Are they good? They better be good.
They've been one of my favorite bands for about 10 years so I'm pretty biased in favor of them.
My suggested listening order:
1. Boxer ("Fake Empire," "Green Gloves," "Apartment Story," "Start a War," "Racing Like a Pro") - this album is responsible for most of their classics and is very accessible on top of being some of the band's best poetic songwriting. it's basically what arcade fire wishes they were with all their forced postmodern bullshit
2. Trouble Will Find Me ("I Should Live in Salt," "Pink Rabbits," "This Is the Last Time," "Humiliation") - their newest record is probably tied with Boxer as far as being very cohesive and interesting on a first listen, lots of self-deprecation and regret about relationships with both family and lovers as well as drug addiction. Annie Clarke from St. Vincent guest stars on a song, but I won't spoil it for you.
3. High Violet ("Bloodbuzz Ohio," "Conversation 16," "Terrible Love," "Afraid of Everyone") - lots of paranoia and depression, some political commentary, zombies, and a lot of beautiful poetry. I kinda killed this album for myself by overplaying the FUCK out of it the summer it came out, but it really is fantastic.
4. Alligator ("Karen," "Abel," "Mr November," "Lit Up," "All the Wine," "Baby We'll Be Fine") - I pretty much love every song on this record, and it's been one of my favorite albums since it came out. Karen is at the same time hilarious and touching, Lit Up, Mr. November, and All the Wine are basically booze-soaked anthems of youth and lost innocence, then you get some really good takes on the typical National fare of failed relationships, disappointing your family, insanity, etc.
5. Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers ("Cardinal Song," "Lucky You," "Slipping Husband," "90-Mile Water Wall") - sad songs is titled appropriately. If you've ever been in a long-term relationship that ended on really shitty terms there's probably stuff here that hits pretty close to home - especially if it was your fault. This was kind of a dark horse album for me and it, along with Alligator isn't super accessible at first but the poignant lyrics and subject matter and the really emotive way the record is put together can really make some of those songs stick in your brain.
6. The National ("Theory of the Crows," "Bitters & Absolut," "American Mary") - I think this is their least cohesive album, and the only one with songs that I tend to skip. But the good stuff is really good. Theory of the Crows and American Mary are among their best songs, and I have shed manly tears listening to Bitters & Absolut.
They have some great EP/Single/B-side stuff too - check out "About Today," "Driver, Surprise Me," 'Wake Up Your Saints," "Santa Clara," and "Exile Vilify"-

Run the Jewels and Despot murdered it last night. Despot came out and did Tougher Colder Killer with them and it was glorious. They came out and started the show with a We Are the Champions singalong and the encore was Love Again, which was the first time they've ever performed it, and Angel Dust.-
