Open 179: B.I.R.D. 7P (Over)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:29 pm

Post by yabbaguy »

Welcome to the B.I.R.D (Bomb Industry Research Development) Complex! In this nuclear age, having the world's top-of-the-line weaponry is essential for survival. We currently have a capacity of several hundred dedicated workers exploring new technologies to get the most bang for the buck in every explosives device we manufacture, and are also now dedicated to providing the best in human self-defense techniques against the ongoing weaponry threat. The explosives industry has grown for more demand than ever, and we remain the government's leading choice for weaponry expertise.

That's what the plaque outside the institution says.

Right now, it's far from the usual fast-paced work scene right now. Two Mafia members from out-of-country have infiltrated the B.I.R.D. Complex. Breaking and entering with a payload of explosives, they set off a multi-stage explosion throughout the building, killing all but 5 employees in the process. Realizing this, the Mafia have also bugged the security system in the place to completely lock down everybody inside, thus sealing it off from the outside world. It also nicely functions as a cellphone dead zone now.

Perhaps the two infiltrators have some information on them as to how to stop this bug they've planted in the place. If the infiltrators are killed and searched, perhaps you'll find these instructions. Thanks to this explosion, however, you've lost all memory as to who your friends and strangers are in this, *ahem*, birdhouse. Right now though, you've decided to settle on a mob justice method of getting rid of the infiltrators. It becomes plainly obvious after searching the cadavers that there's still a security patrol and a medic somewhere among the small group of you to assist in your quest to eradicate these infiltrators. However, the infiltrators still have a few spare charges left to get rid of whoever stands in their way. Stop them before they outnumber you, or these intruders will become the new heads of the B.I.R.D complex.

The issue of national security is at stake. Failure will be at a very large cost to your nation.

The Setup is Bird 7P. It is as follows:

2 Mafia Goons
1 Cop (Cannot be doc-protected)
1 Doctor
3 Townies

Respectively, here are each of the roles' PMs.
You are spies sent by your home country to infiltrate this nation's bomb research plant in order to gain control of a very vital part of their war weaponry system. Then you can take over with your own team of specialists and start wreaking havoc. Unfortunately, your preliminary bombing didn't get rid of 5 people, but at least their shock has made them forget who actually works at the plant and who is just standing in. You've smuggled a few explosives in yourself, so you're able to pick some people off at Night. Explosives are loud, in case you didn't know, so you're probably only going to get away with this murder only once per Night.

You are a
Mafia Goon
with [----]. Each Night, you are able to communicate with each other by any means and, once you're all set, submit the name of one person you want to kill.

You win when you equal or exceed the town in numbers.

Please send a PM back confirming receipt of this PM. The thread can be found {{here}}.
You are the only security patrol unaccounted for among the seven of you. Keeping this a secret would probably be an advisable move, since you know the two infiltrators are going to kill you if they find out, especially considering that your body is incapable of recovering from a blast of an explosive; not even the medic can save you if you are hit. The good news, however, is that you know of one last computer that can look up who works here and who's actually on the Most Wanted list. Thanks to its absurd power inefficency, however, you're probably not going to be able to do more than one of these searches at a time.

You are a
Cop
. Each Night, pick a person to investigate and I will tell you with "[Target] is {Guilty/Innocent}", dependent on whether they're Mafia or Town aligned respectively. You cannot be Doc protected. You win when the Mafia are eradicated before they match or exceed you in numbers.

Please send a PM back confirming receipt of this PM. The thread can be found {{here}}.
You are the only medic unaccounted for among the seven of you. Keeping this a secret would probably be an advisable move, since getting hit by one of those explosive charges will incapacitate you to the point where you can't even save yourself from your agonizing death. Otherwise, you are able to quickly rush to the victim and try to stop their bleeding and save their life. You know all the security patrols that existed before the bombing of your building were never going to hold up even if you treated them within a split second, since they're old and frail. Otherwise, this method has been foolproof on any normal human being... if you can get to them in time.

You are a
Doc
. Each Night, select a person other than yourself to protect. If they are blown up by the Mafia, they will not die. Protections will fail on the Cop automatically. You win when the Mafia are eradicated before they match or exceed you in numbers.

Please send a PM back confirming receipt of this PM. The thread can be found {{here}}.
You are a first-year employee at the B.I.R.D. complex. You have absolutely no specialization whatsoever, but as far as the other four innocents, whoever they are, are concerned, you could be the very threat that's put them into this surreal situation. Your task is to convince them of your innocence and help lead them to the Mafia who's bugged the place and is threatening to take over. Just because you're powerless doesn't mean you're necessarily useless. The logical part of your brain is still intact, after all.

You are a
Vanilla Townie
. You have no Night powers. You win when the Mafia are eradicated before they match or exceed you in numbers.

Please send a PM back confirming receipt of this PM. The thread can be found {{here}}.

And now... rules.

1) DAYS AND VOTING
>>> Each Day, you all talk, babble, shout, get flustered, defend, dupe, dodge, and eventually Vote for players by posting in the following syntax and bold formatting:
Vote: [legible form of username]
. You can also
Unvote
to retract your vote and not reassign it. To switch your vote directly from one person to another, you may merely post
Vote: [somebody else]
. I do not need an
Unvote, Vote
, but I bet some of you by force of habit will do it anyway, so yeah. I will post votecounts as close to a daily rate as possible, barring RL struggles.

I reserve sole judgment on whether or not a vote should be counted, should a dispute over syntax arise, such as partial bolding, or broken bold tags. Do not fakevote; it’s not an honorable way to play anyway.

2) LYNCH + TWILIGHT
>>> The instant a simple majority of players (half the bunch, round down, add 1) all have their votes on one person, that person is lynched, and the day automatically goes to Twilight. Twilight is the time between when the hammer vote comes down and I lock the thread and post the death scene. Everyone, including the lynched player, may still talk, but there’s no use
Unvoting
, because the very moment majority is hit, the result is sealed, whether you like it or not. Sorry.

I will let Twilight be at least 24 hours long.

3) NO LYNCH
>>> For the pacifist in you, you can also
Vote: No Lynch
. If a majority settles on that, we’ll jump straight into Night without anyone dying. There’ll still be Twilight if this decision is reached as well.

4) DAY DEADLINE
>>> The Day deadline starts at 3 weeks from the start of the Day. If it elapses, the town immediately locks in on No Lynch, and we go to Night. It’s extendable upon request, but only if I say so. If I don’t say so, tough noogies. It’s also contractable if I feel discussion is slowing down, but I’ll threaten before doing in that case.

5) NIGHT DEADLINE
>>>The Night deadline is 3 days (weekend counts collectively as a day). If your Role PM says you’ve got something to do, do it in that time or you’re considered to have slept in and will skip your Night action.

6) PRODDING
>>> I’ll prod people after 3 days of inactivity (again, weekends count for less). If you don’t post in the topic after 2 days of the prod, I’ll go replacement hunting. There is no set number of prods before forced replacement, but I reserve the right to replace the habitually prodded. No sleeping during the Day.

I can also prod upon request, provided the rationale behind your request is sound. (and it usually is)

7) GOING SOMEWHERE?
>>> Let me know IN THIS TOPIC OR BY PM if you’re going to be away for a significant period of time. I’m not one to subscribe daily to the V/LA Gazette (the thread, y’know), so submitting a column up there isn’t going to do me any good. I’ll deal with V/LA claims on a case-by-case basis, although I’ll usually excuse most short-length absences.

8) EGREGIOUS OFFENSES
>>> Do not do any of the following. Committing one of these offenses runs the possibility of being warned, yelled at, scolded, publicly humiliated, replaced, and/or modkilled. Depends on the severity and frequency of the offense, of course.
-You may not post about this game in any other thread as long as it’s running. Nor any other ongoing game in this thread.
-Don’t say anything when you’re dead. You get one, single, solitary “Bah!” post.
-Don’t be the troll, don’t feed the troll.
-All site rules apply. Don’t break them.
-I use
bolded green
. You don’t.
-Make all words in your post easy-to-read. No secret codes or invisible
ink
text.
-Do not quote Mod PMs, or pretend to. I like to keep things on the down-low. Keep it cool.
-Play to win. Don’t screw your faction up out of boredom or anger. Don’t abuse the invocation of this rule either, there are many times when apparent sabotage is strategic.

If you are modkilled, you will be considered to have lost even if your faction goes on to win. If you are modkilled as Town, the game will go to Night. If you are modkilled as Mafia, the Day will continue.

9) CALL-A-MOD™
>>> If you want me to see or do something, bold it for me to see, like:
Mod
: I need a votecount. Or...
Mod
: I need to be replaced. Or...
Mod
: I voted for him, not her. Or...
Mod
: I love you.

10) QUESTIONS? QUALMS?
>>> Feel free to PM me with any concerns about decisions or anything of the like. If I’m right, I’ll happily point out that you’re wrong. However, if I’m wrong, I’ll happily try to make things right.

11) PLEASE, ENJOY YOURSELF!
>>> This is a game of great intensity, but one must never forget it is a game of great fun, and (most often) a team game. Don’t get overly personal, play to win, and enjoy yourself as much as possible, even if there’s a pretty high chance you’re going to metaphorically die. So, go team.

12) THE OBLIGATORY ELASTIC CLAUSE
>>> These rules are mutable mid-game if conflict should arise, or if I or someone else notices something abnormal in hindsight. I also have the final say on any conflict’s resolution which isn’t explicit in the rules.

Yami's the only one yet to confirm, but he's got plenty of time. His first post in-thread will be considered a confirm.

Generic News Network-- DEVELOPING STORY: B.I.R.D. Complex Under Siege

Today, a stealth attack on the B.I.R.D. Complex left onlookers stunned as witnesses crowded outside the Complex, some in tears, others utterly shocked as to the proceedings that have taken place today. Right now, the security system is believed to have been bugged by the infiltrators, and while rescue teams are making attempts to circumvent the system, they have been unsuccessful so far. Contact with employees inside has been unsuccessful, leading authorities to believe that the phone landlines have been taken out as well.

Right now, the nearby community is worried over the safety of all inside. The building miraculously appears in stable condition, but many have reason to believe that those near and dear to them have died from the massive bombings that took place late last night. Again, due to the security bug, police have no way of tapping into the cameras and examining the scene inside, but we will continue to follow this story as it develops and more information is revealed.

7 are alive, meaning 4 is enough for a lynch (or not). Good luck.

Deadline is 7 PM EST (GMT-5) on November 15th.

D1 begins now. I'll keep status updates of all in the building on the first post.

AndyTony stands up, proclaims his hatred for saberwolf, and immediately proceeds to smash open a window and jump out it. As everyone immediately looks five stories down to see what happened, they're immediately re-distracted by another person moaning and crawling out of the shadows inside the Complex itself. Who could that be?

Searching for AndyTony's replacement now.

Suddenly,
Budja
appears out of the shadows, which causes everyone to leap back in astonishment.

One person says: W-we just saw AndyTony hop out the window. It was wild!

Suddenly, Budja starts crying. "What's wrong?" another asks.

"Yeah, I worked with him. It's sad to see him go." (Insert gasp from everyone in the B.I.R.D. Lounge... does that mean co-employee or co-spy?)

Generic News Network- B.I.R.D. Complex Audio Feed Tapped

Earlier today, officials were able to bypass a portion of the security bug and were able to tap into the audio, but not the video surveillance that overlooks the B.I.R.D. Complex. The President is looking for anybody who has an overall good sense of personnel in the Complex to come into his office and help him discern the voices of those in the Complex; should contact be successfully established with the Complex, the names of the actual employees and their descriptions will be fed to them.

Officials are still working to override the door lockdown and video cutoff. The estimated time for this to be successfully completed could take about two weeks, according to the leaders of this software hacking project. Assistant Overseer of the Complex, Harold Johnson, states that "due to the short supply of food in the Complex itself," this would be an insufficent timeframe without jeopardizing the physical health of all inside. While officials will continue in this effort to break through, doubt is running high as to whether or not officials can break into the Complex before the infiltrators succeed.

President: You Mr. Johnson, do you recognize anybody?

*audio feed plays, awfully full of static*

Johnson: Sounds high-pitched. Wait- did you hear that? I think he said something like "yabbaguy here."

President: The voice sounds almost robotic. Is the guy even human? And what the hell sort of a name is that?

Sure Toro and Budja, those *seem* to be legit employee ID cards. However, let's remember that the circumstances of the attack involved the infiltrators posing as employees, and that probably would include forging employee badges. I don't know their validities, of course. Just saying.

President: *shouting at computer* Of course you know the nature of their validities, you moron! You can play dumb with them, but I can see right through your act!

*President's computer suddenly statics, as an avatar comes on screen. It lights up when yabbaguy talks*

Yabbaguy: Hello. Just what do you think you're doing?

President + Johnson: (looking at each other nervously) Nothing, nothing...

Yabbaguy: Good. Let's keep it that way. *crashes computer that is receiving the audio feed*

*silence for a good few minutes in the office*

President: How the [beep] did this thing infiltrate our firewall? Get the Investigation Department Complex on the phone, we've got a situation here!

*Johnson dials frantically, phone rings. Within seconds, a gruff-sounding man in his 30s picks up*

Dispatcher: Hello, I.D. Complex.

Toro, for the record, you've been consistently miscapitalizing "Bud
j
a" on your ballot. You saw his I.D. card just fine, are you having vision difficulties?

Johnson: Yes, this is Harold Johnson from the B.I.R.D. Complex.

Dispatcher: With whom would you like to speak?

Johnson: The General of Communications, please.

Dispatcher: I'll forward you to Mr. Raskin.

*a groovy jazz loop distracts Johnson from a rather long 2-minute wait, then Raskin picks up*

Raskin: Yes Mr. Johnson?

Johnson: Raskin, the executive office's security has been breached. Basically, we were tapping the audio feed, then whatever weird robot personality they have running the place basically just tripped our computers and crashed our entire server. That thing is out of control. They even gave it a cooky name, I believe it was... yabbaguy?

Raskin: *slight chuckle* I'll try to investigate the virus, but I'd expect since it's localized in the B.I.R.D. Complex, tracing it wouldn't be much of a problem.

Johnson: I'm more interested in the specs of it, and its origin, because I'm not totally sold that it's an actual robot controlling it. I think somebody's having fun with a voice modulation machine to screw up all these subjects. There's evidence from what we've heard already that the survivors seem to be in a mentally crippled state. They seem to be getting in a slight argument with each other.

Raskin: *Slight* argument? I'd be livid if I learned there were people in there who wanted me dead. What else are they doing?

Johnson: Well, I'm hearing mentions to people "voting" others-

President: JOHNSON! OVER HERE!

Johnson: Excuse me, the President would like to see me now. I'll keep you posted.

Raskin: Please do. Goodbye.

President: We have a mute and poor quality video feed, but look at this! What are they doing to that person?

Johnson: Oh... my God. I think they're beating him to the de- OH GOD! *looks away*

*they witness someone (Toro actually) slicing a knife into Budja's throat. Budja immediately becomes good and dead.*

Johnson: My goodness... it's out of hand in there. Is this Mafia manipulation?

President: It could be mob justice. It's not always right, but it may be employee desperation. Either way, we need to accelerate our timeframe. Get more people involved in this project. From anywhere. Go!

Johnson: Yes, Mr. President. That would probably explain all this "voting" malarkey.

---

I take it Budja's dead?

Everyone: Yup!

Then I'm sure he wouldn't resist being investigated. Pat him down and see if he has anything. Meanwhile, keep going with your discussion.

Flip will come sometime tomorrow. Twilight continues.

dramonic, I informed you Twilights were 24 hours before we formally began our mob justice system. It's for your own good. Trust me.

I'm content with calling it a joke and moving on.

What is that?

Umm... we kind of found a bomb, and a note that said "Sorry we had to kill ______. We're just doing our job." I'd say that note was going to be pinned to their next victim.

Get the cover and let's safely detonate that bomb. Meanwhile, I think we're one step on our way to eradicating the evil infiltrators.

Budja, Mafia Goon, Lynched D1.

Good night! *turns off lights*

You have 72 hours to submit Night actions. If all are submitted sooner than that, we'll start sooner.

*BOOM*

A boom heard round the world, for that matter.

GNN- Second Explosion Erupts in Locked Complex

Police and witnesses report the sound of what was believed to be an explosives device detonating inside the Complex. Police are now unsure of the safety of all inside, and are uncertain as to whether or not the employees inside will make it out safely.

Police decline to comment on the progress of the situation at hand as technology experts continue to attempt to crack the encryption code blocking the security bug in the Complex's system.

Some family have camped outside for several hours on end now. The fate of their loved ones could still be at stake.

---

Oh God... not another explosion.

Taranski, Vanilla, Detonated N1

"Sorry we had to kill
Taranski
. We're just doing our job."

Let us begin another round of investigations, in that case. Day 2 starts now. 5 alive, 3 to lynch.

"At this point, let's just let them go through with whatever justice system they're using. I'll write up an address saying the situation appears controlled from within the Complex."

VOTECOUNT:

Not Voting (5): dramonic, Nikanor, saberwolf, Toro, YamiJoey

7 alive, 4 to lynch. Deadline is Nov. 24 at 7 PM EST.

Yami still remains nice and asleep and isn't responding to his prodding. The sound of the sirens don't seem to be phasing him.

He... is conscious, right?

(Really, I'd say the answer's no. I'm gonna get a jump on the replacement queue. If Yami beats the replacement, he'll keep his spot.)

*a figure emerges from the bunker. Sure as hell ain't YamiJoey*

PhaerieM?!? B-bu- Yami was down there, and, uhh...

Phaerie: Yeah, I've been hiding down here the whole time. My co-worker Yami had enough time to tell me that the threat seems controlled now, so I thought I'd come out now. Yami's completely unconscious, though.

Co-worker, huh? What the hell does that mean, co-employee or co-infiltrator?

PhaerieM replaces YamiJoey.

Yes, 5 alive, 3 to lynch. I'll change that in future votecounts. Thank you. :)

VOTECOUNT:
Nikanor (4): Everyone Else

Nikanor is immediately strung up by the neck and hung from the rafters of the Complex. Something falls off the body, first one of the Mafia's explosives which causes everyone to flinch and then... a note floats down while everyone looks at the bomb that dropped down. Toro grabs the note and immediately pockets it.

Well done. If that's a bomb, then I have reason to believe we've found our final infiltrator. Of course though, you still haven't found out that I'm the last scum, and there's no way to shut me down. Have fun spending the rest of your life in he- what the?

Toro, don't you dare unplug me! Saber, plug me back in right now! Dramonic? Phaerie? Aww, come on!

*fizzles out*

Suddenly, all the metal confinement doors open all at once in the Complex. Police are in there like a shot, no less breaking down the glass doors to get in. Immediately they swarm the place and take the four survivors into protective custody. The coroner immediately comes in and takes away the bodies of Budja, Taranski, and Nikanor. Soon though, the onlookers break through the police shield and swarm the Complex themselves. Immediately, the once low-activity Complex is now buzzing with life again, but with cameras and frenzied reporters, alongside family and friends who are now weeping for joy. The President, seeing all this, is also shedding a tear for those who survived courageously and the one innocent who died in the process.

Nikanor, Mafia Goon, Lynched D2

Doc dramonic
,
Cop Toro
, and
Vanillas PhaerieM, saberwolf, and the late Taranski
win!

Stand by for further analysis.

Night Actions:

Dramonic
protects
Nikanor
. (UHH...)
Toro
investigates
YamiJoey/PhaerieM
. (RECEIVES: "Innocent")
Nikanor
kills
Taranski
. (SUCCEEDS)

First off, a lot of that flavor I made up as I went. Hope that wasn't too obvious. ^_^

Toro claiming Vanilla out of nowhere was asking for trouble. Thankfully, there was no way that conflict was going to be an outright issue, but got a little worried when I saw him do that. You could easily get yourself lynched for lying and backtracking.

AndyTony quitting was a distasteful move. I'm surprised that saber wasn't any more astute to realize that it was because he was afraid of being tunnelled on.

On the massclaim, you all confirmed Toro and Dramonic since they had uncountered powerclaims. Since Toro investigated a claimed vanilla innocent, you basically had it sealed between either Nikanor or saberwolf. Then Nikanor claimed a towntell on saberwolf (as if the gambit wasn't inane enough) and... well that was the last of it.

Taranski, you really dug yourself a ditch throughout D1 by screwing around with everyone like that. I'm amazed Nikanor selected you for the kill, and would be eager to hear why.

All in all though, kudos for a perfect town win. The game was fun to mod, thanks all for not making my job a living hell. :)

Awesome. Thanks guys.

Now yeah, this basically happened the last time I played Bird (sans acronym) 7P, we hit scum D1, and then a vanilla fell N1. Cop investigated the right guy, and that led to probably one of the most stubborn-headed towns in history cruising to victory.

The way I see it is that town records are inherently in the losing column. Perhaps this setup has just enough town-weight to it to be good. If it's determined there's too much, diluting the setup to a 9P might allow a come-from-behind victory.

Oh! Other thing- the 24 hr Twilight rule, I got the vibe you all thought it was unnecessary. Would you advise I scrap it, maybe at least for small games?

Thought it was something people could use and thought there should be some concrete minimum so that people could be assured that this post-mortem discussion could take place for some period of time.

Seemed to be more annoying than useful, maybe it'd work better in larger games...
