Let me begin by both apologizing, and by giving thanks to our three Townies.
Of all the games in my Mafia with a Twist series to date, this was by far the most ambitious, and the most likely to get
me
actually lynched. After all, it would require people to be genuinely playing a game that wasn't what they thought it was, which was terribly deceptive of me. In my defense, I have been very explicit that these are potentially
very
bastardly modded, but that may or may not feel a bit hollow right now. After all, you've been taking notes, making reads, and watching as player flip alignments that may or may not make sense to you. You've invested time and energy in this game, and I don't know whether or not you'll feel that energy was validated. To that end, I apologize for thrusting you into a role you may or may not have wanted.
That said, you Townies have been absolutely vital to this enterprise, and I owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude. Without you, this game would not have been possible, and this grand experiment could not come to fruition. I began having no idea if it would work or not, and I hope you find the results as fascinating as I have. But let's cut the chit-chat, shall we? I wanted to find out this:
Could an informed
majority
fool an uninformed
minority
?
What if the scum didn't number 23% of the players, but instead numbered
77%
of the players? And I'm not referring to a bunch of factions, I mean
what if nearly every player in the game were on one team against the other team? What would that look like?
To answer that question, I give you this game, this
Mafia with a Twist 4: All the World's a Stage
.
If you haven't guessed by now, the premise is this. The "Mafia" (in this game coined the "Actors") are each a special kind of Death Millers, with night talk. At the start of the game, they determined the order in which players would "die", one at a time. The night kills would be easy, one of them would simply feign death. However, the lynches would be more difficult, as they'd have to realistically steer the town into picking the "correct" lynch, all the while diminishing their voting power day by day. The Townies could end up winning by being so unpredictable as to cause a lynch the Actors had not planned.
All in all, the Actors did indeed Follow the Script, and each Day's lynch was correctly made. On this final day, each Townie (the only players left in the game) were sent separate, identical PMs:

Please read this PM carefully, as your win condition has changed.
It turns out this game is not quite what you thought. The question you're about to answer is now the sole determiner of whether you win or lose. So, tell me...
What was the Twist in this game?
Please think carefully upon your answer, and PM it to me within the next 72 hours. Your answer will be judged by an independent panel based on a prepared rubric. All will be revealed soon.
Each Townie would win if they correctly guessed what the Twist in the game was. If the Actors could fool at least 2 of the Townies, they would win. I employed the assistance of three judges (thanks, petroleumjelly, al_kohaulec, and mith!) to judge the correctness of responses based on this rubric, prepared before the game:
So, what were the responses we received? And what is the final result? Hit the spoiler tag below to open the envelope...

Flame is the last scum.
Not that you asked.
farside22's response was judged INCORRECT.

Thank you so very, very much to all players for your efforts in this game. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did watching it. I promise you Mafia with a Twist 5, whenever I have it polished and ready to go, won't be as crazy as this one was.
"When playing a game, the goal is to win, but it is the goal that is important, not the winning." -
I think the only change I would've made is it only takes one Townie getting it right to make the Actors lose.
But other than that, I thought this setup was absolutely brilliant. I want to nominate this for a Scummie (and it's a shame Thesp wasn't nommed for Modfather last year), but I'm going to hold off until I can see what the Townies thought.
