An ever evolving brew:

  • Nights will last around 72 hours or so. If night choices come in earlier, it will dawn earlier.
  • Days will last as long as they need to. If discussion lags, I will impose two deadlines. The first may be rescinded or extended. The second will be final and binding.
  • Votes must be in
    bold
. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted.
  • Unvoting has been made redundant. Just make sure your votes are bold.
  • Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, his pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded.
  • You may
    vote: no lynch
    – majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death. Once a player votes no lynch, it will be taken that he has gone home and may not post again that day unless he gets half a majority of votes required to lynch him.
  • At deadline, half majority or more will constitute a lynch. First come, first served. Less than half majority = no lynch. Endgame (6 players or less) will require fully majority regardless of deadline.
  • The game is not to be discussed outside of the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so.
  • Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. Stop typing.
  • Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts
  • Don’t quote any messages from me. You are liable to get mod-killed if you do.
  • If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you – if you do not submit a choice to me I will make a choice for you, the first time - which might result you being quite unhappy. From the second instance onwards, it will be forfeit.
  • If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
  • I should post a vote count, ever so often, maybe every page or every alternate one. Please feel free to request one should you deem it necessary.
  • If you have any questions, you can pm me or ask in the thread. I'll get back to you as soon as possible, and with the best explanation that I can. You can also pm me if you want to tell someone about your day, or you thought something another player wrote was funny, or just to say hi. :D
  • I am always right, but not always accurate. If I've made a mistake, please tell my by email as soon as possible. If you try to notify me in thread, I'll have to to edit your post and you will most likely be mod-killed.
  • Most importantly...this is a game and we're here to have fun. Do your part.

*clip clop clip clop*

The horses’ hooves trot merrily down the shaded road along the river as you make your way towards Lupieri. There is a gentle breeze that caresses the water, causing it to ripple as you gaze around and take in the paradoxically vibrant hues of autumn as Nature throws off the last vestiges of summer and prepares to de-robe Herself for the coming winter, when she should be covering herself in all sorts of layers; but no one has claimed to be able to read Her mind and probably, no one ever will.

For the time being, the weather is mild and the countryside pleasant, the coach moves along steadily as the harness bells tinkle in rhythm to the clip clop of the horses’ hooves.

Finally, as the sun begins to dip nearer to the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange to match the foliage around you, you see the milestone which indicates the arrival of Lupieri. It is as if that boundary stone heralds the character of the village you are about to enter and there is a slight sense of foreboding as you pass into the village’s boundaries.
Your coach driver, on whose face you’d seen the merest flicker at the mention of Lupieri, when asking for a fare, a taciturn man apparently, seems to become even more rigid as the fork towards the village green appears. He halts long enough for you to get off, tosses down your luggage after you and gives his reins a twitch, the horses taking off eagerly, even as they waited whickering softly and shying away from the fork, towards the open highway. He does not even wait to collect his fare, rare behaviour in a coach driver.

Slightly puzzled, you make your way up the fork towards the village green. The shade of the trees along the road is still enough to cast a dappled shadow along your path, enough to make your eyes see things that might not be there and your mind play tricks on you.
You are not too much of a timid person but even then the atmosphere makes you a little jumpy.

As you walk away from the river, towards the green, you notice a flock of goats being driven by a young boy of about 11, going home after their daily grazing. While most children skip, whistle and sing when tending their flocks, this one seems unusually quiet. He seems to be on the lookout for something. Naturally, part of his job is to keep wolves from running off with the livestock but then one doesn’t find wolves this close to human habitation. What could it be?

You pass a group of wagons on the outskirt of the village and for some time you walk on with only the rustling of the leaves for company, until you reach the village green, a big circular clearing in the center of the village with roads leading off in various directions.

It seems to have the regular amenities any village might offer. The dispensary, the courthouse, the merchants and craftsmen have their shops and the mansion of the local squire can be seen some distance away to your right. A magnificent mansion but one which seems to radiate a steel-edged pride in its sheer, precise beauty.

It seems to be like any other sort of village but the deep sense of unease which took you at the milestone still haunts you and what’s more, the unnatural silence of the villagers adds to the sinister feeling. At sundown, when everyone returns from their daily work, there is generally a bustle about the place as neighbours and acquaintances greet each other, on their way home and to dinner. There might be the odd impromptu invitation to join someone, for that special pot roast that they like or perhaps the men loiter around the inn while their wives finish cooking.

However, as you approach the inn, you notice none of this. Instead, you see more quiet people, casting furtive glances into the shadows, people who, if at all they stop, hold hurried whispered conversations and then move away as quickly as possible as if some spectre looms over their shoulders.

The inn-keeper seems surprised at the opportunity of some custom, almost ill-pleased but being the business-like person she is, she conceals her surprise quickly. Almost.

You notice that the inn is empty except for you and you are given accommodation right away, with the inn-keeper’s husband carrying away your luggage to your room. You make inquiries about dinner and also about Lupieri itself.
You are told that rabbit stew, bread, local cheese, wine and some fruit are one the menu tonight but she seems strangely reluctant to engage in conversation – uncharacteristic in an inn-keeper.

You have come to this place for a change of scene, a change of vocation. You hope to get a job with the Lovato family, away in the mansion. You have certain skills which they might find useful, as news on the air suggests.
However, you can’t quite help but wonder why this place seems just a little unreal to you, as you go up to your room and to bed.

Perhaps it is just your imagination. Perhaps it is the long journey which has tired you and it is nothing but your fancy. Perhaps you will wake up tomorrow, feeling refreshed and knowing that you can laugh at yourself for your vague fancies. Perhaps.

Some distance away, a mournful rooster crows feebly and you rise with a start. Your head is buzzing due to a lack of sleep and your eyes feel leaden but your eyelids seem starched open.

You've been waiting tremulously, for some sign of life. Wondering whether you will get up at all on this new day. The fact is, you never went off to sleep but waited, nervously, wondering when the shadows would fall across your door and wondering what nature of evil was stalking the town of Lupieri.

For as you went up to sleep, some manner of insects, possibly some cousin of the gnats and midges was keeping you awake. The annoying bites continued until you were too drowsy to care or notice; but just as you were about to nod off and visit oblivion, you heard the most blood-curdling noise, you'd ever heard. Halfway between a howl and human screaming, it was a mixture of anguish and hatred that you feel even now, with the sun up but your world suddenly seems pale and lifeless.

The howling snapped you right out of your stupor and it was followed by human screams, returned almost to their primieval state and a series of growls and snarls.

The feral cacophony of sounds seemed to go on forever and you understood somewhat, the fear gripping this particular town, being put right in its midst, in a manner of speaking.

However, as you hear the crowing now, you thank your lucky stars and pray to a Power you have not invoked in many a year, praising Grace and resolving never to stray from the right path again. You abandon your aims of finding work at the manor and decide to leave right away. You think that it's a mercy that you did not unpack in the evening and determined to leave, whether there is a coach available so early in the morning or not, you don't even bother washing off the grime of the night and start on your way.

As you settle your bill and start briskly out of the village, you notice the populace of Lupieri making its way to the village green. Many vacant faces stare at you, through you, and once again you thank your stars that Providence seems to have spared you and while you pity the villagers of Lupieri, you're glad that you don't have to be around to solve their problem.

Bringing it on new page.

As SV has posted, she is with LA.
I do not see a necessity for replacement at this time.
If you disagree, please PM me with your reasons.

You will not be left in doubt when a deadline is in effect. Imminent implies an impending arrival.

Deadline mechanic? Read the rules.

The recent increased pace of posting might buy you more time but don't count on it.

Usually, there will be two deadlines. The first one might be retracted/extended.
The second one will be final and non negotiable.

And:

Please list your picks for machine gun prods.

Things have finally come to a head in Lupieri and the local populace has decided to take matters into its own hands. No long arm of the law will reach the supernatural villains plaguing the people here.
A council of the surviving villagers is set up to decide what needs to be done about the problem at hand.
Suspicions are thrown around. No one is spared. Not the old residents of the village and certainly not the newer ones.

Discussion goes on for a long while until it is decided that the behaviour of
OverTheUnder
is sufficiently suspicious enough to put him under scrutiny. However, the more he is put under pressure, the quieter he gets. It's almost as if he's under a spell and refuses to say anything until finally, he disappears altogether.

OverTheUnder
was a
Retired Cop
, newly moved to the village and a natural target for suspicion. It is with a bittersweet feeling that the villagers retire to another restless night, having put up notices about the banishment of
OverTheUnder
after his disappearance, all over the village.

If anyone happens to have a cached copy of the night scene, I'd appreciate it if they sent it my way.

Hunting for one myself. Or will have to rewrite :(

The villagers returned to their homes, after a long day of discussion. The banishment of
OverTheUnder
had been taxing on all the people and as soon as the people got home, they shut their doors, some even boarding them up. Most sane people did this.

There are always those, however, who are not quite completely sane, and who have business which is entirely their own.
al4xz
was one of those people and he was out and about in the evening. He knew the risks of what he was doing and the risk was what made him do it. A shiver of excitement ran along his spine as he crossed the village green, on his way to the river. He hoped for a rendezvous there, and if that didn't happen, he could always help himself.

As
al4xz
lay down on the soft grass under the willows which grew along the river bank, another one of those people was flitting about in the shadows. Presently, they went up to
al4xz
and put their hands around his neck.
al4xz
smiled a little, until the hands choked further.
"Uncle." said
al4xz

He was replied by silence.
"Uncle!" he said, a little more urgently.
More silence.
"UNCLE!" was his last word.
Followed by more silence.
Broken only by the noises made by the river as it flows past.
A serene silence.
Until it is broken by the scream of a girl, out and about for an early dip.
Always on the lookout for trouble in this days, it is not long until one of the village folk come to investigate the source of the trouble.
They find
al4xz
paler than the girl who found him, his face twisted in a grisly snarl.

The body is taken back to the village and while the girl is being revived, a search is carried out of
al4xz
's house. It reveals a disturbing assortment of things like ropes, whips, handcuffs, knives and rolls of linen.
A search of the body reveals a card in it with
ESE Member
written on it in blood red colour.

The discovery is grim.
What will you do about it?

By popular request, the deadline stands retracted.

Vote count should follow in the next couple of posts (i.e. somewhere on the next page)

If discussion slows down and another deadline is posted, that one won't be retracted, no matter what.

What's the difference between setting a cat among the pigeons and setting a werewolf among the villagers?

Not much really, except perhaps for the supposed sentience of the creatures involved.

In fact some might say that in both cases, the proposed victims run around like a headless chicken, to use another zoological metaphor.
Lots of activity, no useful result. A chicken without a head is a dead chicken, whether it lasts 18 months or 18 minutes.

How long will the populace of Lupieri last?

After a long day of squabbling, the populace of Lupieri set about returning to their its homes. There was a slight air of disappointment around them, having failed to decide on a lynch.

However, the excitement was just beginning...
As the villagers reluctantly started making their way back home,
Mr. Flay
who lived in a little cottage on the grounds of the Lovato estate, suddenly fell down.
As people went to check what happened, he started mumbling incoherently. His body was burning hot and the delirium seemed to have addled his brain. Perhaps he'd been quiet all day because of his ailment.
Though now, we will never know...

Looks like the Lovato estate will be requiring a new
gardener
...

After the sudden death of
Mr. Flay
, the populace of Lupieri lingered in the village green, discussing the new development. The thought of impending darkness was forgotten for a moment.
That was until a hideous cackle broke them out of their conversations and reveries.

"Hahahahaha! This is just the first of many!
The end is coming! I've seen it!
None of you are safe!!"

The voice seemed to come from all sides at once and from nowhere at all.
Startled, the people tried to look around for this would-be doom-sayer but they could not locate them.

Lupieri had its fair share of loons, more so since the moon afflicted lycanthropy took root and there were a fair few suspects in the running for cackling doom-sayer but for one reason or another, nobody voiced any opinions. Instead, noticing the approaching hour of darkness, as cold dusk set in, everyone decided to go back home.

Thirteen.
It is such a strange number. Revered and reviled alike.

Christians take it to stand for treachery as done by Judas Iscariot.
Sikhs look at it as a remembrance of God and devotion of all of one's self to Him.

There are 13 principles of faith in Judaism.
A witches' coven may have a maximum of 13 members.

Whether held as lucky or unlucky, the origin of the Baker's Dozen is interesting.

With its origins in Egypt and its flat bread, baking came to be a sort of art in medieval Europe, where landlords used to have an open oven, to whom housewives used to bring their dough to make into bread.
Very often, the bakers had a small trapdoor in the back where his assistant could pinch some of the dough, which he sold as his own.
A thrifty practice, until a monarch got to know of it and threatened hefty penalties for this kind of thievery. To avoid losing a hand and to create goodwill, bakers used to include a thirteenth loaf in their dozen, in order not to be called a cheat.

In modern times, 13 items are baked because they are conveniently placed in the baking trays and also, the 13th item could be lost, eaten, burnt or ruined in some way and there would still be a dozen to go around.

Whatever his motives,
mneme
always carried out the practice of serving a
baker
's dozen in his bakery. In some ways, the number seemed to bring him good luck. His bakery allowed him a modest way of life, contented and happy. His creations created goodwill through their taste and his customers always came back for more. He never had any complaints or disgruntled customers.

At least this is what most of the town believed until you found him today, rather over-baked and almost unrecognisable, bound and gagged, in his own great oven.

His assistant came in early in the morning, a little timid about being out and about before dawn but the work must go on. He tidied up the bakery, as was his wont, and prepared to fire up the oven, only to notice that it seemed to have achieved baking temperature already. Since he hadn't seen his master, he found this strange. He opened the door and he saw his master.
He probably needs a new vocation now, after he recovers from his catatonic shock.

Long had there been speculation, rife among the masses, about how exactly honourable Hizzoner
IH, the mayor of Lupieri
was.
He seemed to live a life way beyond the capacity of a government servant. He appeared to serve the people, true; but he liked keeping up appearances himself and seemed to do that a little too well.
IH
was always under the scrutiny of authorities for what appeared to be a number of shady dealings which his underlings carried out. The paper trail never really led to him though.
However, one fine morning, it seemed that the town had had enough of Hizzoner and the council decided to vote him out of office, serving a sentene of dizzoner on him.

IH
's numerous properties were promptly attached and examined but beyond the trappings of apparently ill gotten wealth, nothing really malevolent could be found in his houses. But then again, he'd always been quite good at covering up his tracks and no charge of fraud was ever really pinned on him.
Who knows what the reality is...

Well. It's up to you to find out!

Shanba the Village Strongman
was a brawny fellow.
While not quite the brightest candle in the candelabra, he still had a strong sense of justice and right and wrong. He detested seeing anyone being wronged and ever more so, to see someone doing a wrong unto someone else. So when
Shanba
set it into his head to right a wrong, there was seldom anything which could really stop him from having his way.

On this night
Shanba
had perceived something amiss about
DrippingGoofball
. He had spent a considerable amount of time thinking on the situation at hand and he had decided that
DrippingGoofball
just had to go!

The town's resident
Silversmith
did not reside too far away from the
Strongman
's cottage and it wasn't too long until he had made his way to
DrippingGoofball
's house. A cheerful and energetic lady, the
Silversmith
called out to her visitor to enter, even though it was quite late. She knew she had nothing to worry about with supernatural visitors and any others would hardly bother knocking if the intended mischief now, would they?

Well,
Shanba
was the polite sort who *did* knock and unfortunately for the lady, or otherwise, she never quite knew what hit her, as she was bludgeoned on her head, repeatedly, by an exquisite (and heavy) silver candelabra.

There was no real sense of remorse in the
Strongman
as he left the house. He firmly believed that he had done his duty and that no fault could be attached to him. Whether he faces consequences for his misplaced sense of duty or not, we shall never know. Well, at least he didn't seem to face consequences in the ordinary mortal way.

-x-

Mastermind of Sin
had winced inwardly when he saw
Shanba
walk into the
Silversmith
's house. Many people dismiss silver's power over supernatural being such as vampires and werewolves as hokey but
Mastermind of Sin
was painfully aware of reality and he gave a grimace at the thought of all that silver so near him and his essence.

He wondered what the visit was all about and whether it was a social call or something else. Hunger gnawed at his insides and he was impatient to feed. He considered leaving to go find some other victim when
Shanba
emerged from
DrippingGoofball
's house.
The
werewolf
smelled the warm blood that had soaked in to part of the
Strongman
's tunic and it just served to fuel his appetite. Once his victim was safely out of the malicious aura of the
Silversmith
's house,
Mastermind of Sin
pounced.
Shanba
was strong, but not quite strong enough to overcome a being imbibed with supernatural strength, and a ravenous appetite to boot.
He didn't last long. Neither his soul, nor his worldly form...
The sounds of feral devouring were enough to disconcert the strongest of stomachs.

-x-

Then there are those people whose stomachs seem to be made of steel. For a figure flitted in the shadows, watching with interest, while
Mastermind of Sin
displayed poor table manners. Neither the sight nor the sounds made it queasy and the figure watched with a detached sense of someone who is beyond the ordinary human feelings. Or perhaps someone who has seen it all and nothing surprises them any more.

It didn't take too long for all of
Shanba
to disappear and once the
wolf
had finished licking its muzzle, it gave a lazy stretch, satiated and content. I suppose contentment is a good feeling to die with. Wouldn't you agree? For as the wolf arched its back in languor, a shot rang out.
There was a howl of anguish and
Mastermind of Sin
fell down dead. There are antidotes even to the supernatural.

One of the first things the Estate had done when the first news of werewolves came into Lupieri was to invest in silver bullets...

There are various different theories to the origins of the phrase "cat got your tongue"?
It's even more ironic with the cat seemingly having gotten hold of
bird1111
's tongue...

One version says it's got something to do with things that cats bring back home from the hunt...
Another is a shipping term...related to secrecy and keeping secrets on threat of pain...
The Jewish version...well, one just wonders what kind of things Lucius Lovato likes at the mansion...
...
...
...

Which one applies to
gloria1111
? Does only 1? Or do they all?

We shall never know. However, we shall always wonder...
What went on between those beautiful ears of hers...

It's the age old cliché!
Whodunit?
The butler did it!

It was the butler in the conservatory with the lead pipe.
Lead may be soft enough to use conveniently but it sure did a number on
~N9V~
's head.
In fact, you only know it's
~N9V~
because he's the only one missing in Lupieri and the town's
Magistrate
is the least likely deserter of all.
