Newbie 373 - Scum wins!

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu May 17, 2007 6:21 am

Post by spectrumvoid »

Welcome to the wonderful world of mafia! What is this all about? It will all become clear soon... after some deaths...

Players alive (2):

bovik: scum
Ravenclaw
[/s] funkadillo: scum

Players dead (5):

Spinal
: doc.
Haschel Cedricson: townie.
Jack: townie.
Ripley
elias_the_thief
: townie
MissMoo: townie.

Game setup:

Either of the following are possible:
1) 2 scum, 1 cop, 1 doc, 3 townies.
2) 2 scum, 1 cop, 4 townies.
3) 2 scum, 1 doc, 4 townies.
4) 2 scum, 5 townies.

Role pms:

Note: role assignments are random.
You are
Mafia
, along with your partner _________. Your goal is to eliminate the pro-town players so that only you remain; you win if this happens. During the Day, try to blend in with the rest of the players, and get someone lynched (if that someone is not your partner or yourself, that will make things much easier). You may talk with your partner when it is not Day, and send me a choice via PM of who you wish to kill.

Note: You may talk with your partner privately during confirmations to plan strategy, but no kills will happen until Night One.
You are the
Doctor
, and you can protect people from harm. Each Night, you may send me a choice via PM of who to protect; if they come under attack by the Mafia, they will live. You win if the scum are eliminated, so choose wisely at Night, and try to lynch correctly during the Day.

Note: Doctors are 100% effective in Newbie Games (the person they protect will never die on the night they are protected). You may not protect yourself.
You are the
Cop
, and you can tell good from bad. Each Night, you may send a player's name to me; I will let you know if your investigation shows that they are Mafia or Town. You win if the scum are eliminated, so choose wisely at Night, and lynch well during the Day.

Note: Cops always get a correct result in Newbie Games (no sanity issues). You cannot investigate yourself.
You are a
Townie
, and you've got no special powers at Night. No investigations, no protection, no gun to shoot people. Your only powers are the ability to post, vote, and think. Help lynch Mafia during the Day, and you will win the game, along with the rest of the Town.
Rules:

1) Vote for someone like this:
vote: XX
or
unvote: XX
. Please note that unvotes are necessary.
2) Do not discuss this game outside this thread unless your role enables you to do so. (In a newbie game, this happens only at night.)
3) Executions will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, his pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. You may
vote: no lynch
– majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.
4) Once I have posted your death scene, you may make only 1 post, which cannot contain game-related content. (Example: Go town!)
5) Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts
6) Don’t quote any PMs from me.
7) Night actions may or may not have a deadline depending on activity. If I do issue one and if you (mafia/cop/doc) do not submit one by deadline, no choice will be made.
8) Have fun!
9) If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

Special notice:

I have severely limited access on weekends. Please be patient.

Random Voting
The only player who stands out as different is
Vote: Jack

He's only got one vowel in his name, while the rest of have 2 or more. Plus, all the letters in his name are in the first half of the alphabet...

OK, if we're doing Weird Letter-Based Voting, I'll

Vote: Haschel Cedricson

for having a name that's an anagram of Chinless Ochre Cad, since none of these qualities can possibly bode well for the town. "Ochre" in particular fills me with foreboding.

Wait, self-voting is an example of scummy behavior, yes?
Unvote: bovik, FOS: Jack[/b.] I'm not gonna vote yet because that would put us at lynch -1, but that's pretty suspicious.

Because then either your partner (assuming you are indeed mafia) or one of the two Mafioso out there (assuming you're not) could make the final vote, ending the day and giving us no additional information.

To create distance. Later in the game they could say "I CAN'T be Mafia, after all, I voted for Jack!"

Gah. This has become too wine-in-front-of-me for me.

1st vote count!

Jack: 2 (Jack, MissMoo)
bovik: 1 (Haschel)
Haschel: 1 (Ripley)
MissMoo: 1 (bovik)

Only votes in the correct format will be counted. I'm very particular about this to prevent confusion, especially near hammers.

No they couldn't say that. They wouldn't get believed.

Unless you can convincingly create distance it's always a bad idea to lynch your mafia partner.

I'm a little new to this as well, care to explain why lynch -1 on page one is a no no?

~~~
Spinal, whose join date is May 15, 2007 wrote:Cos I don't really know what I'm doing yet
Jack wrote:And you excuse is scummy.
I don't think it's scummy at all considering that this is very likely his first game. The newbie queue was moving fairly slowly for a few days there...
~~~

I'm not aligning myself with Spinal, I'm just saying. Don't let's jump on the new player [yet].

~~~
Oh, and even though my vote was a joke, I'm thinking I'll stick with it because maybe Jack claimed Mafia, hoping to be able to say at a more opportune time, "Why would I claim on page one, if I was? That's just stupid."
I think I can answer this, even though this is MY first game. If the day ended RIGHT NOW, what would we have learned? We would know that Jack voted for himself, my name is an anagram for "Chinless Ochre Cad", and that Spinal is new to this. And that's ALL we would know. We would be starting Day two pretty much exactly where we are now, only we'd be down a person (two people?) because of the Mafia.
You said yourself that your vote was a joke, and I think most of the others were too. By allowing the day to be so easily ended on the first page, it takes away our chances of learning anything once we start to get serious.
That's my take. Feel free to correct me, vets.
I can confirm that I am new and this is my 1st game. :D
Sorry for the vote Jack, nothing personal :)
When does the day end? When everyone has voted or after a set amount of time or at the mods discretion?
The day ends when we have reached a majority (today, with 9 players alive, that would be 4) for a lynch.
If the day drags on too long, the Mod will impose a deadline and will let us know what the policy will be (either taking the highest votes or us missing the lynch).
Haschel Cedricson has it pretty much exactly right. A short day is very bad for the town, and as soon as somebody reaches L-1, there's a danger of a misguided, mischievous or malevolent fourth and final vote.
In fact you'll often see a debate about whether it's scummy to place a
second
vote in the first couple of pages. Because that's L-2, and there are 2 scum, so they could quick lynch. I personally don't have much time for this argument; in practice scum, even newbie scum, never do this, and even if they did they'd be unlikely to talk their way out of being lynched in return.
Of course, this game is different, since the third vote went on a self-claimed scum. If a newbie added a quick fourth vote, they would, unusually, have a reasonable case for their action. ("He said he was scum, so..."). If you pull a stunt like this where brand new players are confronted with a non-standard situation in the first post of their first game, you can't really call them scummy for not knowing how to handle it.
So I agree: Spinal's "I don't really know what I'm doing yet" was a perfectly reasonable reaction to events. It's actually the second part of his reason for voting, "I'm easily led" that bothers me more. Pre-emptive abdication of responsibility...
Note: there are 7 players, not 9. Otherwise MissMoo's explanation is correct.
