uggh.

I'm stopping the server for now, until future notice.

apparently the fix we implemented had unforeseen consequences.

please be patient with us.

from now to whenever server comes back, please play on vanilla instead. thanks!

I should've known that as soon as I got serious about tree breeding again the server would implode :P

I know this is just morbid curiosity on my part, but what was it that caused the problem in the first place?

All right

IMPORTANT POST HERE:

There is something very important we (the Admin team) think that everyone should be aware of.

Modded MineCraft is not bug proof.

This you know, I've done a bit of research, and I've found that every modded server has its issues. What I'm saying here is that by choosing to play with mods, you accept the possibility for world breaking bugs and corrupted chunks, and whatever else might happen.

The most recent incident (broken tile entities corrupting an entire chunk), resulted in all the residents of ClamCastle (this means 4 of the server's most active players) losing
everything
in their ME Storage system - and that really sucks, but it's not anyone's fault. It was simply a case of mods not playing nice with each other. (This particular bug happened between SecretRooms and Applied Energistics' ME Cable, but due to its nature it's also most likely an error that can and would happen with SecretRooms and ANY irregularly shaped block with an important tile entity attached, like (for example) Thermal Expansion's Redstone Conduits and Liquiducts. tl;dr - this most likely isn't even a bug that COULD be fixed, so it's not even the fault of the Mod Author for "not making their Mod play nice with others") In this situation and others like it, of course the admin team will try everything to rectify the issue, including spawning in missing items.

With every new mod added, comes the possibility for more world breaking errors to happen. With that in mind, what we want from you guys is a discussion on what we want the future of Mafiacraft to be. Here're the options as we see them:

A) A single CONCRETE mod pack, NO additions whatsoever, only updating to different Minecraft versions when every mod has a stable release for the new version of Minecraft. This may result in the most stable and longest lasting world possible, but if the world ever breaks (which it almost certainly still will), we get EVERY POSSIBLE OUNCE OF COMMUNITY INPUT before updating.

THINGS TO DISCUSS:

Will this kind of world stagnate, and will people get bored with it, similarly to what happen near the end of DW20?
Where do we draw the line on additions - right now, with v1.1.1? One possibility here is to have MafiaCraft 2.0 NOW, and have community decide what goes in it from a blank slate up, then after it is finalized, have no more changes EVER.

B) An constantly evolving modpack, adding in new mods, taking out mods, with semi-frequent, open for discussion restarts, the goal being that everyone plays with as much of the fun toys as possible, even if that means taking out old stuff that everyone is very familiar with (ex: giving up on RedPower updating and switching to immibis' Mods; switching ExtraBiomes XL for something like Biomes o' Plenty or Natura) This may result in a lack of long-lasting build projects, and may turn off people, but a benefit would be that you get to try all the cool things you want.

THINGS TO DISCUSS:

Will this kind of world stagnate from lack of playerbase consistency? Will individuals get angry about or embrace trying to learn new Mods on a regular basis?
(again) Where do we draw the line on additions - will we allow people to submit new Mods for consideration every single week? Every other week?
If yes, how can we (the Admin team) best streamline the process for quickly getting community input on Mods while still allowing enough time to get permissions and edit the submission file for the pack's update?
If no, do we open up the Modpack for additions whenever the community feels like it wants Mod X or Mod Z, or do we operate more on a "hands-on" basis, waiting for it to feel like the Modpack could use something new?

C) Somewhere in middle, adding stuff, but with increased risks of bugs, and an unfortunately unstable world with the possibility of resets occurring if anything messes up. This may seem the most attractive option (or maybe it doesn't), but understand this is basically what we have now. The issues we've seen with this are that new problems have shown up and keep showing up, and these are EXTREMELY difficult to deal with on a constant basis.

D) YOUR UNIQUE IDEA HERE

We really need to discuss this, because I and the rest of the Admins do not want you all feeling that your time in this server gets wasted, but at the same time the Admins have ALL invested a lot of time and energy in making this server as good as possible, even if we can't be on to troubleshoot 24/7. We want to play and enjoy stuff too.

I thought we already agreed, the goal should be to keep a stable world for as long as possible, but still consider adding/removing mods as desired that don't affect world, and if we find a world-changing mod that is anted badly enough, at that time begin discussing world regeneration?

wasn't aware this still needed to be decided.

Also, I thought everyone knew the whole "mods r buggy be warned" disclaimer.

but yeah, goodpost. (Y)

That was a lot of text and I read most of it. I dont know if the below is encompassed in one of A-B-C, but here's what I think:

Stable set of mods between updates. As the game gets updated, perhaps a review of the mods would be in order, given any bugs brought to the attention of the admin team, and consider new mods
at that time
, What I DON'T want is frequent restarts, though a restart every 9 - 12 months might not be bad. A constant server that never changes is boring and WOULD stagnate, but mixing it up too much/too often doesn't give the stability most people (I think) might be more comfortable with.

As it stands right now, there seems to be a VERY IMPORTANT POST about the server weekly, if not daily.
Art is cool.

sigh... what happened sounds like it was unfortunate but does it really warrent another "future of the server" level
argument
discussion? Didn't we already basically discuss all this? Mafiacraft has been up for like a month and now we have to rediscuss everything again?

I hate that this is a mafia site sometimes. Too much discussion, not enough doing.

Is it going to be worth even playing on the server when I get home tonight or are we in limbo again? Klaz, DW20 wasn't stagnant because people got bored with it. It was dead because of crashes and because there was like a month of limbo where the fate of the server was being discussed and it was implied that the end result would likely be a reset. Maybe some people got bored but not everyone had unlimited UUM set ups.

Seriously, I wanna breed trees. Its probably going to take 2 months. If I can't assume the server is going to last at least that long, then why should I even bother playing? Not saying something wouldn't happen that could bork everything, but the intention should be for the world to be up indefinitely. If we're already at the point where we're needing to have these types of discussions again, well it doesn't really inspire a lot of confidence that the current world will be around long enough to even get to a small fraction of the things I want to do on the server. Why should I build the large maze I've been planning for months, or a roller coaster, or any of the other parts of rhinoland I have planned? Why should I spend months breeding trees and bees? why should I waste time building anything other than basic shelter. Why should I build anything cool at all when its more likely than not to disappear before its even finished? This is kinda frustrating. I thought we were past all this. Why can't we have nice things? I wanna go back to when people played to build cool things, not to get to the end of the tech tree the fastest and then get bored. When it was simply assumed that worlds would last more or less forever and that is what everyone mostly wanted without question. Really, this is depressing.
