CARTAGENA RULES

Cartagena tries to reproduce a famous 1672 jailbreak of about 30 pirates from the supposedly impregnable fortress of Cartagena. It is said that not long after this astounding escape, a game celebrating it became popular in the pirate coves of the Caribbean; and that a faster, more chance-oriented version was played in Jamaica.

The game in brief

Each player controls a group of 6 pirates and tries to have all 6 of them escape through the tortuous underground passage that connects the fortress ("Start") to the port, where a sloop ("Finish") is waiting. As soon as a player has brought his 6 pirates aboard, the game is over.

Preparations

After 5 people have joined, the 6 pirates for each player will be placed in the "Not Played" table. The cards will be shuffled and the board will be randomly generated using random.org. Six cards will be dealt and PMed to each player.

How to Play

Play will begin with the player randomly chosen to start (not necessarily an advantage). Whenever it is your turn, you may make from 1 to 3 moves. Two kinds of moves are allowed:

• play a card and advance a pirate
  
  or
  
• move a pirate backwards and receive one or two new cards.

Moves may be performed in any order and in any combination, but at least one move must be made at each turn.

The two kinds of moves:

Play a card and advance a pirate:

Play a card, select one of your pirates (either one already in the passage or one who has yet to enter it) and advance him to the next vacant space marked with the same color on the card you just played (vacant meaning not occupied by another pirate).

If there is no vacant space with the sign you selected ahead of the pirate you intend to move, you can advance him all the way to the end of the passage.

Move a pirate backwards and receive one or two new cards:

Select one of your pirates and move him backwards to the first space occupied by one or two pirates, whether yours or belonging to an opponent. While moving backwards, vacant spaces and spaces occupied by three pirates are ignored and passed by. (Note that there can never be more than three pirates on a space.)
If your pirate moving backwards lands on a space occupied by 1 pirate, you receive 1 card; if occupied by 2 pirates, 2 cards.

But keep in mind that when moving backwards you are not allowed to skip a space occupied by one pirate in order to reach one occupied by two.

End of Game

First to land his 6 pirates at the finish wins the game.

CARTAGENA MOVE SYNTAX

Please use the following syntax when making moves. It will make the moderating easier, thereby making the game run faster and smoother.

Play a card to advance a pirate

A quick tip: If you move a pirate backward for your 1st or 2nd move, it may be wise to wait on further moves until you receive your new cards. You may receive a card that helps you more than your current cards.

4) Your cards will be PMed to you. Each PM will give the cards that compromise your hand.
5) After each turn has ended, I will announce whose turn it is next. If an incorrect play is made, I will announce it and allow the player to play again. This does not extend the deadline.
6) Each player will have 4 days from my update to move. If a move is not made, the turn will be "passed". I will try to find a replacement for a player that deadlines 3 times in a row, but the game will not stall while waiting.
7) When the deck is depleted, the used cards will be shuffled to begin a new draw deck.
8) If you are comfortable in the rules of the game and know that your turn is next, feel free to make the turn prior to my update. Remember, however, that if you do not realize the board has changed, you may miss out on a better play.
9) If you see an error, please point it out as soon as possible.

So I assume the the Finish space is an exception to the 'No space will contain more than 3 pirates' rule?

Well, once you hit the finish space, you move to the "Completed" part of the table, so you're never technically on it. However, that is an exception.

Yep. You would be done. Obviously, part of the strategy is a good mix of moving and picking up cards.
