It looked familiar as I was doing it, but I couldn't place it. Now I feel dumb.

There just aren't that many options for non-violent mafia imagery. Suits and Fedora's are about it. Could try and use some hard boiled imagery instead I guess. Not really sure what that gets you outside of a magnifying glass though.

Edit: Or not use any at all or something original of course, but that's for talented people.

Should be able to recolour or add a background for different skins. I think the knife and blood is the bigger issue.

Complaints about the gun in the old header were one of the reasons it was changed to something a lot more subtle.

I was having trouble identifying what was bothering me about the different fonts, and this is it.

i had the idea to make the f into a knife and the i look like a magnifying glass but haven't found a way to make it look good yet, if that's even a good idea

I think brainstorming should just be about throwing as much at the wall as you can and worrying about serious critiques after you've done that.

Could play with the idea of 1 letter 'hiding' among the others somehow? Use of negative space maybe.

Only other detective imagery I can think of are the boards with string, and I can't think of a way to make that work.

unfortunately that sounds a bit above my skill level when it comes to image manipulation, although if someone could make it work it sounds interesting

I think the hope is to have a single logo that is just colour shifted.

I like the concept. What if the i was wearing a small tie and cartoon sweating a little, as if under pressure?

This is the limit of my ability and is only intended for inspiration. With that said, I like how clean it is without additional details.

idk if i like the tie, it doesn't have much apparent symbolism to me

also i would really rather drop the tagline from the site altogether. "a mob has formed" is still pretty, well, problematic to me

Maybe we should start spitballing other possible taglines. I do think some of the logos look better with one than without.

I think it's ok to hold official things and things at the top of every page to a higher standard than things in individual games. One reason why I've been trying to avoid violent imagery and don't really like NSG's blood splatter despite liking her font more than shaft.ed's. The font difference could be a product of size.

Edit: Reck's slash is abstract enough to be fine though imo.

Her magnifying glass is much better (unsurprisingly). I'm not sure I'm a fan of the font, but I think I may have just become overly attached to art deco fonts. Probably need to look away from this for a while and come back with new eyes.

I think the magnifying glass is about as complex as you want to go. It might be too much, if anything.

I really like the magnifying glass; I don't think it's too complex, especially if it looks simplistic.

What are people's thoughts on the m being capitalized or lowercase?

The issue isn't the complexity of the shape of the magnifying glass itself, which hits a good note. It's with it being overlayed on the text. It definitely increases the clutter/hurts the legibility.

Anyway, I don't dislike it, I just think brainstorming additional ideas is still good, and that those shouldn't be focused on designs that are more complex.

Changing the color slightly should be trivial if its needed to make the logo work.

Sorry, I meant of the mafBlack skin. If its background color needs to change slightly to make a logo work more consistently across all the skins or etc.

Yes I realized that after comparing it to the second one, but I also thought it would be hard for randos on the street to understand it. I was thinking of something that would make for a better t-shirt.

I think the magnifying glass logo is the best one so far, but it's also the one that's seen the most iterations. I'm not good enough to do it myself, but if those that are did more iterations of some of the other designs I think it would be a more even comparison.

ok not to start discourse in this thread but it's really peeved me how some people post only to criticize designs (made for FREE with a VOLUNTEER'S time and effort) with no constructive suggestions at all. if you want a logo designed exactly to your specifications you can either 1. make it yourself or 2. HIRE a designer to make it for you, not neg your peers just because some small aspect of it isn't perfect

If you don't want criticism, pm your design to mith instead of posting it in the brainstorming thread

Their complaint wasn't against criticism, it was about a lack of constructive criticism. "x is bad" vs "maybe try y", or actually trying y yourself.

You don't need to be a graphic designer to say you don't like something

If the complaint is about the colour of something, its easy to try out different colours yourself. Not putting in any effort is disrespecting the effort of those that are.

i dont think a shadow will work because
1) it muddies the legibility especially at zoomed out levels
2) if you're going to start adding in light effect, then you kinda have to also account for the action of the lens in the magnifying glass, which will be super complication

I actually had a lensing effect in my original one, don't think anyone noticed because it was too subtle, but being more aggressive with the refractive index made it unreadable.

Cutting it off might work ok in instances where there is a natural boundary (like the top of the site banner) but its likely to be used in other places, as listed in the OP.

Looking at amazons logo really makes me want to try to make the magnifying glass one less cluttered.

Edit: like making the F wrap around the top of the glass and the a tuck under it to the right. That would take custom character work though.

I'm not actually a fan of how it looks or how it would translate to other icons. I just try to throw something together when I have an idea and as long as its not a complete disaster, post it.
