I was visiting some friends this weekend who are all into Magic and after playing a couple games with their spare decks I was hooked. I got the red/black core 2015 pre-made and a few boosters. Probably going to be a long time, if ever, before I will be interested in playing at local tourneys or anything but I'm pretty psyched about this hobby and trying to get my wife into it.

How many percentage points of viability does a mono black or orzhov deck drop by not being willing to pay for mutavaults and thoughtsiezes? I realize that without knowing the local meta or having a decklist this is a largely useless conjecture.

Right - I fully understand how good those cards are and unfortunately they're the only ones on my hypothetical decklist I can't really justify paying for at $60-80 for a playset of TS or more for mutavaults right now.

Yeah I might just space out thoughtseize purchases and hope for the best with the new rotation - definitely the best monetary decision.

I got this http://940ee6dce6677fa01d25-0f55c912997 ... 112136.jpg for $2 at a local used bookstore. I didn't even realize that a bunch of the cards in it were just randos from Onslaught someone threw in there when they sold it to the store in addition to the 7th edition starter set. One of those cards is a Wooden Foothills. Pretty cool.

If my wife has veridian longbow equipped on a typhoid rat and taps it to do the one damage and kill a creature of mine, can I use an instant to destroy the longbow and avoid the damage? Or is damage already on the stack (this is the explanation I found googling)?
Also, does her equipping the bow give me priority to then destroy it before it can be tapped?

Godz hasn't posted in a few years. Guess I won't be able to harass him about his enchantress cosplay as a means of discrediting his scumread on me at some point.

I played Friday Night Magic once and the people there were all the worst kind of nerd sterotypes. Not much space, and everyone was fat and smelly or 12 and obnoxious.
EDIT: NOT THAT I AM NOT FAT AND OBNOXIOUS BUT I TRY NOT TO BE.
I've only been to one FNM and I had two cool opponents and one fat, ponytail'd virgin type who, before I played his netdecked devotion to black (which was the most played deck at the time) he said something like, "huh huh I feel bad for you for having to play against this deck bro huhuhuhuh" or some variation of it three times during the match. I'll go back one day when I can afford a few decent cards and exact my revenge.

It depends on what format you're getting into. You can spend less than $100 on a deck that can consistently beat people at most FNMs in a standard tourney.
If you don't want to do that or dont know how much time you'll have to devote to it, you can just do drafts for $10-15 a pop and try to build a deck if you get good draws from those then fill in the spaces.

he looks down, sees if its a land or nonland, then puts 5 or 6 or 7 of those at the top of the deck while "shuffling" so you either get 5-7 lands or 5-7 nonlands

There was a big uproar on r/magictcg because the cheaters had been getting more lenient punishments than the buttcrack guy. I wonder if that's causing them to give out 3-4 year bans

I'm still a noob at Magic but it seems like Mono-red should be pretty strong against the typical Abzan midrange decks. It can consistently win before a Sorin or Rhino is in the picture with enough burn based on some testing I've done.
