I loved Awakening. Although it may have not been the strongest gameplaywise it was still solid and the character development in support conversations more than made up for it. I'm replaying it for maybe the fifth time now and still discovering new stuff about characters.
They don't make any sense in the (Admittedly already-awful) narrative. They aren't broken like in Awakening. But, not just those things, but they also completely kill the pacing of the game and give you this giant mess of units you'll never use. Like, I never felt bored doing the child paralogues in Awakening but I guess that's because the game actually tried a little to incorporate it a little and also the game was slow and meandering, it made sense you could go bumblefuck off to somewhere else if needed. Here, it's just tonally inconsistent that you can go kill bandits in Hoshido while you literally just broke through into Nohr's capital or whatnot. The fact all the missions aren't in the slightest interesting and tend to have 'Awakening Syndrome' also doesn't help.
The children themselves are actually rather interesting characters(more than the last game's, I daresay), but my god I wish I didn't play through them. It killed every bit of enthusiasm I had for finishing both games now. I guess I'll wait for Revelation next week and get to chapter 23 there, too.
Oh yeah the other thing I don't like with modern FE is the maps in the lategame are just too big and sprawling. Sometimes, scaling down the level helps a lot to mix up the gameplay experience. Paradoxically, I actually found Birthright better in this so far. Missions like Chapter 18 or 20 were a very helpful change from the usual 'giant open field' maps that the mid-lategames have had recently. Not that I don't mind those open fields, but you need to mix it up sometimes...
Some of Awakening's kids were brilliant (i.e. Owain and Inigo)
