so this doesnt fit into my format exactly but like theres the way you mention curveballs and softballs as like an analogy for a kind of question and/or conversational interlude. and less attested there is like a hardball / maybe a fastball which is just like a straightforward difficult question e.g. should i get a divorce. and i'm thinking of maybe like a cut fastball would be a tough question that takes things in a slightly different direction than you thought. and a sinker would be something thats like more of a bummer than it initially sounded. i guess changeup already kind of tracks as a way to describe a question without needing to analogize to anything. 4 seam fastball would be like ok i'm actually just pretending to understand the different kinds of pitches... AS IS EVERYONE ELSE

especially pitchers. no pitcher has ever known how they were throwing the ball before it left their hand

whenever they do the little thing where they shake their head at the catcher's signs they're saying "i dont know what that is" "i dont know how to do that" "i think youre making that up" and then there's one they're like "ok i guess that one can be like my theoretical model"
