I should play Civ again but it honestly didn't feel super interesting. I know it's amazingly deep, but vs AI it really isn't because diplomacy doesn't exist. And I'm not playing a 4 hour game online. Fuck no.

It's a step away from gritty realistic which the industry needs.
I don't think abstraction in the art style is a bad thing for a strategy game. I think in something like Starcraft or Company of Heroes where what you're seeing is a direct representation of the boots on the ground. Civ, to me, has always been a little more presentational. More akin to a board game with several degrees of abstraction.
I like the art style, I don't want it to feel more real and gritty.
