To be honest, there is not a lot of expectation of privacy near the spawn area. If you give about 10 or 20 blocks distance, I don´t think anyone will complain if you build near the spawn. If you go to more secluded areas you might want to find your own spot
The rules is basically common sense - don´t take things from other people, don´t break other people´s buildings, and that is about it.
Oh, and don´t leave floating trees around, please!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

Oh, I built that one, thanks! It was supposed to be the central for the rail lines, but we only have like 5 or 6 stations.
You guys write the coordinates to your houses in the thread, so we can add them to the billboard!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

Spawn point seems to be a pit. Is it supposed to be like that?
>_> errrr.... It has been like that for a while. Since the area within ~30 blocks of spawn can only be modified by mods. Someone has to go and use their modly powers to fix that blight.....
I'll around to it this weekend. Promise. For reals...
I think it won't matter once I build a house and sleep in a bed though right?
You should wake up on a bed after you slept in one once. It doesn't matter that you didn't craft the bed. The fact that you are still spawning at the original spawn point is... strange.
Also, we have the /home and /sethome commands set for all players. If you use "/sethome" it will set a personal teleport point in your current location. If you use /home you will teleport to that point.
OK, so when I leave the pit first place a find is a small room with some water in it, and a bed, and a craft table, furnace, and some storage chests? I think it also has a glass green house with some sugar growing? Just wondering if this was someones house and who it belonged to.
That's is somebodies home, I just don't remember whose. I don't think anyone will have a problem with you sleeping in their beds, just don't take their stuff, and fix anything that creepers break (or ask here for someone to fix it). If you want, on the other side of the bay near the spawn (near the domed home), there is a wooden home with a tall wooden tower - that is the public housing.
Next day I wandered around and found the spawn guest house. After I left it I lost it... and I'm not sure how to actually get there from the spawn point
Lol, it is on the other side of the bay. Just follow the tall wooden tower.
I think the plan for this evening is I'm going to spawn in, stay around the spawn point trying to gather resources for the basics, then pick a direction and head that way for X days travel until I find a neat place to call home. Oh, and if I'm feeling pretty good with how things are going, I might build a spawn point gazeebo or something nicer to spawn in than a pit, unless you guys have the pit to spawn in for a reason?
No reason, but you need mod powers to alter the spawn point (maybe that is the reason no one has changed it until now )
Oh last question, how do I change the appearance of my character from the default?
You can upload image files for your profile in the minecraft.net website. I think there is a "profile" page there for you to do that. Also, there are some programs in the wiki that help you with the editing of the image file.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

Recently, I have noticed that mobs seem to be less common. Someone in Reddit seems to have found a possible explanation.
Nothing we can do about it ATM, but food for thought.

Hey Guys!
I have made some maps of our server. These are just maps of the areas I have explored tonight. If your construction is not on the map, let me know the coordinates and I´ll go there!
http://claus.castelodelego.org/minecraft/MS.png -- 2D map
http://claus.castelodelego.org/minecraft/MS3.png -- 3D map, 5MB! please be gentle to my server, don´t hotlink this. Also, this map is chopped to save a bit on bandwidth, so landmasses may be closer than they actually are.
Have fun!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

Is the sanctuary there, but not visible? Or is the sanctuary not even there? I'm using a mod that "records" maps from multi-player servers, so if I didn't get close to the sanctuary, it could simply not show up.

That was the idea when I started building it.
Anyone know how to make a still water moat?
Source blocks that are surrounded on all four sides by solid blocks or source water blocks will not form currents. An empty block surrounded on two sides by source water blocks will become a source water blocks.
What this means is that you want to make a "infinite water supply" as a 2x2 water puddle, 1 deep, somewhere near the moat:
XX
XX
If you take a bucket of water from any of those blocks, it will be instantly refilled. Use this to fill your moat with source blocks in every square. Just make sure your moat is 1 deep when you fill it, and there will be no currents. After the moat is filled, you can dig deeper.
That is the gist of it, there are other ways to make a currentless moat, but I think this is the simplest.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

I don't know how far I made it, but the last thing I expected to see down there were 2 creepers right on the tracks and me not knowing how to stop a minecart.......................
That was.... unexpected.
I thought the cart was fast enough (and the areas around it were lit enough), that mobs spawning in the area wouldn´t have enough time to climb the tracks. Seems I was wrong.
I´ll fix the tracks in the weekend, and add some fences to the cave openings.

DonJosh -- Notch has released an ¨official¨ (pre-release) version of 1.8. He doesn´t care about the leaking that much.
Converting the world from 1.7 to 1.8 will not be that bad. The limit between the old and new chunks will have some annoying weird walls, but some people may find them ¨alluring¨.
Villages are funny. Abandoned mineshafts are really alluring - long, reveal a lot of minerals. I heard some amazing things about abandoned underground fortresses (libraries! and more!) but haven´t found one yet myself. Endermen are cute. Running is okay. New blocks YAY YAY!
That said, it has a few game stopping bugs:
- Nether with tree leaves seem to crash the game (I have not verified it myself)
- furnaces turning on or off crash the game. I have tried dozens of different video settings, but it is consistent (changing the video setting also crashes the game). I´d wait for the ¨official¨ 1.8 before converting the server.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

MME, I heard you like bays:
There is an ocean on the other side of those two spires - I just have to build the channel.
Also, I found a mod the fixes the furnace problem. Although jeb´s tweet says that they are currently fixing the pre-18 release, and then will release the official 18.
Cheers!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

UA > Strange, I haven't had memory issues yet. But Jeb has posted a list of things he has already fixed, and memory leaks are among them.
On other news, after 1.8 is properly released and we update our server, UA might consider using this:

A tool to smooth out the crazy edges that appear between versions.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

There is still a lot of speculation out there.
In post 1430, Rhinox wrote:Also, apparently they're like dungeons in that the seed determines where they spawn and is the same for every new world created with the same seed.
I have seen at least one thread in reddit where this was shown to be false (two worlds generated with the same seed, where one had a stronghold in a given location, and the other hadn´t). I guess we need to wait and see.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

Man, you are unlucky with seeds. Try the seed I'm playing with: "Vlachia"
You will spawn near two spires between a small sea an an inland lake, a large plain to the south and some amazing mountains to the south. In one of the mountains there is a giant lava fall coupled with a giant waterfall.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

P.S. I tried the seed: mountainclimber last night, hoping to get some mountains
Man, every seed seems awesome with the new biome code.
Also I've notived that friendly mobs are very abundant, but rumor has it they spawn once per chunk, don't despawn, and don't respawn after you kill them.
Can you link to that discussion? I would love some serious SCIENCE about the rules of mob generation in 1.8. Some things that I know:
* Hostile mobs do respawn. Friendly mobs SEEM to respawn, but I'm not sure.
* Once I sheared a sheep, went far away enough for the block to unload from the memory, returned after a few minecraft days, and when I returned the sheep was still there, sheared
* I haven't seen a sheep spawn in my city in days.
One last thing - I've read its possible to delete old chunks in established worlds so that they can be regenerated with 1.8 code - possibly we can delete all chunks that haven't been developed in so that we won't have to go as far to find the 1.8 good stuff?
I think we could "crop" the existing world to the smallest developed areas - but we can't simply erase all of the undeveloped areas, else we would have big gaping holes in the world. If UA is busy I wouldn't mind doing the work, I think I'll have some free time in the weekend. I would even try my hand at that "smoothing" tool they published in Reddit.
Even if we completely abandon the old biomes for the new ones (I don't think I would do that -- would probably start building more in the tundra, though) -- I think it is nice to keep the old buildings around for archiving purposes.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

I'm not even sure how I'd go about doing that. I mean, I have a nice map and everything, but it's not entirely clear (to me) what goes where.
Basically we would need to do this:
0- Make a copy of the save directory.
1- Open this copy in a MC world edit program, and delete the areas we don´t want anymore.
2- Use the program that calculate the borders to calculate the borders of the old world
3- Visit these borders to generate 1.8 chunks there
4- Use the smoothing program to smooth the borders.
5- put the edited save back where the original one was.
Because of 2, you´d better send me the save (or a link to the save) before anyone goes a-exploring too much, so the borders can be calculated correctly (if we are going to do this, of course)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

Well, Stone brick does not require more stone than regular smooth stone (4 smooth stone produce 4 stone bricks). And Clay is not rare anymore past 1.8. But these things won't be noticed by people who don't play minecraft, so other than that the poster is pretty awesome.
Maybe you could have some simple buildings in your background?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-

MME Wonderful!
UT: Well, you can always use the slime finder to find slime chunks, and build a slime room around there... I managed to find a few that way.
Anyway... notch was thinking about making the default moon round. That cannot be! The square sun/moon is one of the most charming things in Minecraft!
He set up a pool for players to leave their opinions:

Slimes only spawn in certain chunks. The slime finder is a tool that, given the world seed and a set of coordinates, tell you which chunks will spawn slimes. So you just build a large, lit room under Y = 20 in these chunks, and eventually slimes will spawn there. It still takes a while, I suggest building a waiting room nearby, and trying to find 2-3 slime chunks near each other. Remember that no mob will spawn closer than 24 blocks from you.
I don't have the link with me right now, but if you google "minecraft slime finder" you should find it.

I'm most excited about the enchantments. I was a bit skeptical about the experience, but this system of using the experience to power up breakable tools is great. The variety of enchantments is also really nice. Check out the "axe of silk touch" (when mining a block, gives you that exact block back -- glowstone, webs, redstone/lapis/diamond ore yay!)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVmAG0RXmo-
