Space above where the melon grows can't be blocked (no idea why). Putting the pistons under the dirt where the melon will grow will harvest them and keep the stalks intact.
They need to be sticky pistons.
The other way you could this is a line of regular pistons facing the grow space.
xyz
Where x is the stalk, y is the melon, and z is the piston facing y. If you don't have slime balls, that's the way I'd think to do it. You'd need to increase the width by at least... 5 in the center. 2 spaces for each line of pistons, 2 spaces for each line of repeaters, and one space for the redstone down the middle. There's probably a more efficient design though - I'm a caveman at redstone.
I think I made like 3 compasses to try and get a map that would have both mine, ETL's, Osota/Eek's, Aronis'. I wanted to get the spawntown stuff over at the extreme hills but I think that deserves a map of it's own.
Can see a couple of islands Aronis could expand too, that nice river there. There's also that path I cut out in the forest to ETL's place, and you can see Osota/Eek's peeking in from the top.
In one of the recent snapshots -- mid June, I think.
They have two new mobs: guardians and Elder guardians -- the elder guardians don't respawn, but there are so many temples this is not really an issue. The temples are made of "prismarine" blocks, which you can farm also from the guardian mobs.
The elder guardian cause the "mining fatigue" debuff, so it is hard to loot the temple before they are dead. Also, everything is underwater, so better to have some depth strider enchantments and darkvision potions ready.
UT ruining my fun. Reck: I prettified the Nether path because I'm a decent person, I'm slightly OCD, and I wanted enough room to ride the horse I procured from your area. Thanks to Osota for the Saddle / Armor. If anybody sees a dark brown horse with Diamond Armor by spawn it's mine; I think they log out with you if you do it while riding them.
That was a pretty neat video. I didn't start playing until basically 1.4.7 but I do remember a free download you could get that I messed with. Probably a demo of some sort but all you could really do with it was build. No survival or mobs or anything (I don't think anyway. That was a while ago I messed with that).
My Uncle always use'ta say, 'You can't get no blood from a turnip.' .... He'd say the same thing about gettin' it from a stone, too.

I never said nothin' back to him. You don't want mess with no freak that's searchin' around that hard for blood.
Been thinking about an idea that came to me tonight. I wanted to see how everyone felt before I did anything. I was thinking about constructing a huge PVP Castle, maybe it can be a castle in the sky. Anyhow it would be a game area that we could jump on as a group and "FIGHT TO THE DEATH". I have never done PVP in Minecraft before, but I though the project might be interesting. Oh course if no one thinks the idea is a good one then that is ok i'll come up with something else to build. Let me know what you think.

I'd be down for this.
Btw Oso, I started harvesting the gravel deposit, and it looks hella ugly now lol. If you need help cleaning it up a bit, just let me know, I'll help you out
For this castle I am planning on adding traps, secret passages, and even a small area that goes into the nether. There will be a spawn room from a netherportal as the starting point and two sleeping chambers for quick respawning after death. Also since flags were added we could maybe even do a capture the flag type game as well.

Unless someone has an objection to it, I'd say leave it for the moment. Now that the farm part of that area is mostly done, I'm starting to plan the rest (tree frams/animals pens, ect.) which is likely to mean some major transforming. I'd hate to see anyone spend hours of work to pretty it up just to have me come back and dig up all that work. I might just go ahead and replaced any exposed stone blocks that got exposed during the mining with dirt. But that itself would likely be temporary as well.
[Add-on Edit]
Actually, just popped on and looked at and it is pretty bad. BUT, a hole that deep and that big has...possibilities. Let me think on this some. I was going to use the mine as a location for a Random spawn mob spawner, this may be a good beginning to that as well. Plus, I was going to put the Giant Mushrooms above ground so I wouldn't have to dig a chamber big enough to grow them. You've already done about 90% of the work on a decent sized chamber so, that could work too.

I thought about digging some gravel because I needed flint at the time, but ended up going out to build a starter home. Still need the flint, and haven't found any large gravel deposits in the wilderness -- figures...
The hole is pretty impressive, I've never taken the trouble to remove that big a cube before. It definitely has possibilities.
