like?

Scum A: "Just make your first vote with the dice! You won't need to take responsibility for your random vote!"

Scum B: "Yeah, that'll screw town over! Brilliant f'ing idea!"

I'll concede that the mathematical implications of using the two six sided dice stands, but at best it's a conversation piece and would be silly to try to spin it into a scumtell.

In other news....

So...you're not a fan of the RVS, but you still participate because you don't want to raise eyebrows? Don't like sticking out? Sketchy.
