Beep . . . . The heart monitor flatlines. It's a code purple, which is another way of saying the doctors have no clue what to do so any color code will do. There is crying and screaming, and a whole flurry of movement that ranges from flapping white-coats to fists clenching in empty side-pockets.

Eventually they give up, too much time passes. Only the Mom stays near, urging desperately for a miracle, staring right through him. She squeezes the Kid's hand so tight that the fingers twitch.

And the heart monitor beeps again.

"There's been some brain damage, memory mostly," says the doctor. "From what we can tell so far."

The Mom nods, grateful regardless. She'll take any trade off at this point. The doctor leaves her as she starts humming a tune to herself. "I can't walk out," she whispers to the sleeping Kid, "because I love you too much."

Waking up, the Kid smiles the kind of smile that won't ever know why his parents got divorced, or why his dad left in shame for trying to pull the plug, or why his mom refuses to drive. All the bad memories are watered down, the past completely clear. No more hiding in his bedroom pretending not to hear his parents fighting. Those days are gone from the Kid's existence.
