In the wake of Bingle's disintegration, the House guests rapidly dispersed in shock--and maybe a bit of fear for their own safety. It seemed that the accusations of doctorhood were even more dangerous than the doctors themselves. No one had gone missing yet, which made some think that maybe there were no doctors after all.. maybe this was a game that their host was playing to turn guests on each other for a bit of sport?

Fun and Games was one such guest, who was determined to discover whether there were any labs in the House at all. If they could prove that the House was "normal," then maybe everyone would stop turning on each other and they would all be able to return home safely. Fun and Games decided to explore deeper into the House, thinking that any so-called labs would be well hidden. Their exploration led them up a series of staircases that should not have existed given the height of the House from the outside.

Finally, they found a door that seemed promising--made of heavy duty steel, with a sturdy lock. They attempted to pick the lock, but to no avail. And in the meantime, the clanging of metal against metal covered the footsteps of the figure sneaking up behind them.. a figure who proceeded to push Fun and Games off the stairs. Fun and Games screamed as they fell and kept falling, down into the inky abyss. They were never heard from again.

Fun and Games has been eliminated. They were a TEST SUBJECT.

Night 3 starts now. The deadline is paused until a replacement for PenguinPower is found, but you may submit Night actions.

Following the mysterious disappearance of Fun and Games, the House guests gathered a search party and resolved to find either Fun and Games' body, these so-called laboratories, or both. Several guests bravely volunteered to participate in the search and navigate the depths of the House. It was only a few minutes into this expedition that one of the guests noticed a strange burning smell coming from nearby. The search party followed the smell to an alcove tucked away behind one of the many twists and turns in the hallway, and what they found made all of them retch and gag. It was LavarManos' body, burned almost beyond recognition, mouth open in a horrible scream. From the looks of things, they had been burned alive.

LavarManos has died. They were a DOCTOR.

What was left of LavarManos' possessions clearly indicated the presence of a doctor in the House - a messenger bag near his body contained lab coat, gloves, and syringes filled with some kind of liquid. Either LavarManos had been a doctor, or someone was trying to make it seem that way. Either way, the guests now knew for certain that the danger within the House was all too real, and they were more cautious than ever.

The search party for Fun & Games continued on to the upper floor. It was on the upper landing that Flavor Leaf made his move. He hung back a few feet, withdrew a tranquilizer gun from his jacket, and aimed at the other guests. Unfortunately, he didn't see the mirror opposite the stairs that allowed everyone else to see what he was doing. They rushed him and used his own tranquilizer gun to subdue him, with the intention of interrogating him after he awoke. What they did not know was that Flavor Leaf was deathly allergic to the tranquilizer, and he began gasping and choking as soon as it was administered. Aghast, the guests watched as his face rapidly turned blue and his mouth started foaming. Moments later, he was dead on the floor.

Flavor Leaf has been eliminated. They were a DOCTOR.

The search party stared at Flavor Leaf's body lying still on the floor, his limbs askew from his dying seizure. Nobody moved for a few minutes, until someone suggested that they rejoin with the remaining survivors in the House. They were all too spooked to keep searching for Fun and Games, so there was no argument there.

Unfortunately, they were a bit lost. It took several tries through the maze of passageways and corridors to return to the entrance hall they had started in. (Seriously, how did the House contain so many more rooms inside than it should have? It should have been physically impossible to get that lost.) The scene the search party returned to was startling to say the least. SirCakez was threatening I Keep Siteflaking with what looked like a rocket launcher aimed at the latter's head. The guests around them were attempting to defuse the situation, but to no avail. SirCakez never intended to actually shoot the rocket launcher, but when the search party returned, he was so startled that the rocket went off anyway. I Keep Siteflaking's head exploded, showering everyone in the vicinity with a delightful soup of skull and brain. A stunned silence followed, SirCakez himself sinking to the floor in horror.

After the initial shock wore off, the guests noticed that the House no longer felt so evil. There was no Voice laughing in their heads or from around the corner. Not willing to trust their instincts, they continued to look at the others a bit suspiciously, but hope was slowly blooming. The minutes passed and no one made a move to attack anyone else. Could it be? Was their ordeal over?

"Wait, do you hear that?" Gamma Emerald said suddenly.

"Hear what?" replied the others.

"I mean, what do you not hear? The rain and the thunder is just gone."

The storm had begun to clear miraculously, dark clouds disappearing as quickly as they had come. The surviving guests slipped outside and gazed upwards at the newly revealed stars in wonder. A sense of calm settled over them as they realized they had escaped the House alive, albeit a bit traumatized. The world seemed almost... peaceful.

I Keep Siteflaking has been eliminated. They were a DOCTOR.

All DOCTORS are now dead. TEST SUBJECTS have met their win condition and won!

Some comments on the game:

This was the first game I've ever designed. Like the game it's based on, I think it's very swingy, but the intent was to create a mafia game that was fun/new/cool, and I hope that I achieved that. I apologize if the game didn't feel balanced or felt unfair in design, that was not my intent. Unfortunately I think with a setup like this, with so many variables, true balance may not really be achievable.

I'm definitely open to

constructive

criticism - I'd like to run more of these at some point in the future, and I am woefully inexperienced at setup balance. Some of the things that happened in this game I also didn't foresee, like people being confirmable on whether or not they had destroyed a lab, and that (among other things I didn't foresee) probably led to the game being more townsided than I had intended. Feedback is much appreciated.

yeah, I think these points are related to the "converting from Betrayal to a mafia game" issue - how do you account for the known traitor becoming an unknown faction? a lot of the rules on what was private versus public were my attempt to allow the doctors to hide better, so I'd also appreciate any feedback on that aspect as well (ie would it have been better if no stats were public? if you never knew who attacked you? if you never knew who gave you an item?)

@Bingle (and, well, everyone) the original plan was to run a series of these with similar mechanics (ie the room exploration, the night actions, etc) but with an entirely different Haunt and set of win conditions each time. In that sense, I think the mechanics themselves can be adjusted for balance, and separately the Haunt storyline can be more balanced as well. I’m looking for more specific feedback on the former and more general feedback on the latter. Here are the types of things I’d put in each category.

mechanics

- should stats be private?
- should the sender of items be private?
- should you not receive the identity of your attacker?
- should you not receive the results of your own actions?
- which dice roll(s) should you see the results of, if any?
- should rooms be harder to find or have a different distribution?
- should actions be unlimited or set to a different threshold?
- should stats have a different scale/limit?
- do stats need to be easier or harder to change?
- were items too overpowered?
- should the number of players be adjusted (eg 3v8)?

Haunt balance

- were labs too easy to destroy?
- should scum have been able to destroy them in order to prevent confirmability?
- should the distribution of labs have been higher?
- should the labs have been less difficult to activate?
- should doctors have had additional factional night actions? what type (ie extra attacks, extra lab activation, extra open actions for whatever they want, or some combination of those)?

Most of the Haunt balance questions won’t specifically pertain to the next Haunt, but the answers will help me get a sense of what feels balanced in this kind of setup and that can inform my decisions on how the next Haunt is designed, if that makes sense.

As mentioned, my goal was to stay as true to the original game as I could, which does mean that randomness is a large part of the game. I agree I think I could have included elements that reduced the negative impact from said randomness, but feedback as to what those elements could be would also be helpful.

yes, that is the plan, but it helps to get a sense of what seems balanced in this Haunt so I know what the next one should look like in order to feel balanced.

also, this wasn't intended to be a list of specific questions for feedback, but rather examples of the kind of feedback that's helpful! although of course all of the responses are helpful, I know I've missed things. so if you have other comments about other aspects of the game that pertain to either category, hit me. I think it's actually even more important if you have feedback that doesn't relate to any of the questions I posed, because those questions cover all the areas that I'm already thinking about for next time. if everyone is only answering these specific questions, then I'm bound to miss aspects that affected balance.

also I think F&G is the only one who mentioned looking up the lab names - they were all named after real people who performed human experimentation. I thought it was kind of a nifty easter egg to include
