I don't understand the Rising Star award. Are there not enough new players to justify having a best newbie award?

That said, we are looking into adding an award that captures some of what we like about Best Role Claim: namely that it recognizes good play in an individual thread that doesn't require being good year round. We're still discussing what the best way to implement this is, however.
Best Gambit has been suggested before, but it's just not a good award. While I don't really believe Best Role Claim causes bad behavior, Best Gambit may well do so.
There already is one. "Most Cunning Manipulation" can be for scum with good claims and town with [fake] claims that net scum but I think it should be a single game award and not a body of work.
We could have something like a "Leader of Scum" that would be a body of work for excellent performances as scum/third party.
I like the golden fendoa award as a lifetime achievment award for great mafia play throughout the years.
Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I think the issue was with the name, players could have the best newbie award above their name like 2.5 ears into their carrier in the extreme cases, thats just silly.
Rising Star rewards what's actually important about Best Newbie without the restriction on join date, which apart from being complicated for the system is not what we actually want to reward.
I kinda like the idea of rewarding new players and having a separate award for players that have improved their play.

I like the idea of awards depending, as much as possible within the limits of a necessarily arbitrary judging process, on achievements to which anyone can aspire.

Like, I can think of a couple non-admins who might be considered for one a couple years down the line if they keep going like they have been, so it's not like it will only go to admins (IMO). However, I do think that your typical Golden Fedora person maybe will have been a listmod or something similar at some point, just because the type of person who's going to contribute enough and be respected enough to get a Golden Fedora is going to be the same type of person who volunteers to do important jobs on-site anyway.
I agree with this sentiment. I can think of a bunch of people that 2 or 3 years down the line would all qualify.

1 year from what date? Because if scummies judgements are due on July 30th, and a newbie joins on July 15, they obviously aren't getting best newbie then, but if we wait til next year, they'll be too old, and out of the running.
This is why Rising Star is the best choice logisitically.

See, this is exactly what I mean. I didn't "come up with" Team Skittles as an epithet, but because I used it in the public forums, I get credit for it.
Do you think there could be a reward for QTs? I'm not quite sure what it'd be ("Greatest Ghost Gathering" or something like that, most likely), but I think there should be a scummy for them. I've been in plenty of totally-awesome dead QTs in games which were totally pathetic (though one could argue that the dead QTs were totally awesome because the scum killed all the totally awesome players and left only the totally pathetic ones behind ), and that means that they'd pretty much never get nom'd for a scummy due to the in-game play, but if there was a QT award of some kind...
(Gah, I feel like I could explain this so much clearer. But do you get the general idea and do you think it has merit?)
In post 140, SleepyKrew wrote:No, because then Brightest Day would win a scummy and we don't want that happening.
No it wouldn't. It is too old to be nominated.
I don't generally like the idea of the QT nomination as things are often spoiled in there and it would just be a continuation of a competition rather than trying to root for your team/have fun.
Some things need to remain fun, for everyone's mental sake.
Just a general observation, but how come there is no equivalent to Paragon for Mafia members? Or is Best Manipulation intended to be a spiritual successor for scum?
I don't know what you would even be able to call that Scummy, or if it would even be practical, but I think everyone should have an equal chance at getting scummies of the same caliber regardless of what alignment fate decides to deal them.
