You are a mysterious force, a deadly security system guarding the island.

You, along with
GreenLiquid
,
chamber
,
Pie_is_good
, and
tidus_of_zanarkand
have infiltrated the Survivors. At night you may speak with your fellow Others. Each night you will designate one of the Others to kill a target; that Other may not use any other nightabilities they might have. If you are not performing the nightkill, you may target a player and learn who else targeted them overnight. If you perform the nightkill, your victim will be mangled. You win when only Others are alive.

You went to Sydney to bring your estranged alcoholic father, Christian Shephard, from back home to LA. You felt guilty, since you were the one who turned him in for operating under the influence. Unfortunately, you arrived in Australia too late; you are returning on Oceanic Flight 815 with a corpse.

On the island, your valuable medical skills make you a de facto leader, though your unresolved daddy issues are a stress gradually wearing you away- you’ve even hallucinated seeing your father walking around. Each night you may target one other player to try to render medical aid to them. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

…at least, that’s what everyone else believes…

You went to Australia to convince your brother, Liam, to rejoin your famous band, Driveshaft. However, he now has a family and doesn’t want any part of the lifestyle you once shied away from. Ironically, he was once the one convincing you, with the result that you became a heroin addict. Liam, with a family now, offers his sympathy but wants no part of that life, leaving you to travel back alone on Oceanic Flight 815.

On the island, confronted with a dwindling supply of heroin, you must deal with withdrawal. You find a new purpose in life trying to protect the pregnant survivor, Claire. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

You are flying with your husband from Australia to the US on Oceanic Flight 815. During the flight your husband will go to the restroom at the rear of the airplane at an inopportune time.

On the island, even though you have no idea where your husband is, you possess great faith that he lives. Any vote you make will count twice. (This extra vote will *not* appear in votecounts, but it will still be counted by the mod.) You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

You are flying from Sydney to the US on Oceanic Flight 815 with your birth father, Michael Dawson, and your pet dog, Vincent. Your mother, Susan Lloyd, suddenly died; she split up with your father when you were an infant, moving to Australia and marrying her boss, Brian Porter, who adopted you. Following your mother’s death, Brian insisted that Michael retake custody of you, feeling there you’re “different somehow”.

He’s right…

In fact,
rajrhcpfreak

Special
. You seem to have powers of manifestation: when you visualize something, it mysteriously occurs. You chafe under your father’s overprotection; you do not know him well enough to understand his motives.

Knowing Michael prior to the flight, you may talk with
Fulle
at night. Because of
Fulle
’s overprotection, you cannot be targeted at night. Each night you create a manifestation to kill a player of your choice. You must choose a different manifestation each night. (Basically, a manifestation can be anything life-threatening from season 1 of the TV show. If you need help thinking of ideas, let me know, and I can give you a list. The idea is to be creative with kill methods :) ) You win when you are the only one alive.

Note:
Fulle
has an investigative ability; you will appear innocent to him.
Fulle
does not know that you have any abilities other than nighttalking. Nor does he know that you know about his investigative ability. Whether you tell him any of this is up to you.

You were in Sydney to participate in an Australian Outback adventure, but were rejected on account of your paraplegia and sent back to the US aboard Oceanic Flight 815, where you have a boring job as a regional collections supervisor for a box company. The tedium is broken by your enjoyment of games and adventure. If you were to be stranded on an island of mystery with plenty of survival equipment for an indefinite length of time- and with your paraplegia miraculously cured- well, you might not feel like leaving…

In fact,
XGreyjoyX
, you are a
Believer
. On the island, you have finally found your adventure. You have an almost mystical outlook which you wish to share- which you feel must be shared- with the rest of the survivors, sometimes against their will.

Each night you may challenge a player to a game. Send me the opponent and choose rock, paper, or scissors. (Please try to get these to me ASAP after nightfall, since I need to get a reply from your target during the night.)
If you win, your target becomes a Believer and retains any abilities they currently have.
If you tie, your target becomes a Believer and loses any abilities they currently have.
If you lose, nothing happens.

The island may demand a sacrifice. In addition to your normal nightchoice, you may designate a Believer as a sacrifice. That night, if you would be killed, the sacrifice will be killed instead. Only one sacrifice may be killed in your place over the course of the game.

You may talk with any Believer at night; however, the other Believers may not talk among each other. You win when everyone alive is a Believer. Anyone who becomes a Believer will gain this win condition and the ability to talk at night with you.

Note: Certain players cannot be recruited. If you win or tie against one of these, they will die instead.

You were in Sydney as an international fugitive from the law, having killed, robbed, and committed crimes so heinous that your own mother turned you in on her deathbed. Using numerous aliases and disguises you had fled to Australia, but were recognized and turned in by the farmer, Ray Mullen, who you found work with. The US Marshal Edward Mars, long on your trail, is escorting you back aboard Oceanic Flight 815 to face justice.

On the island, your desperation to avoid recapture has driven you to do *anything* to hide your criminal past and evade the law in the event of your rescue. You have hidden yourself behind lies and aliases, but if your identity somehow is revealed, you might not find yourself being trusted…

Each night you may target one player, living or dead, and look through their possessions for anything that might be of use. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

You were in Australia seeking a con artist named Frank Sawyer who, when you were a child, scammed your mother, causing your father to kill her and then himself. Ironically, you have become the very figure you despise, taking on the occupation, method, and even the name of the man you seek. After a moment of doubt spent commiserating in a bar with an alcoholic named Christian Shepherd, you killed a man in Australia who you thought was your nemesis, but it turns out you were set up. After getting in a bar fight with Warren Truss, an Australian minister, you were deported back to the US on Oceanic Flight 815.

On the island, you don’t care what others think of you. You have looted the wreckage, the corpses, and, provided you aren’t stopped, the living. If your identity somehow is revealed, you might not find yourself being trusted…

You were in Sydney on a vacation with your husband, Jin. However, he was actually on an assignment for your father, Mr. Paik. While you don’t know that your father is corrupt, you have noticed a significant change in your husband’s behavior. In fact, you planned to escape Jin. You secretly learned English, planning to walk out on him in Sydney airport, but a memory of the affection you once shared persuaded you to accompany him on to Los Angeles on Oceanic Flight 815. You’re not sure where your relationship stands right now.

On the island, your husband has tried to keep you isolated from the rest of the survivors, but you are slowly resisting his control. You have maintained the illusion that you can speak and understand English, but as tension grows among the Survivors, you may find yourself needing to communicate.

Knowing Jin prior to the flight, you may talk with olio at night. Being unable to speak or understand English, you and olio have a postrestriction. Neither of you may:
1) Indicate that you have a postrestriction.
2) Mention any details of your characters or roles.
3) Use more than 30 words per post.
4) Post more than 2 times per page (25 posts).
5) Refer in any way to the most recent post by anyone other than you, olio, or the mod.
6) Use any of the following numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. (or equivalents, eg: four, fourth, IV, 2+2)

The first time you or olio break a restriction, that player will lose their vote for the remainder of the day. (This will *not* be announced publicly or reflected in votecounts.) If olio breaks a restriction a second time,
olio
will die at the end of the day. However, if you break a restriction a second time, the mod will make a note inthread, and you and
olio
will both be protected from being voted for the remainder of that day and from being targeted on the following night. However, this might cause your relationship with your husband to change…

You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

Note:

You were in Sydney delivering contraband watches for your corrupt father-in-law, Mr. Paik; you planned on disappearing with your wife, Sun, after taking Oceanic Flight 815 to Los Angeles to make the final delivery. You are neither proud of your humble origins nor of your monstrous occupation, and especially not of the way your wife fears what you seem to have become. She is growing more independent from you. You’re not sure where your relationship stands right now.

On the island, you have become overprotective of your wife. Your inability to communicate with the rest of the survivors interferes towards your achieving your common goals, but you nevertheless want to help however you can.

Knowing Sun prior to the flight, you may talk with

You are 8 months pregnant; the father, Thomas, has abandoned you earlier in the pregnancy. Richard Malkin, an alleged psychic, has insistently warned you of danger if you do not raise your child. When you became reluctant, he found a specific family in LA as an alternate plan; he insisted that you fly there immediately on Oceanic Flight 815.

On the island, you begin to reconsider the psychic’s motives and advice, and wonder just what danger your unborn child represents- especially since others seem interested in him.

You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

You went to Sydney to rescue your step-sister, Shannon Rutherford, from a seemingly abusive relationship; tragically, she was attempting to unsuccessfully con you, as her step-mother has cut her out of her father’s inheritance. Commiserating drunkenly before your departure back to the US on Oceanic Flight 815, you and your step-sister slept together. You’re not sure where your relationship stands right now.

On the island, you are eager to help, even risking your own life to aid the rescue attempt, even though you don’t necessarily have the authority the other survivors command. Your relationship with your step-sister seems to be steadily deteriorating, and the day will soon come when you must choose between prioritizing her or prioritizing the rescue attempt.

Knowing Shannon prior to the flight, you may talk with
BabyJesus
at night. Also, you were once trained as a lifeguard, so each night you may target another player to try to administer emergency medical aid to them. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

Note:
BabyJesus

You were in Sydney with your boyfriend to con your step-brother, Boone Carlyle; your step-mother has cut you out of her father’s inheritance. The con was unsuccessful, in that your boyfriend grabbed the cash, spilled the trick to Boone, and ran. Commiserating drunkenly before your departure back to the US on Oceanic Flight 815, you and your step-brother slept together. You’re not sure where your relationship stands right now.

On the island, you are content to sit back and let others work on survival and rescue attempts. Your brother keeps trying to push you to contribute; you know he’s just trying to work through his own issues. You don’t need to work; you can get others to do things for you.

Knowing Boone prior to the flight, you may talk with
Paranoid
at night. Also, you still have some skill at manipulation. Each night you may target a player to try to charm them, so that they are prevented from doing whatever action they were planning on doing. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

You were in Sydney infiltrating a terrorist cell for the CIA, in exchange for the location of your lost childhood sweetheart, Nadia, whose escape you faked in the Gulf War. During the mission, your former college roommate, Essam trusted you, but when he learned of your deception, he killed himself. Out of guilt you have claimed the body to take back to the US on Oceanic Flight 815 for a proper Muslim burial.

On the island, your have make use of your prior service as a communications and intelligence officer in the Iraqi Republican Guard, during which you “got the enemy to communicate”. You feel guilty about how you have used these skills in the past, but necessity may make you need to use them again…

Once per night, you may choose a player to torture. By torturing a player you will be given their alignment. A tortured player cannot perform any nightaction. What you then do with your helpless target is totally up to you…

You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

(Please try to get your nightchoice to me ASAP, so that I get your result back to you in time for you to make a final decision.)

You were in Australia investigating a curse which seems to have befallen you. You won the lottery playing a string of numbers which a former psychiatric inmate, Leonard, kept repeating: 4 8 15 16 23 42. Unfortunately, a torrent of bad luck followed your winning. Believing yourself to be cursed, you have tracked the numbers back to a naval officer, Sam Toomey; unfortunately, you learn from his widow that the numbers drove him to suicide. You are now heading back to the US on Oceanic Flight 815 for your mother’s birthday.

On the island, your friendly, laidback demeanor lets you talk to players without arousing suspicion. Moreover, you have acquired a copy of the flight manifest for Oceanic Flight 815, allowing you to doublecheck identities.

Once per night you may investigate whether a player is on the flight manifest. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

You went to Sydney to regain custody of your 10 year old son, Walt Lloyd, after the sudden death of Susan Lloyd, his mother and your ex-wife, who had chosen an ambitious career across the globe. So, despite your desire to be a father, circumstances never allowed you to be with your son. Necessity also forced you to abandon your dreams of being an artist in favor of more reliable construction work. Your son barely knows you, but you hope to begin a new life together when you reach the US on Oceanic Flight 815

On the island, you are still trying to get to know your son, though he doesn’t know you, and hasn’t yet fully accepted your presence in his life. You are protective- perhaps overprotective- of your son.

Knowing Walt prior to the flight, you may talk with
rajrhcpfreak

(Obviously Walt has his own best interests at heart, and you consider yourself to have Walt’s interests at heart as well.) You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

Note: Walt only just met you before the flight, and hasn’t yet built up trust.

On the island, you realize that you have been shunted aside despite your knowledge; still, you possess a few usual skills that the survivors may be interested in. For example, you know how dangerous dynamite can be. When a supply has been found in the beached ship “Black Rock”, you volunteer yourself to try to use this dangerous tool as safely as possible.

If you are ever nightkilled, everyone who targeted you that night will also die. However, the instability of the dynamite means that you only need 1/3 of the town to vote you to be lynched instead of the usual 1/2. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

She was traveling to LA on Oceanic Flight 815 while 9 months pregnant, so that she could deliver you to adoptive parents personally selected by the psychic. While on the island, Claire gives birth.

You may not participate in this game until your birth, which will happen at the Dawn of Day 3. You win when all threats to the Survivors have been eliminated.

General Theme

The idea behind this game is not merely to adapt the characters of Lost, but the theme itself: there are mysteries about the island, yet just as great mysteries about the characters. The secrets, some unknown even to the relevant players, reflect both this general theme as well as flavor of specific characters. The idea is to give a sense of “what next?” while keeping a hidden logic. These mysteries should be surprising yet solvable. Character name and alignment are revealed on death, but not abilities or role details.

Modnotes

Roleblocking the assigner of the Otherkill (ie: the Monster) does not prevent the Otherkill; the specific player assigned to the kill must be roleblocked in order to stop it.

Jack is told he is a doctor but is actually a Nurse until Christian’s death, at which point he becomes a doctor and is told such. He still submits nightchoices until that point.

Rose’s doublevote does not appear in votecounts. If deadline is hit, Rose and Lloyd’s abilities are disregarded in deadline procedure.

Anything targeting Scott instead targets Steve, and vice versa. Votes cast for Scott count toward Steve instead. However, Steve and Scott are not redirect (they know who they are) and the Others are not redirected (they know their companion). When one dies, the other is targeted normally, except for the thieves (who may legally target dead players).

The Others are unrecruitable by the Believers, and are killed instead if they would be recruited. If a sacrifice is made, that night’s recruitment fails.

If Walt is unfamiliar with the show, they may be provided with a list of sample kill methods.

If Kate or Sawyer gain abilities, they may use them in addition to the basic thief ability.

Sun and Jin’s postrestriction was modified because quoted material was not originally accounted for. It was revised to the following:
If Sun breaks the postrestriction, she and Jin can no longer nighttalk.

If Claire would be nightkilled before Aaron is born, she instead vanished for 24 hours. Aaron will be born with the alignment of her nightkiller. If Claire is doublekilled or lynched, Aaron is not born. Claire is informed when Aaron is born.

Shannon’s and Boone’s abilities do not work, though they still submit nightchoices. If either dies, the other gains a mandatory 1-shot vigilante ability.

Sayid’s roleblocking ability is mandatory. The vigilante ability is optional. If Sayid kills (with his ability or by voting for the lynch of) an innocent, he cannot post, vote, or use nightactions. He may past after 1 day, vote after 2 days, but loses his nightactions permenantly. The initial disappearance is marked inthread. The loss of vote does not appear in votecounts.

Arzt’s ability is mandatory, and cannot be prevented by roleblock. If it triggers when Walt is targeting him, Michael is killed instead if they are still paired.

The Pilot dies from a shrapnel wound at the end of Night 4 unless they receive medical attention. Any doctor can cure them completely. Being targeted by Jack (when Nurse) or Boone extends their lifespan by 1 day.

Roleblocking priorities

If roleblocking abilities conflict, they are resolved as follows:
The Marshal (highest)
Rousseau
Sayid (lowest)
Kate (if gains a roleblocking ability)
Sawyer (if gains a roleblocking ability)

Investigative results

Hurley receives a guilty result on Others, Thieves, Rousseau, Christian, Drug Smuggling Nigerian Priest, and Aaron.
Michael receives a guilty result on Believers, Thieves.
Sayid receives a guilty result on Others, Believers, Special, Thieves.

Jin and Sun receive no result on all investigations. (If Sun breaks her postrestriction, she investigates as normal.)
Kate and Sawyer (ie: Thieves) receive a guilty result on all investigations (their aliases aren’t on the manifest, Michael and Sayid don’t trust them). They can steal a passport from Joanna, which causes them to investigate as innocent; however, Joanna will then investigate as guilty.

Thief results

Moderrors
Jin/Sun’s postrestriction: I hadn’t considered quoted material, and foolishly initially gave them carte blanche. I gave them an additional violation in exchange for renegotiating the restriction to something more restrictive. In retrospect I should have also made it clearer that they should have treated the revised restriction as if it were in place all along.

Kate’s death: rajrhcpfreak had submitted falling off a cliff and some other target, and later changed his nightchoice to having Y drown. I forgot to note the changed killmethod. Didn’t affect the game.

Aaron birth announcement: I forgot to send this PM to zu_Faul, and only remembered midday 4. Big oops.

Aaron’s player: I should definitely have been assigned the first slot on the replacement list from the beginning, because of the logic nearly used to exonerate Bogre the penultimate day. I hadn’t wanted to force a player to follow the game for 3 days in the slight chance of Aaron not entering the game, but given the alternative of a potential confirmed innocent, I most definitely should have.

Scott/Steve: Originally the redirection was only one-directional; this was changed at the last minute in setup review so as not to give the Others an effective extra life. However, I failed to reevaluate the balance afterwards, for I had been calculating Scott as an advantage, whereas with bi-redirection, his ability was actually more of a disadvantage, and since he was ignorant of the condition, it was even more inexcusable. I ad hoc did what I felt I could to try to preserve an advantage for that role (making the Others’ votes and actions not redirect onto their comrade). In this instance I acted without the approval of my comod, for what it’s worth. I’d like to offer to tidus_of_zanarkard: that he not count this game as a loss.

Kate/Sawyer precedence: This is a minor perfectionistic flavor detail, but Sawyer should have had higher priority than Kate, reflecting that Sawyer was better than Kate at stealing from the rest of the town, but Kate was better at stealing from Sawyer.

As already mentioned, I let day continue D2 when themanhimself had already been lynched.

The N6 question about people logged on at 1pm on 6/26: I somehow managed to crosspost prods and replacement requests. I PMed the requests and posted prods to the replacement queue. The problem was that the posts revealed that Walt and Michael had nightchoices. I immediately deleted them, but had wanted to ensure that no player saw them accidentally.

My Internet connection has been kind of blippy lately, which is what I’m blaming the fact that I messed up the locking the thread, ruining my perfectionistic desire to cleanly demarcate the “Pilot” game information from the postgame analysis of “All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues”.

I also have some more subjective modcommentary that I had been taking notes on during the game, but I don't have time to edit it up right now- I'll try to get it up ASAP. In the meantime: I'd love any feedback!

(I’ll also shamelessly self-promote the next game I’m moderating: “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Scum”, a minitheme currently taking signups.)

EmpTyger, this game was awesome, nd the roles made up for slight modding mistakes which you've already pointed out. This is one of the few times I've enjoyed being mafia, as well as one of the few times I've followed a game after dying.

I ought to offer a hand to all of my predecessors. Without you, I couldn't make jokes about Paracherdosskmars. (Actually Iammars played decently; without him I couldn't really confirm myself.)

Lloyd apparently lied about his role, but given his role I think it's a necessary play.

As for an MVP, I'd consider a four way tie between me, FA, Lloyd, and raj.

While I understand the motivation for allowing raj to select his kill type, I'm not sure I like that mechanic (it hurts a flavor whore like me, and I'm not sure it's something that's fair for town to puzzle out. I also have bad flash backs to the Five-Year Invitational, where I was hurt by essentially the same mechanic.) I'd strongly consider restricting raj to kill types that are disjoint from the Others/Believers. But that's my opinion. It may be worth having a separate thread for discussing that.

Given that I jumped into the game on day 4 having never seen an episode of Lost, it was quite enjoyable.
I replaced into Chess Mafia for 6 months, and all I got was a win and this lousy sig.

Strategically lying as a townie provided a mafia-like thrill! :) I was overjoyed when I lived long enough to use my Day 1 breadcrumbs, and the benefit that Arzt means Doctor in the German language, and without a counterclaim. Hopefully, my lie effectively helped the Survivors to a win as well.

- EmpTyger and Blackberry, thank you for modding, as I enjoyed this game.

- Thok, Frozen Atlantic, dahen, rajrhcpfreak, and Bogre,

After 99% exonerating Bogre as an Sk after noticing the replacement mechanics, I wanted to lynch rajrhcpfreak the most. Apparently, that specific argument for Not voting for Bogre wasn't persuasive enough, as it may have been lost in midst my other posts.

After rajrhcpfreak survived the lynch, I had concerns that rajrhcpfreak was an un-nightkillable Sk (in hindsight, it turned out that he was unnightkillable as long as dahen was alive), and I may die in vain.

It worked out in the end in the Survivors favor, because my death took out dahen.

Given the opportunity to lie and help the town, I seized it with delight.

Yeup. But you were worried about how many Others were in play, and the town was worried about a cult (I hate it when the Cult Leader dies N1).

There should have been no concern about a cult, seriously. If it was a cult (which it ended up being) the character who, flavorwise, would be the leader, had died, meaning there was no recruit. There was even hinting in the death post that he was the leader. I didn't bring that up because I was hoping that maybe concern of a cult would turn attention away from myself because my plan was to not kill for the remainder of the game.

Seriously, I need to be an SK. I've been an SK once before, and everyone was an SK in that game. Well, that's incorrect in two ways: there were two mafia members in that game, and I've been an SK before, but I died Night 1.

My point being, I work far better alone, worrying about none other than myself. In SSBM Mafia, I nearly won because I threw my godfather under the bus Night 1. I won't hesitate to get rid of my own mafia members if I think it will hurt me more than help me, and usually it would hurt me, but often it helps me, especially when I have my own ability.

raj, if we had an inkling of eachother roles and gameplay style, we could have worked out getting much further with eachother's help :P

Most of my concerns about a cult (and I was clearly the person most concerned with it) were based off of FA's posting style/choice of arguments/choice of bandwagons. A typical day after I replaced was FA going "We should lynch X for crappy reason", me going "That's a really crappy reason to lynch X, I don't really buy it and Y is a better lynch" and the rest of town going "Lynch X! Lynch X!" which lead to X being lynch as a townie.

I mean Y wasn't always a better lynch (I should have supported a Pie lynch in retrospect, as I placed too much faith on the night kills, and the whole Bogre/Zu Faul thing was tragic in retrospect), but I did catch on to raj before anybody else.
I replaced into Chess Mafia for 6 months, and all I got was a win and this lousy sig.

I probably would have been on the Pie wagon
rolandofthewhite (5:40:28 PM): It would be weird living with Thesp. All the hookers murdered and skin lying around. :(

zu_Faul NOT being scum was the surprise of the game.
Sucking at Mafia does not make you a townie.

Man, I totally got my ass kicked. Good job town. I'd have to say it was eventually a good thing for the town I died, because I would have been in way over my head with the setup at the end. Even though I sucked, I guess I still technically win :P

I admit I read too much into what I've seen of lost and flavor for thinking you might kill to protect me.

I was really sad when I learned that I'd been killed on N2 - great game!

Bleh, being Ethan for the lose. And I confirmed Bogre's ability (as non-flavor) but no one listened to me! :-/
I'm suspicious - in every sense of the word.

Yamahako,

I did listen to you. See above quote.

During the game, I pointed out that you had no power at all, to support the notion that Bogre might not have any powers either.
