Could "Guillotined" replace the previous wording be a more suitable replacement? I dont believe the word as a specific connotation with any particular groups (expect the french), and is a distinctive enough flavour to not worry about any confusion from roles.
You can use an appropriate term to replace 'eliminate' in games you moderate. We're going to use 'eliminate' as the basic term, but if you want to use an alternate flavor term that isn't lynching (or otherwise breaks site rules), that is okay. The term you chose may also be charged depending on the country one lives in, so keep that in mind.

The history of racism in law enforcement speaks for itself. The fact that we not only include this terminology in our game format (as one of the most prominent "power" roles, no less) is bad enough, but to add insult to injury, Cops are near-universally placed on the town (read: "Good") side? What kind of message does that send?
We will consider this. Thank you for the suggestion.

Even though we settled on eliminate, I would encourage people who run themed games to experiment with their flavor for this mechanic. Good opportunity to come up with fresh themed terms for games.

(you can certainly continue to take the L if you wish)
Yeah that's fine. We did make it E-X in the Newbie queue, but you do you.

I feel like an official sitewide stance on this would be better, if only because new people are either going to be confused about why there are two different terms for it, or they'll figure it out and then probably have an uninformed opinion on it.
That said, I also think L-X is better because it is standard and sounds nicer and is justifiable as L being short for eliminate. But of course if an official announcement suggested E-X I would use that for consistency's sake.
We are standardizing a lot of terms around 'eliminate' but we also recognize that shorthanded terms are probably going to be developed with the new site culture over time. For example until TemporalLich mentioned that another mafia site that made this same change shortens it to 'Lim'...that term never occurred to me until he mentioned it. It will probably take some time for site culture to settle around new shorthand terminology for 'eliminate'.
Lyncher and Unlyncher are semi-common roles in Great/Grand Idea games and bastard themes. What words should we replace them with?
We're discussing that. We'll probably make that decision in the Wiki thread with the Wiki team (I linked it in post #1). As we'll want to have it replaced on the wiki at some point.
Personally, a suggestion in this thread earlier of 'condemn' is getting my vote for 'Condemner'

As a mod sure I have to change the word lynch around to something else, but to me thats not a big deal. I only put it in the final votecount when someone died and when I describe someone dieing during the day, I give them a death scene or just say that they died.
As a player my only real main concern was 312 and if I can still use it and play the game, then all of my concerns go away, and I actually have no reason to hate this change.
So we won't be punishing players for this, but we'd hope over time that we would just see lynch replaced in our collective mafia vocabulary. That's why we're choosing this top down approach of replacing lynch with other terms (be that eliminate or some other flavor). Our intentions are not to punish people or to police people's thoughts. Our intention is to shift site culture to better reflect the community we want to be. So no, you will not be punished if you use the term lynch as a player.

So, we're going to use eliminate for now. But if there is an honest move to something like Exile...that would be okay! The point of this exercise is to change site culture, and if site culture switches to eliminate/exile/whatever over time (as long as it doesn't end up as another problematic term) then we as a site have the ability to be responsive to that change. There are some terms that we will probably be more responsive to than others. The guillotine suggestion sounds dumb, doesn't roll off the tongue, and I can't imagine wanting to use that as a mod or a player unless you have a specific themed game. We're probably not going to use a term like 'run out of town' because that's too many words. We like shorthand, and that's why we came up with terms like L-X, MyLo, etc. as shorthand in the first place.
But, if you want to be #teamexile for example...be the change you want to be.

Again, be the change you want to be, we have the ability to make changes in the future. We chose eliminate because it is neutral, and other sites who play mafia/werewolf have made this same change.

We have heard people who would prefer lynch remains. We are still making the change. If you have questions about what that change will look like, those are appropriate posts, please do so, I am watching the thread for those questions! Opining about not making the change or wanting the decision reversed, or some combination thereof, are not really appropriate at this point. We know a tiny number of people oppose this change. We have heard the feedback, we even anticipated hearing that kind of feedback, but we've made the decision anyway to remove lynch from our mafia vocabulary.

Can there still be exceptions if the theme kinda involves the term?
