Eat Poop You Cat (Game Over)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Tue Mar 23, 2010 6:47 am

Post by mith »

Results!

Telephone Pictionary ("Eat Poop You Cat") - This is a silly little exercise where each player submits a sentence. Each sentence is passed to another player, who draws a picture for that sentence. The picture is then passed to yet another player, who writes a sentence for the picture, and so on until each thread has visited every player. The results are then posted for the amusement of all. (This one could handle a lot of players.)
Sign up by posting here. I'll leave signups open for a couple of days - in the meantime, you can start thinking of a sentence you want to start your chain with.

In order to play, you'll need the ability to draw pictures and send them to me. You can draw on the computer (using anything from Paint to Photoshop) or draw on paper and scan (I might even allow photos in a future edition).

More details on rules to follow.

Not that this effects the players in the slightest, but...

In the FtF version, you just pass to your left each time, so you're always after the same person; I think it would be more interesting to vary the ordering so that you're writing/drawing after someone different each time.

Given the number of players, I thought about splitting into groups, but if I vary the ordering it would be just as easy to keep everyone in one "pool" and just limit the number of rounds (so not everyone would participate on a given chain). But we'll see how it goes, I may decide to just keep it running until everyone has participated on every chain.

You may submit your starting sentence now.
Signups will remain open until tomorrow, but I may start sending sentences for the first round of drawing before that.

Guidelines:

1. All submissions should follow all the usual rules and guidelines of posting on this site. I reserve the right you kick you out if necessary.
2. Starting sentences should be of a reasonable length (say, 4-12 words).
3. Other that the starting sentences, your submission should attempt to describe what you see in the picture you are given or draw the sentence given. I probably won't moderate this heavily, but we'll all think it's pretty lame if it becomes obvious afterward that you're just submitting random sentences.
4. Images should be hand-drawn (no copy-pasting of photos, for example).
5. Obviously, don't discuss your submissions with anyone.

(Though I'll probably start sending out sentences for the first drawing round before I have all the sentences.)

Out of 31 /ins, I've received 28 submissions. Not bad. I've PMed the other three, and will give them at least a couple days before I consider removing them from the list.

Most of you will receive a sentence to draw this afternoon; signups will remain open until then.

In case it wasn't clear from the rules, you should avoid using words in your drawings - it defeats the point of the game. Symbols are fine (but I encourage you not to overuse them - you're not drawing a rebus, and the goal isn't really to get the next player to reproduce the sentence exactly, your goal is to draw the sentence you are given).

Also, please submit images which are
exactly
800x600 (I know some of you read that as a maximum initially). I'd like to keep them standardized for a nice display at the end.

farside got the attributes thing sorted; the other problem she's been having is that photobucket seems to be resizing it when she uploads (from 800x600 to 798x604, which is weird). Any advice from those who use photobucket?

I've received 27/32 drawings. I'll poke anyone I haven't received from.

Meanwhile, I'll start sending out drawings for the next round. Remember, you are trying to guess what the drawing is supposed to represent.

Ok, sent the rest. If you haven't received a picture yet, it's because either:

1. You haven't drawn one yet.
2. The person before you in the chain hasn't drawn one yet.

Ok, all but two of the drawings have been sent out now (one not received, one to go to the player who hasn't submitted one).

Will give that player another day or two before dropping him. I'll leave the chain in (so someone may get that sentence for the next drawing round).

Heh.

I'll probably have some/most of the sentences sent out tomorrow. Assuming people pick up their PMs quickly. The sentence rounds haven't taken much time, it's the drawing rounds that are slowing everything down.

Ok, inHim's drawing is in, so that finishes off Round 3. I've also got enough Round 4 sentences in to start sending for the next round, so I'll get started on that tonight or tomorrow.

Just to clarify, I'm not in any way desperate to have people fill in extra spots. We've got 32 different chains going, and it won't hurt the game to not hit all of them every round. If you're reading and missed the signups, I can probably plug you in as a replacement (though I won't do that for too much longer), and I can handle a temporary replacement if you know you're going to be gone for a round (heck, you can skip a couple rounds if you need to, just let me know so I don't assume you've flaked). But losing players isn't what's slowing us down so much as waiting on slow players who don't let me know they need to drop.

Sorry about the delays. The internet in Florida was dodgy (they had a laptop on a toaster at one point to get it high enough for a decent signal), and so we only used it for essentials.

Round 6 will start tonight. Zorblag returned, and since I've been gone anyway I've added him back in the rotation. destructor has dropped, and I haven't received from 12Keyblade or Drench yet, so they will be dropped soon.

Strictly speaking, the "replacements" aren't replacements... we've had players drop, which means we have more active chains than players. You've just been placed in one of those available spots, you're not replacing any individual player.

This is just the first case of someone flaking during a sentence round (not surprising, the sentence rounds are quick), so I need someone to fill in for that spot. You were the obvious choice, since you are already in the game but didn't participate in Round 6.

I somehow missed Zodiark's /in, I'll send him a Round 7 PM shortly.

Ok, all but two sentences sent for Round 9. I'm going to double up on the two chains that are behind, so Brandi and Jahudo will receive sentences to draw after imaginality and animorpherv1 have drawn, and two other players do sentences for those drawings ("Round 10").

We'll probably go to Round 12 (so one more drawing round after this one).

[While I agree that some of the starting sentences were too silly, several of the current odd sentences are more due to bizarre drawings than people trying to be funny with their sentences. I'd reserve judgement for now, and name and shame once the results are up. :P]

Fenchurch, I'll try to remember to assign you one this weekend. Sentences usually come in quick anyway.

Round 12 going out now.

I've got three chains that are missing their last drawing. If you're interested in doing an extra drawing (quickly), post here.

I've sent gorillaman his, since he would only fit in one of the three chains.

Zang, I'll wait on yours until I know who is getting the third; you could go either place, so I don't want to limit my options.

Ok, the other two bonus round sentences have been sent.

Now I need three volunteers to write an extra sentence for those drawings.

The last drawing is in!

Waiting on five sentences. And also reteaching myself some php so I can write something to spit the chains out in a semi-elegant way, rather than making 32 html pages. Finished chains should be up tomorrow sometime.

Overall comments...

There's lots of funny stuff here, though there are some things that frustrated me (as far as people ignoring rules/the spirit of the game, overly complex starting sentences, and a few cases of people not trying very hard with their sentences). We've got some really good artwork (Brandi, Jahudo, gorillaman, and destructor were my favorites overall - I need to lock you guys in a room and get some Mafia card art together - and lots of good individual contributions by others).

I'd be interested in running this again (though after a break... this was a lot of work to run!). Be thinking about rule changes/clarifications you might want to make.

Individual chain comments...

Chain 1: I got frustrated with ShadowLurker throughout, as he kept going for "rebus" style drawings to try to get whoever followed him to guess the sentence exactly (this never worked), despite several warnings. If I run this again, I will just flat out disallow that sort of thing, but I'm glad I wasn't too strict about it here, because chenhsi's very literal follow-up was wonderful.

Chain 2: I was pretty worried what might follow from dramonic's drawing...

Chain 3: The starting sentence was pretty weird, so this chain reached it's peak with Brandi's excellent drawing, at which point I don't really blame animorpherv1 for simplifying (although SpongeBob seems hard to ignore...).

Chain 4: If I didn't dislike cats so much, I would feel sorry for this one... Brandi's cat clearly has a rough life, and Cayke's is confused and shut out.

Chain 5: Ether did a great job of communicating the "Sam" part of the sentence, but that got lost... and Brandi's drawing is disturbing. This chain is all over the place, great stuff.

Chain 6: Nothing too crazy here apart from the shift from "bad dude" to "demon ant". gorillaman's drawing is possibly my favorite of the bunch.

Chain 7: Another weird starting sentence that went good places. I liked destructor's unique style throughout.

Chain 8: In the middle of the game, as we were losing players, I was considering ending two or three chains that didn't seem to be going anywhere. It was hard to see anything funny coming out of this one. gorillaman made me glad I kept it going.

Chain 9: The first of two penguin chains, and Jahudo got placed on both of them (which is good, he does a good penguin).

Chain 10: Sangria to Beer to Pepsi... I guess EPYC players are less alcoholic than the average scummer. (My favorite Jahudo drawing.)

Chain 11: This one didn't go anywhere after moving to bacon...

Chain 12: The starting sentence was cute, but too complex. But it's still pretty amazing that it went from that to an alien bug robot.

Chain 13: Another good gorillaman drawing, and the black mushroom sentence is funny.

Chain 14: Ok, Brandi, what were you going for with the "D"? I still haven't figured that out.

Chain 15: I feel Furry missed a golden opportunity to focus on the one-legged aspect of Cybele's drawing.

Chain 16: Beggar to Moneybags to Carnie to Rambo? Awesome.

Chain 17: I am a little disturbed by the horns on the back of Shanba-devil's head.

Chain 18: I am far more disturbed by this chain.

Chain 19: This one didn't change drastically after getting to dinosaurs, but some nice drawings here.

Chain 20: Maemuki's drawing was interesting but very vague... which led to great things.

Chain 21: Nothing really jumps out in this one, it's just a really good chain overall.

Chain 22: dramonic' sentence... makes no sense. I think cow commented on it when he sent his drawing.

Chain 23: Jahudo's Cupid looks deranged.

Chain 24: One of the ones that didn't seem to be going anywhere, though cow did at least give us an epic duel at the end. Perhaps if we had gone a few more rounds...

Chain 25: Lots of rage!

Chain 26: Cayke, is the cop sticking the gun in the guy's nose?

Chain 27: Music to... puking? Classy.

Chain 28: The third that stayed true to the original, and this one didn't really change at all. I guess the subjects of the sentence are too distinctive.

Chain 29: The best example of what was pointed out in the thread (that the idea of the game is to start with something simple and see how it evolves into something crazy, not to start with something bizarre). Still funny, though.

Chain 30: I missed that SL broke the "No copying photos" rule on this one. animorpherv1 pretty much ignoring SL's mess was funny, though (in the opposite extreme from chenhsi's Chain 1 response), and it works as a reboot of the chain. Somehow this went from that four word sentence to bizarre and wonderful things in a few short rounds.

Chain 31: Similar to the last one, really. dramonic reboots the chain with a five word sentence, but it's a really difficult sentence to draw.

Chain 32: A contender for favorite chain overall. Going from Miss Chiquita to Brandi's drawing and then somehow back to the Miss Chiquita (but now with a Dragon Ball) is awesome.

Indeed. And as I said, there will be a bit of a break (a couple weeks, probably), unless someone else wants to organize it.

I'll be done with this year's road tripping next week, so I should have time to get this going after that. But if someone else wants to run one, I'd have no problem with that either, and I'd be happy to do the pages for the chains.
