It wasn't "too early" in a time sense, it was "too early" in regard towards conversations with you.

Because it's an anonymous game, nobody knows how you in particular will offer alliances. From the perspective of the players you were offering them to all they saw was a person who was basically offering alliances with nothing to back it up, they couldn't trust you to keep them.

I don't think it should be a requirement, but I definitely think it should be highly encouraged for new players to spectate a game first, or at least read a previous game or two. I'm not sure where the best place to do that would be though.
