They don't print free dredge enablers anymore, so modern dredge plays some lands in order to play their loot/rummaging spells and get their engine going

I don't think historic is lower-power enough for looting to be fine, especially with phoenix in the format and arcanist already being a playable deck

Hand fixers are fun but can be inherently problematic, there might be a way to keep them all legal but it's much harder

I'm curious what people think about this card in standard, I was debating about it with my friends. Seems great to me

When I think about tapping a land to put a +1/+1 counter and being allowed to do it most turns that seems exciting, but when I think about playing a wastes that says "your instants and sorceries have kicker(1): put a +1/+1 counter on target creature" then my mind instead says that's not good enough.

I can see this, I guess I'm envisioning it being good when you have to use a removal spell in your aggressive/midrange deck and it forces you to play off-curve, the more I think about it the narrower its applications are though. The types of decks it's good in probably tend to lose to emergent ultimatum (although if there's a good humiliate deck this card probably goes in it)

What format where cheap-activation manlands are legal in are you envisioning for this card

Faceless haven is pretty widely played but it's expensive to activate

In my aggressive deck making my creatures bigger so I can kill my opponent is pretty much good enough, they also get to dodge heartless act now. It just needs to be an aggressive deck that plays a bunch of instant/sorceries and is < 3 colors which isn't really a thing

Playing a colorless land in 2 color aggro is probably fine? You could up your land count for it too.

I was thinking the mono color aggro decks don't play enough instant/sorceries, but it looks like most mono red decks play rimrock knight (and frost bite and bonecrusher) so maybe? Playing boulder rush at sorcery speed is unexciting, but if you have embercleave maybe you don't care

I was thinking about mono white which is the other mono color aggro deck in standard (which only has 2-3 giant killer). Generally I'd expect mono green decks to not have many instants/sorceries either but maybe mono black ones would yeah.

Wrt boulder rush: you're right, you're giving up something no matter what but at least you can choose.

My friend was arguing with me that it's not worth cutting snow lands for faceless haven in order to play hall of oracles though, which doesn't seem right to me but she's much better at magic than me so idk.

Tbf faceless haven seems very good against rogues but the above decks are the closest things there are to midrange, and in those matchups I'd much rather be able to pump my creatures and get through blockers/kill them faster with embercleave. There's no "pile of threats and removal spells" deck.

Yeah I guess, the other thing is that you can't afford to have games where you only draw the removal half of your deck when the ultimatum deck is in the format and will kill you on 7 lands if that happens. Standard is really about building your engine or killing your opponent before they get theirs online.

I've seen two life treated as roughly equivalent to one mana in a number of cases. Like those I think Lorwyn/Shadowmoor special casting costs. That was some time ago though.

it's hard to get a handle on archetypes just looking at the cards for me, i'm gonna see what limited level ups has to say. also i plan on drafting a lot cause i have a lot of gold and gems stockpiled so i'll report my experiences

uw seems pretty nice to me so far. like milling over/discarding some of the disturbed cards seems really nice, and they seem like good cards anyway. and devoted grafkeeper seems really really nice.

like Rite of Oblivion seems like you can only play it if you're making enough zombie tokens or 1/1 human tokens to justify it, just think about how much better Dire Tactics from Ikoria is than that

don't really agree. it feels to me like there's gonna be a lot of decayed tokens floating around, also flashback is huge and ikoria was a super powerful set anyway. rite seems super good to me

first impressions from what I've been hearing: esper colors are way better than the rest, especially b and w. ub is the best archetype, and being aggressive with decayed synergies is very effective.

first impressions from me: format feels pretty grindy, but life totals matter. uw and ugx grindy decks seems good. ur sucks. lunarch veteran is absurdly good for a common.

i've been enjoying historic brawl lately, i like that i don't know the meta

building around commanders is also a lot of fun

i play some commander but i enjoy multiplayer less

yeah it's definitely dependent on the people you're playing with, even with a good playgroup it's too often kingmaker-y for me.

one deck that i've played against a couple times in historic brawl is illuna which has omniscience as the only permanent in their deck so they basically win if they resolve their commander. i'm empty handed with a ghostly pilferer in play and 5 mana open, and op casts illuna. i draw silundi vision and find a counter spell. the next time they cast their commander i responded with mystic subdual on the thing they mutated onto. that felt pretty good

have just learned of alchemy so am reinstalling arena with hopes of outer limiting for next few days

there is a chance they try to continuously balance this format and update cards every two weeks so!

life // death is such a strange card. one half is pretty much just a downside, and the other half is a strong reanimation spell that's not quite good enough to see play anywhere. it's not legal in modern (and i'm wondering if it would see play as persist 5-6 in the reanimator decks), and in legacy there are just better options. in edh the higher-powered decks have better options, and budget players are unlikely to know of its existence.

imo commander is an absurdly good format when decks are roughly evenly matched, but 70+% of commander games ive played have had quite a large deck power level gap for various reasons.

presumably you're playing this in a shrine deck, so you're playing this with a bunch of other cards that don't care about mill. so either your deck is built around this card specifically or you're playing a regular damage card in your infect deck basically. what?

plus if they kill this then they're probably not getting milled out, so you were actually giving them an advantage that whole time...i really don't get it

The shrines are designed for limited. People win from mill from permanents that mill 2 cards per turn all the time when there are forty cards in the starting deck. You could raise some questions about whether incidental mill is fun in limited, but I'd be shocked if the blue shrine isn't draftable.

i'd be shocked if it was at all playable in limited honestly. limited games just don't last ~13 turns anymore.

also i think jordan just dislikes the conflict of mill vs damage, it's like either you should probably focus on milling by attacking with creatures or the mill card is the most important card and the game revolves around whether your opponent can remove it

i like it for commander (a couple commons fit in my decks actually), as for the other formats i havent thought about them much and would have to play with the cards, i think it has us slightly more excited than the average set

thats a draft deck. the steelbreaker worked well for us in that deck, but it's a limited sample of course and we heard others talking about how it gets chump blocked too easily and you want to keep your curve low for experimental synthesizer in your red decks.

I don't think the wall deck is the best example of the format allowing you to devalue tempo since it plays a 1 mana creature that blocks 2s and a two mana creature that trades with 3s.
