Board Games!

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

I knew it as mafia (and hadnt heard of werewolf) before coming here. That was 11 years ago though, and people are way more into boardgames now.

Well I wasn't saying that it would be impossible to hear of the game by that name before this website existed. However, this is pretty much the biggest forum dedicated to it and it's rare to find anyone who knows of it who has never been here or to epicmafia.

Also people are getting more into boardgames and more games are being made, which is pretty cool. I heard someone in a video recently say that we are in a "golden age of board games" which I think might be true.

I'm choosing to interpret this literally.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

So, I need more quick, drop in drop out type games to play at parties.

Cards Against Humanity is sort of what I mean, though it's a pretty boring game. Something that can handle a ton of players and people can come and go as they please, or it has a short runtime.

Snake Oil and Mad Scientist University are both easy to jump in and out of, and similar playstyle to CaH, in each round everybody has to submit an idea that they think will be the best. The themes are different and both games involve more talking than CaH - in Snake Oil you're a salesman trying to pitch your product to the buyer, in Mad Scientist you're displaying your wacky invention to the conference.

Also we've enjoyed a lot of One Night Werewolf recently, which isn't really the same, but it is really quick at about 5 - 10 minutes per game.

"We Didn't Playtest This at All" and any of it's expansions
Some of the flavorful Fluxx's
Potentially "Epic Spell Wars" - played this drunk a couple times don't think it got finished but was fun regardless

Have you considered Escape: The Curse of the Temple?

The game can only ever last a maximum of 10 minutes, and it's insanely fun.

on the same vein as cards against humanity:

Snake oil - I enjoy this one much more. Although both (CAH and Snake oil) are best off in small doses. I had the unfortunate case where we played CAH for like 4 hours at going away party last week so I feel your pain.
Telestrations is another good one.

My favorite game for lots of people at a party (that works with gamers and non-gamers alike) is resistance, but its not short enough that people can drop in and out at will.

Martian Dice
is pretty simple quick filler fun, there's no limit to players, and if somebody drops out the game can easily continue.

In the same vein is
Dragon Slayer

Simple dice games with no real loss if somebody cuts tail and runs.

Penguin swears by
The Great Dalmudi
as well.

I'll second great dalmutti, although there is no real 'end of the game' and I find people drop out pretty fast if they don't like it.

I'd strongly recommend
Snake Oil
or
Coup
with
Reformation
expansion.

I own roborally, its a great game (although I have the new version and not the superior older version with better boards, friend does though) would play if you are going to try again.
Mostly retired. Unless you ask or it's something interesting.

Yeah I think this is just an unfortunate symptom of coming from a mafia site.

For something slightly different for a jump-in, jump-out game, perhaps
Ricochet Robots
might work. Very clever competitive puzzle game.

Finally played
Castles of Burgundy
this evening and really, really enjoyed it. Fun, dynamic action selection, no risk of getting bored during opponents' turns, a dose of luck in its dice mechanic that keeps it from being too dry without ever risking a complete screw-over of your plans (that's just the other players). Can't believe it took me this long to try it.

The other new thing that I tried was
Loony Quest
, which is just coming out with an English rulebook (the only part of the game that needs langauge). You have to draw a path on dry-wipe sheets to get you through various mazes put in the middle of the table, on a short timer, while trying to pick up power-ups and avoid penalties. You might end up drawing with one eye closed, or without bending your elbows, all while attempting ever more complicated video-game style levels. It's quick, different and a lot of fun. Strongly recommend giving it a go.

If you like Castles, try
Bora Bora
. I like Bora Bora more in virtually every way, and I really like castles. Same designer.

Also I want another opinion from a Castles fan, I have one person who likes Castles but dislikes Bora Bora, and one who dislikes Castles and likes Bora Bora.

I've just seen BSG being played and by god it seems like a really awesome game...reminiscent to Shadows over Camelot.

I enjoy the traitor mechanic (and well.... the rest of the gameplay) way more in Battlestar Galactica.

Shadows of Camelot is

a) More Approachable (its pretty obvious what good moves are, whereas battlestar having knowledge of the decks is a pretty huge advantage)
B) Has a different theme- some people like King arthur a lot more than battlestar galactica

For me though, I find BSG much better
