From what I've seen of his play, I could imagine him doing it simply for fun. The opportunity arose and he went with it. There had already been a bit of issue with them thinking they were at L-1 so it wouldn'tve been hard to pull off.
I can agree that starting it with the intent of getting a town to claim scum wouldn't be a likely tactical move. But whiskers has already pointed out why there's not really a down-side to it.

So right now I figure "For shits and giggles".

I see it as the situation could be fun, he had a way of going back on it if no one went along with it, and it would appeal to his sense of superiority.
This makes sense with a certain amount of apathy toward the game. While I haven't played any other games with him to compare, he seems to exhibit this apathy.

So I read on. I have two major comments.

I think is the real townclaim. I think he is telling the truth that he thinks his so-called lynch was scum-driven, which is not something scum generally think, given one scumteam.. (which we have no reason to doubt at this time.)

First off, you're missing the crucial slip that I've already pointed out, and then the additional shitty point. Second off, that was a huge appeal to emotion.

When the person admits they're scummy, but they're town it's kind of like North Korea.

Like the South Korea knows that North Korea is up to shit, and North Korea admits they were, but now they're not.

Does that mean they are now? Prob.
