If you ask, WotC will mail a bunch of starter decks to a unit of soldiers, free if charge. I'm not sure if you need to be stationed abroad to qualify, or whether you are stationed abroad, but it's something you could look into if that ever lines up. It's a special support the troops thing they do. (The complexity of those decks are generally beginner level)

My LGS has reopened, but, uh, I think it'd be reckless of me to go.

I should probably be going to a magic focused forum to ask but
Is the new RW cathartic reunion gonna justify a color change for modern dredge? Probably right?

It's similar to ponder and preordain being banned in higher power formats and allowed in lower power formats. Hand fixer effects are stronger in more powerful formats.
Shriekhorn+faithless looting+5 lands was an easy keep even though it doesn't actually enable anything on its own because half the power was being an amazing hand fixer card, whether you were playing a graveyard deck or not.
I kind of wish they would ban payoffs instead of hand fixers because I think hand fixers are fun (when they cost mana I don't know that we need Once Upon a Time to be a thing)

When I think about tapping a land to put a +1/+1 counter and being allowed to do it most turns that seems exciting, but when I think about playing a wastes that says "your instants and sorceries have kicker(1): put a +1/+1 counter on target creature" then my mind instead says that's not good enough. The shimmering grotto mama filter is not much better than nothing, lands that require you to go down aana to get the correct color generally haven't performed well.
I don't expect it to be playable but I might be wrong.

It's a shame they couldn't make it "activate this ability only outside of combat when the stack is empty" so that it could be used with instants better. But there's the cardinal rule against acknowledging the stack exists on a card.

I kiA deck manlands with cheap activations makes it a lot more attractive since it erodes the tension between having creatures and having instants and sorceries both to make the card good. And some manlands are kind of unfair if you augment them and they keep ducking sorcery speed removal.

It's way too low power for anything but standard so I'm hoping standard has one I don't know of or one gets printed into the format.
If you just removed your opponent's biggest creature in an aggressive deck how likely are you to need the +1/+1 to be favorable against blocks D:

Dropping a mana for the shimmering grotto ability isn't very aggressive. This might actually be at its best in monocolor aggro so that you don't have to use the second ability at all.

Yes, a colorless land can be fine in 2 color aggro as well. The fewer the colors the better is the point.
I actually expect monocolor decker to play slightly more instants and sorceries absent incentives is what I was thinking about, like the red stuff. I didn't think about it hard enough because when monoblie plays counter spells those don't work so it's more specifically just mono red. Maybe monoblack with more available instants and sorceries than usual.
You don't have to play boulder rush at sorcery speed! The play pattern can be attack with two goblin tokens, wait to see which one gets blocked, boulder rush the blocked one to make a trade (assuming trading is preferred on the board) go to second main phase, put a plus one counter on the other goblin.
If you have just one goblin tokens against a 4/4 you do have to pump and pump and make your opponent say "oh well ok I won't block then" but you haven't tied down the boulder rush at all, that's only the land getting tied down.

If your opponent has lots of removal you'll wish you had the faceless haven since it increases the number of questions your opponent has to answer. Manlands have always been a huge deal for that reason

I'm not sure if it's a matter of good or bad, lol?
We're just navel gazing about what might exist and what we think fair prices for cards are. I'm not sure anyone can be "good" at this, or if it matters. I think the card design is cool, at least, so I'm kind of approaching it from a "if I was designing this card, what would I want to do to balance it?"
I can be objectively wrong in predicting the WotC design team's future behavior, but you're right that it is way too silly a skill to be caring about.

I've been daydreaming about an anti-Rest in Peace card that dredge can run that is better than fragmentize (new dredge does mana for fragmentize better than nature's claim now imo)
The new curse of silence is such an answer to prayer. It's so perfect. Current modern dredge doesn't have enough turn one plays after the faithless looting ban. It's easy to get overwhelming advantage before land 4. And even when they pay four for rest in peace, you get to dredge 5 one last time!!!

I agree and I would draft it even in sets with no graveyard synergies. I think a set having graveyard synergies only moves it from "should never be wheeling" to "jawdropping".
I think a similar card perhaps with the flavor text "The stitcher died years ago, but her dutiful assistant still keeps the laboratory well stocked." would help out the struggling midnight hunt blue black zombies archetype a lot

Owning the whole legacy format 0.0
"Let us say that you are right and there are two worlds. How much, then, is this 'other world' worth to you? What do you have there that you do not have here? Money? Power? Something worth causing the prince so much pain for?'"
"Well, I..."

I think it's not good when borrowing is the best way to play a "collectible card game"

I like some of the other business models but mtg is a natural Monopoly

there's other decks that demonstrate it better than this one but it's pretty funny that jtms was ever banned from a format he's not good enough for.
The deck looks fun. Playing 1+1 Chalice seems like a stressful amount of access to that effect to play but is pretty easy to imagine being correct

I'd probably want to play 0+2

I'd probably play an incorrect number of copies to avoid stress

As a selfinterested dredge player I recommend you run 4+0 though.

Idk why an obvious joke post made you feel like dunking on me for trying to play magic on a budget

Time raveler has the card advantage/tempo of oblivion ring or vindicate albeit in bounce style, but randomly also Kitesail Freebooters all your opponent's countermagic too.

yeah i immediately saw the irony in Ythan saying that and also knew well enough that Ythan wasn't trying to be ironic and just was reading the oracle text for the card and hasn't played in a while.

my first experience playing multiplayer (not counting high school) involved people explaining to me that we were playing a 5 player mode where each person tries to kill 2 players who are like their bounty targets, and the first play to complete that task is the sole winner, and I cast a red sweeper that killed 1 of my creatures, none of my bounty player's creatures, and 5 creatures of a player who was on the verge of eliminating both of his bounty targets, and he was furious at me for playing the game wrong.
my second experience playing multiplayer I doom bladed some legendary creature that would obviously snowball, and that player had 1 white mana up, and casted silence and insisted it countered the doom blade, caring more about a consensus of two players who had played it that way before more than my dry encyclopedic explanation of the definition of casting a spell.
