Firstpick Imperial Barbarians is pretty awesome until Troll convinces everyone you need to die. >______>
Merchant Hobbits and Spirit Barbarians are also solid.
Firstpick depends on what you get. Mounted Pixies was a good idea until the Gypsies happened. Barbarians are always a strong start, and anything that's high in numbers and has SPIRIT.
Anywho I love Smallworld and while I don't think I'll ever win a game I love it greatly. All the race/role combos etc."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

Thoughts/comments/whatnot? Considering getting it for the house since we watch it as a house and it'd be something cool to do on GoT sundays.
Does the number of players affect the game experience?
Aka, 6 means fullhouse but does that make the game crazylong?
Thanks in advance."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

Race for the Galaxy would be a good one.In post 627, Chevre wrote:So reading through the thread and seeing Reck's earlier complaints about TTR, I think that exactly encompasses what my group needs: a game where no matter whose turn it is, everyone is at least somewhat involved. For example, in Catan even when it isn't your turn, the dice might give you resources to ponder, and trades will happen, and all this in addition to possible building on the board. Looking at my list of potential buys, I think Puerto Rico and Dominion encapsulate this, but what about 7 Wonders?
I was about to buy Carcassonne after pondering FOREVER with the long list, but after this realization I'm definitely not so certain. I think we'll end up playing some games tonight maybe, so I'll see how a game like Hey, That's My Fish goes before I make another purchase.

RED, as described above, kept outbreaking and causing chain reactions so about 80% of the Pacific Rim was fallen (except Australia of course). Spoiler: Yo'lisha
We all got attached to our characters, and we turned our Medic into some Paratrooper Medic who could remote heal so that was amazing. Black was MERS+, Blue was Syphillus Maximus, I can't recall 100% what Yellow was but something to do with Corona.
You definitely had a better containment plan than we did. We basically walled off the entirety of the Pacific Rim (save Australia) and just let it go to hell.
Spoiler: Octoberish
Yeah you did way better than we did. China, Korea, Japan, were all fallen. Our first November game was a loss given the game screwed us by outbreaking 3/4 times in Atlanta, our starting location, in the first two rounds.
Spoiler: September to end
I'd still play the game again with a different group. Loads more fun than normal Pandemic, loads more fun than Risk Legacy. Even if we had a keg for Risk Legacy."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

I also had the Medic with that same upgrade. We played with three most of the time and even then it wherever the Medic was he pretty much held. So Europe and N. Africa were spared for the majority of the game. UntilSpoiler:
I also own and love Catacombs. The Cavern of Soloth is basically a must-buy if you love the game as the extra monsters/heroes are amazing.
Will have to listen sometime.
Have you guys played Vast: The Crystal Caverns? I own it but haven't yet gotten it to the table with any more than 2."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

Never played that one because I don't like that scenario.
I don't like most of the scenarios that The Long Night added, but that's just me.
I imagine you rush-searching as hard as you can and then move everyone back to the colony at the same time.
Otherwise it consumes too many resources over many days."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

I agree with most of this.In post 2589, xRECKONERx wrote:I would also say that in Ameritrash game, the "theme" wins out over the mechanics.Like, Betrayal At House on the Hill... Ameritrash. Heavily themed, and the theme is most of the charm. Same with Arkham Horror, Battlestar Galactica, Cosmic Encounter.Eurogames are way more "strategic". I don't even think Eurogames have to be particularly complex, it's more that they're all about the tactics/strategy and less about the journey.
Ameritrash and strategic are not mutually exclusive - ameritrash game mechanics serve the theme, and the theme is a key selling point.
Eurotrash is almost more like having a setting than a theme. Most Eurogames have similar mechanics such as worker placement or area control which are more in a setting - you play a worker placement game in a medieval village/prehistoric tribe/castle under siege.
I definitely tend to favor Ameritrash games but the occasional Euro is also good. Personally, I get minimal enjoyment out of playing a game to master a mechanic, rather than tell a story even if I'm bad at the game itself."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

I'd love to hear more words about Mystic Vale because my impression is basically what RECK said - it seems like a cool gimmick but that's really it.
Re: Panzer's List:
7 Wonders Duel is great for 2-players. Highly recommended.
Mechs v Minions IIRC is a pre-order at the moment since the first wave sold out but, yeah, looks superb.
I've heard a lot of mixed things about TIME Stories. Yes, its highly innovative and unique but you wind up playing the same levels over and over again until you get enough pieces of the puzzle to move on. Never pulled the trigger on that one because of the forced replayability deal. There's a review on BGG that explains it well enough.
Tokaido is brilliant, even with 2. I also highly recommend the Crossroads expansion to make your vacation have even more options/etc."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

I think a key for Catacombs is realizing that the bad guy is both bad guy and DM in that he largely controls how difficult (and fun) the levels are as he designs them.

You can get the new version (Catacombs and Castles) that's more 1v1 in a single big room (each player gets 2-4 heroes each) for around $75 USD being a late backer for their kickstarter and get that in March/April, but yeah if it's not $40-$60 it miiiight not actually be worth it for you for a while.
@reck- tbf we did play the stun monsters pretty wrong. i basically stunlocked one or two of you when I wasn't supposed to be able to do that.

I *think* they might be changing it soon, but if you're stunned you flip over your character to the blue side, and you can't move them next turn. At the end of the enemy'snextturn, you flip it back over and are in-stunned, which basically means you lose a turn but prevents you from being chain-stunned multiple turns in a row."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

Not gonna lie, pretty jealous. In post 2722, PJ. wrote:Colosseum
Before the reprint this thing was pretty hard to find.
How'd you like it? Was there a lot of downtime between turns? Did you find you were able to build/show the attractions you wanted to with a decent amount of work, or was it more finding stuff to match what youcoulddo?
Have you played any of the Co-op with a defector games?Panzer wrote:I found I'm not sure I enjoy co-op games(my sister also doesn't enjoy co-ops much).
I have friends who aren't keen on the co-op part but will play defector games for the paranoia/tension/chance to feed someone else to the zombies.
And I gotta say, if you're after the "one person doing a dance" feeling, betrayinga whole table of people and watching their faces as they lose is the best dance.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who cringes whenever this thread goes on about how either of these is great.Panzer wrote:Least favorite games so far have been Carcassone, Catan
We like Sushi Go (and Sushi Go Party). Fun little card game that has a ton of replayability.

I love Shadows over Camelot.Panzer wrote:I forgot, I had played Shadows over Camelot at a game night, and that IS pretty fun, but the 1st time our traitor joined late, and the second time our traitor was the only new player at the table so didn't get to be particularly traitorous.
Definitely a great game as either faction. I find that the sweet spot is somewhere in 5-6. I've played with 8 a couple times and it can take awhile to go around turns, but there's no real downtime since stuff is always happening.
I recommend the expansion too, but won't elaborate on that unnecessarily.
Dead of Winter is another good co-op with a betrayer.
Playing with the betrayer variant is a blast.
Getting exiled was actually one of my best experiences with the game.
Awesome, this is great to hear.Panzer wrote:The choices for your the first phase of the a round are pretty simple, buy some shit, roll the dice, move the mans, next player. That moves directly into an auction phase, which is obviously interactive, and then the trade phase, which is again interactive. I felt that, I *mostly* was able to make actions that were at least semi-desirable, with obviously a little changes of plan based on what bigger shows other people purchased(people can't purchase the same show from the show menu). So with a large portion of the game being interactive, you're never waiting around, dick in hand, for your turn. I really REALLY like this game man. I think it's my favorite, and I'm definitely pre-ordering the non-kickstarter reprint.
These were some of the concerns but you addressing them was great.
I mean obviously people can be dicks to each other and get resources other players need but actually being able to do the things you want to is pretty huge.
I've heard mixed things about Specter Ops. Read a review that basically said its a mediocre hidden movement game and its cousins (Fury of Dracula, Whitechapel) do it better.
Been wanting to play Robinson Crusoe and Arcadia Quest for awhile.
Finally got around to playing Illuminati and that was a riot."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

I've played it twice and it was a resounding 'meh' both times. I'd give it another go, though, which I wouldn't for Carcassone and Catan. In post 2736, Chickadee wrote:I'm like the only person I know that doesn't like Sentinels.
Sure there's an overall goal, but the individual goals provide tension and story-telling opportunities. Sure, if we look at it from a sheer mechanical standpoint all it really does is make the game harder and provide "cover" for traitorous actions. But a good traitor won't need cover - they can tank most any game in a single round (or back-to-back turns) with some planning.Faraday wrote:Sure you're somewhat dependant on the colony goal but given the individual win-cons Dow doesn't feel like a co-op.
I appreciate the story-telling options that come from the extra goals."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-

There's only ever one traitor at most.Panzer wrote:I haven't played Dead of Winter, but I don't really like the concept of everyone having to act traitory to fulfill their side missions. And I believe that in Dead of Winter that there can also be multiple traitors? Also I don't understand there being a traitor in the first place from a thematic perspective. Why would anyone side with the zombies? That's weird. Again, haven't played it, but it just has a lot of question marks.
And you don't really have to act traitor-like for most of them, though there are multiple ways of doing things. You might have to hold a certain number of a certain commodity of cards in your hand at the end of the game (Food, Fuel) which is certainly easier to pull off than others. A friend of mine seems to have unnatural luck in drawing the 'you win if X characters have died', so yes, they could go peacefully and hope to have people die of natural causes (read: zombies) but for my friend he just took a switchblade to all of my characters and it was actually great fun in the end since we both won on our own terms despite him killing literally every character I had.
And you don't (generally) win with the zombies as the traitor. (Though there is *one* Traitor Objective that's basically YOU ARE A MAD SCIENTIST so YMMV.)
Everyone wants to survive and most traitor objectives aren't allied with the zombies, but rather can use the zombies as another tool for their plans.
I'm also interested in Mechs/Minions.
Mice and Mystics is a fun dungeon-crawler whose heart really is in the story. Combat's pretty simple for a dungeon-crawler, and it has a great theme in that you are all mice running around doing dungeon-crawler stuff like bashing bad guys (read: roaches, rats, centipedes, etc.) gathering loot (read: mouse-style look like thimble helmets, button shields, and the all-mighty toothpick), and exploring the castle.Panzer wrote:Has anyone here played Mice and Mystics, The Grizzled, or Aeon's End?
I recommend the game.
I'd almost recommend it as your starter dungeon-crawler as well.
I do, however, recommend becoming very familiar with the rules before you play, and instead of teaching every player everything there is to know, just teach them the basics they need to know to play the game and you basically be the rules guru. Makes playing easier, especially with newer players.
While I haven't actually started the second game/expansion (Downwood Tales), I own it and it is amazing.
The Grizzled is hard. Incredibly hard at first. But this is part of its charm. Its a tough co-op game where the war isn't presented as some thing to be won, but rather survived. And it delivers on its promises."This is the true face of a man who plays paladin."-
