The part of the role he claimed there is essentially a loyal inventor, where not getting an item would be the guilty, but he had to mix the killing shit into his fakeclaim because he's really an arsonist. If he really had that role he would have tried to mechanically determine Hebi's alignment, if he was really interested in that which he must logically have been if he targeted her.
