I'm going to post a guide to controlling Windows 10's updates when I get my laptop back.
You're really losing a lot by reverting, you know.

Also, apparently some of the hardcore engineering programs don't work on windows 10, some of my engineering friends are complaining about matlab specifically.

You can remove the old os files after, and you end up saving space, also, you can schedule updates.

With only 2gigs free though, I don't know if you can attempt an install though

It just locked up on me this morning and even Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't respond. I don't know when is the last time I've had that happen. I guess early on in XP. 7/8 let me have a dark theme that was manageable and mostly pretty looking, but 10 is ugly and somehow less customizable in that respect.

I've been saying that I'm going to switch over the Linux as my primary OS for years, I think I may actually follow through with it this time.

That's not windows, there's something going on with your machine. Either a hardware issue or the install itself is corrupted. (Which is not windows 10's fault.) I've had experience with this problem before.

Themes should also carry over and be exactly the same. (You may need to reinstall a graphics driver to fix this one. My nvidia driver was not compatible with windows 10 when I upgraded and I had to download one that was.)

I don't know... I'll take your word for it, but it's seemingly been in a steady decline as far as usability goes. If I can't correlate that with Windows updates, then I'm not sure what to correlate that with. Though now that you mentioned a hardware issue, maybe I corrupted something, somehow when I tried using this LG TV at the hotel as a monitor. It seems like after I started doing that, everything has gotten significantly worse.

As far as themes goes, do you know a way that I have have black/dark background for my individual windows with white/light colored text? Other than using the High Contrast Black theme, I cannot seem to customize it in that way.

If you're install is merely corrupted you should be able to fix it either by reinstalling the os from scratch or using system restore to go back before the point your problems started.

I was drawing a blank on the themes cause I thought you were talking about the desktop background, but you're talking about the stuff where you can actually change the style of the windows you are opening. I don't think I've messed with that stuff since windows xp. I dunno if this would help but I'll post it. http://www.windowscentral.com/how-enabl ... windows-10 It does seem like they did make using dark themes trickier.

tried to go from 8.1 to 10, went through the steps etc, it warned it might take long and would require a couple of restarts. Fine. Let it do it's thing, went shopping.

Come back, a restart failed, system repair triggered but is unable to do anything, even with cd the windows build is unavailable, all in all nothing is possible except clearing the hard drive and doing a clean install.

Awaiting further developements atm.
Surrender, imagine and of course wear something nice.

I wish I could revert to vista but meh.

The one constant I've found is that the computers I have worked on that have been absolutely full of viruses didn't do windows updates. There's a reason they are automatically done now. That said, it would be nice if Microsoft would recode the system so that it can dynamically update without needing to reboot. It's one of the most annoying features of the system that has existed forever.

yep

i cringe when i go on my friends' computers and get 50 popups for random flash/video card/whatever updates

Grab it, watch the boards and user feedback for a few weeks and then decide if you want to install it. That is what I plan on doing.

How do I do this?

yup, that's exactly the issue, second time I was around and saw how and where it failed. I fear I don't have such easy access, so probably the workaround will be via iso->physical copy. Someday, when I have time.

I finally decided to hell with it and upgraded from Windows 7. No problems :)

I'd like my rounded corners to come back but I guess I'll get used to these. I also Googled for how to shrink the search to something reasonable, and I made sure to do the privacy settings while setting it up. So I feel pretty good about the whole experience and offer my first kudos to Microsoft in a long time.

If you want to try it, I'll happily swap computers with you.

Stupid thing doesn't know how to restart. I don't even understand why it can't do the updates when it shuts down and then in the morning when I turn the power back on. Although maybe that would have ended up as the same problem, but that apparently doesn't count as a restart.

The forced updates and the restarts it causes are an annoyance I'll give you that. The best you can do is schedule a restart so that it doesn't just do it whenever it wants.

Mine every so often says "Hey, I want to update some things, and I'm going to do it at <this time>, which will reboot your machine. You okay with that?" And I can change it to one that works for me. I think but am not sure that I get 48 hour warning.
